Well, back in 2005 I bought an Inspirion 6000-D. A few days ago a cat spilled coke in it while I was out of the house. It was destroyed. Thankfully, I had the Dell accidental damage warranty (which I'd forgotten all about.) Here's the specs on what they're sending as a replacement.
Is this a decent machine?

Are they send this to you for free? If it is true, then anything is good. Whether it is a good enough machine depends on what you want to do with it. You can do web-browsing, watch and burn DVDs, read and edit documents just fine on this machine.
Actually, any machine that you get will be better than your 3-year-old Inspiron...
This the what your new machine will look like, in case you wonder.

as hotf said, it will do email, surf, etc. Don't plan on gaming, streaming video, processing video(movies), etc. The 1.83 GHz processor is pretty slow these days and 4 gb of ram just can't make up for that fact.
-
Well, yeah, they're sending it for free (thanks to the warranty protecting against accidents) so I agree- anything is good.
I was just kind of wondering what (beyond the standard things you would expect to be able to do with a notebook) this set up would be good for. -
Seems like your machine comes with a decent 320GB of hard disk space, a very respectable WUXGA screen, a 9-cell battery, and a remote control; I think you can use it as a media center, store all your movies (or p o r n) on it.
-
At last! Well, good, as long as it isn't some obvious hunk of crap then I'm happy with it.
-
Can I get the Service tag of your Inspirion 6000. I'm sure this computer is much better than what you had.
Dell looks at what your old computer had and then they will chose a computer to match it or give you something better
The M1530 is much better than what you had, just to let you know. You should take it -
Ah excellent. I'm totally planning on taking the deal as (as has been said) anything would pretty much be better than a 3 year old Inspiron.
I'm just curious if there's anything (aside maybe more RAM) I might upgrade to make it better.
Out of curiosity... why do you want to know the service tag number? -
So you got an XPS for an Inspiron replacement? Sweet. The speed might be a bit slow but then it might have a larger cache than the older Inspiron.
-
That's why I don't let my cats drink Coke.
Probably to see what you are replacing in order to compare the specs. -
I think you new laptop has 4GB of RAM, which is more than enough for everyday use. The only weak point on this computer is the CPU (and probably the GPU as well, if you want to play 3D games). I am not sure if you upgrade the CPU on this machine...
Another suggestion is to sell it on eBay, make a few hundred dollars and use it towards a new one. -
I would speak to Dell about getting a faster processor if they will not you could always replace it.
