Still worth buying a XPS M1530?

I am currently looking for a new laptop and the XPS M1530 really caught my eye. I'm not looking for a super high end gaming laptop, but something that I can use for photos / dvds and some more general gaming (source engine stuff).

I live in the UK and Dell have got some pretty good prices on the XPS M1530. My only concern is that the system is almost a year old now and, whilst it still wipes the floor with a lot of similarly priced systems, I'm worried there will be a major upgrade straight after I buy it.

That said, I have bought systems from dell before and everytime I seem to wait I lose the bargain and get something not quite as good.

I guess my only concerns are regarding the "noisy dvd" and some overheating issues. Obviously, all electronics are prone to failure and laptops are no different. Do you guys feel that the issues people have with the XPS are pretty much in line with industry standards, or are they more trouble-prone.

Deal ends on Jan 7th, so I am going to either buy this weekend or wait... that said, if a super duper new model comes out, it will have a higher price tag and, to be honest, I'm all about the value.

    Opinions would be appreciated.

For the price the 1530 is a great notebook. Normally I intend to keep my laptop(s) around for about 3~4 years of useful life. The latest firmware and BIOS updates have eliminated pretty much all of the issues you are worried about. Get as much computer as you can afford (CPU & display) in the 1530 and I think you'll be happy for a long while.

Right, 1530 is going to be remove from the XPS line. That's why it become cheaper and cheaper. And video card problem will be the time boom in the future.

Why you wait the new studio xps 1640 for just a few weeks. It can stay with you for few years...

I thought the 1640 was still a rumour?!

Either way, if it comes out it will be beyond my budget initially. If the XPS M1530 is coming down in price, perhaps it is a good time to buy.

Not sure what to think about the video card issue... although this effects pretty much all manufactures, not just dell.

    I hate buying stuff... grrr.

I have had zero problems with the video card. And proninja is correct, if there is a problem it would affect more notebooks than just the 1530.

After running an xps1530 through several tests, system impressive.

    Pros.
The NVIDIA 8600M GT 3dmark06 score was 4712 (non OC).
The T8300 encodes/rips a coml DVD in 15 minutes using AnyDVD.
    Both excellent scores.
The LED LCD is their best screen. Very bright. Colors rich and vivid.
Almost 3D image. In short, almost plasma-like compared to their other screens.
Above system now selling for $790 at outlet. Great price.

    Cons.
Speakers are size on your thumb. Could hardly hear DVD audio.
Very tinny sound. Sound impressive through high quality headphones.

The heat issue controversy bothered me too, after reading more and more reports from owners with failed systems, wishing they had purchased 3 yr CC. Buy the extended warranty and sleep at night. However, since 3 yr CC adds $350 addl cost, the $790 system now costs you $1140.

There are several new notebooks being introduced for a few dollars more, that have graphics rivaling the $3300 xps 1730. For ex, Best Buy has a Gateway notebook with NVIDIA 8800 SLI graphics, for $1250! I know, a Gateway. But google other buyers. They are very happy, with 3dmark 06 scores of 12000.

    Hope this helps.

Aaah..I say if you want the 1530..you should certainly *go for it*. :D

To me, there is nothing wrong with the 1530..and I can say that..for the fact I have had it for nearly a year! :D

I have no issues with my lappy. If I did, I don't worry ~ as I am covered under warranty and Dell would take care of any potential problems.

No noisy DVD, No overheating..zilch! :D

Also, we don't have a specified date as to when the new line is going to be released.

So either wait..and wait for the new line, or get a great deal on a fabulous notebook, now!!! :D

(I hope you take the latter in the paragraph above) ;)

    Cin ;) :),
