Not sure if anyone can help.

Just replaced the chargerboard on a 1735 due to a damaged socket. Change went fine however on boot it alerted to an issue with the battery. A new battery has been replaced and there is still an issue with it not being charged and the ac adaptor not being recognised. However the laptop runs off the adaptor without a problem. The adaptor is a 90w adaptor.

I've plugged my XPS M1710 130w adaptor and it was firstly recognised in the BIOS and charged BOTH batteries, so therefore I assume there wasn't an issue with the original battery and more down to the ac adaptor.

What I don't really understand though is that the 90w adaptor is obviously ok in the fact it powers the laptop and runs happily, it just fails to charge the battery. Looking around I don't see many places that recommend the 130w so I'm assuming it's not recommended the the Studio 1735 and should stick to the 90w.

I suppose my question really is whether it could be the current 90w adaptor at fault and if so, should I replace with another 90w or go for a 130w which I know works fine.

    Many thanks

The 130 watt will be fine, the laptop will only draw the power it needs, the adapter's MAXIMUM output is 130 watt or another 90 will be fine. The 130 watt is too heavy IMO, you can pick up a PA-3E (slim 90 watt) for pretty cheap these days.

ok thanks. Was worried that replacing with another 90w might not resolve the issue and that there wasn't anything wrong with the current one because it is powering the device.

Have found another link that suggests the charge information is controlled by a small wire inside the adaptor connector and if that's the case, maybe its damaged so a new 90w will fix it.

Just like to be someway of sure before buying because another battery has already been purchased where it now seems it wasn't needed.

Ya if yours shipped with a 90 watt, you should be fine with another 90 watt. Yes sometimes the eeprom chip goes bad, and the Dell BIOS is quite picky and won't charge the battery. The old school Dells like M1710 won't even power on without a genuine Dell 130 or 150 watt adapter.

so you suggesting that the current 90w is faulty even though it's powering the system happily and another 90w should resolve it rather than getting a new 130w
