I'm having a problem with my SXPS16 waking from hibernation/sleep on different hours of the night while i'm sleeping.
I have checked that all the usual "This device can power on the computer" have been unchecked and yet it still awakens. In Event Viewer under System i can see this strange little thing:
The system has resumed from sleep.
Sleep Time: 01-05-2009 22:31:43
Wake Time: 02-05-2009 04:43:03
Wake Source: Power Button
Ok...now i'm sure that I didn't press the power button at 4 in the morning...has anybody experienced anything similar?

Call an exorcist...
Try this:

I have considered calling an exorcistBut i rather, perhaps, try an re-installation first

any luck treckster? i also have a studio xps16 that will not stay asleep or hibernate for more than a few minutes. only thing that gets logged in applog is Wake Source: Power Button or Wake Source: Unknown.
it's worked perfectly for about a month then this issue started. -
I'm thinking of installing W7 on it so i haven't given it much thought. I do think that it's software related but i just can't figure out what component is triggering the wake.

This appears to be a random issue, but sometimes when I use the media touch buttons, I will get an onscreen icon showing the levels of adjustment for whatever I am changing...volume, screen brightness, etc. Other times, the buttons will work and respond to input, but I will get no onscreen icon. Once they go, they don't seem to come back, so I don't know if I'm actually disabling the onscreen icons somehow, or if it's just a hiccup. System restore brings them back, but I still lose them again eventually. No issues thus far with sleep/wake. Has anybody installed the "Dell Software Utility" from dell support...it's listed as an URGENT update on the site...I can't tell from the description if it is supposed to update hardware drivers automatically, or just Operating system patches. I don't think it does windows updates, but honestly, I can't tell what it's doing or supposed to do.

this should help narrow down which application is waking your laptop
1) to figure out what day this all started...
--go to event viewer under system and filter by event source so only 'power-troubleshoot' events are listed. start from around the date you think the issue started and look for the first event or events where sleep time and wake time are within minutes of each other.
(with mine i could see the last time it slept normally was 5/5/2009 3pm and the first time it had problem was 5/6/2009 1am so i knew it was something between those times most likely on 5/5/2009. remember to look at the time the event posted and not the time in the description. I believe that is in GMT.
2) go to control panel<programs and features then sort by 'installed on' column. this is where i found pdf creator and vmware converter had been installed on 5/5. uninstall, reboot and test.
good luck! -
here's step 2 from the above post. i accidentally used a greater than sign and it removed everything after it...

sorry, that's about all i can think of at the moment. -
Thanks Trigger! I think you figured it out...
