haha, it seems like they just pretend that they know what they're talking about but in the end have literally no idea. And BTW after this he said, its not going to work Eric. And I was like, I'll try and see.

That was hilarious. At least he fessed up and was honest about it. The laptop has just been released so I wouldn't of given the CS agent a hard-time either.

To be honest I'm not sure what you all are trying to accomplish other than feeling better about yourselves after a haughty conversation with some first level techs.

Obviously Dell isn't going to say they are interchangeable because that would be tantamount to Dell committing to support an unsupportable configuration. No tech gets to make decisions about what configurations and interchangeability of parts is supported by a multinational corporation. They could lose their jobs by going on record saying "yes it might work" and most of them know it so they're going to say "no" or "I don't know." They know this. You know this. So why even bother tying up their time while someone with a legitimate issue they COULD help with is sitting around on hold?

Once the service manuals are out, we'll have a better idea. Then some brave soul will attempt a swap, and soon enough we'll know if it can be done. In the meantime, please leave those poor people alone!

Funny thing is I am actually fluent in french.. I knew (after trying several other countries stated in a previous post) that they would try and get me to call in.. hence why I wrote compltely gramatically and inproperlly spelled french in there... as you can see it did not go far except that she cannot help me AFTER I mentioned I dont speak much french and im from the Ivory Coast and speak mainly Zulu XD... I had enough french in there so that it was easily understandable.. I think shes got little bit of hate issues towards people from the continent south of europe.

Dell UK was even more unfriendly:

Dont forget as I mentioned in an earlier post, you can press FN + Right Arrow Key to disable and enable illumination. Its how Studio does it as well. No need for any external switches.

    Really nice job Eric!

wow this topic is heating up!, i cant believe it has taken laptop genuis' sooo long to finally come up with something we can use in the dark! alienware has backlit keys so thats why i am guessing dell has followed suit, its got to be one of the easiest things to design clear keys and lights would be a start :D

really hoping this can be done, everyone at work always looks at my laptop and asks why the keys are silver (which is totally sad) black would be nice hence i saw that post about swapping them over and now this! backlit ftw!

has anyone got any pics of the S15 with backlit on (any screen covered :D)

The keyboards are identical.. I matched up all the references online. All the screw holes are spot on the same, the ribbon cable is in the same location too.

A college of mine in the office apparently got his Studio 15 on Friday and brought it in today, so I checked his service manuals and it was further confirmation.

I even coxed him into ripping his 3 day old laptop to see... We got the keyboard exposed on his machine too and everything was identical to my 1520 keyboard, minus the black color and LEDs obviously.

But he wasn't the least bit eager to try the keyboard out in my machine.. I think he was worried I would run off with it.. LOL - It's his new baby so it was understandable, but I'll bug him to death to try it though, he'll break in because he loves doing stuff like that.

Oh wow. What a good idea. I'm bummed that they didn't release the backlit keyboard on the M1530s. I think it would have made sense being as it is one of their more high-end laptops. Not fair. Let us know if it works.

I fail to see the logic if you're not for some reason sure the Studio's use the same MB as the XPS, although it's an easier implementation than having an Inspiron think it's having a ambience light sensor like a D630 by pressing Fn+Left Arrow..

It's not exactly dells fault for the racists guy.

90% of the Indian tech support army is all students making money to pay off there loans. I got friends in India that told me that. What do you expect when you got a bunch of almost say kids running the show? (there are older adults but majority seems to be students.)

i dont know how you can dis dell  they make a genuine product give you lots of options, insure you for damages; out of the 5x laptops ive owned all different brands dell have stood above the rest, and this is the best laptop ive owned and its not even the most expensive one ive bought. dell are good at getting back to you, have you ever tried ringing up an asus/toshiba rep? i am sure its much easier for you guys in the states to get in contact with a rep from the company; but when i rang dell i spoke to someone in 3 mins organised the delivery of my replacement network card straight away.

can we get back to the topic and quit talking about racism... ;)

Well, finally harping about the illuminated keyboards on Ideastorm has had some results and not only for high end gamer :)

Unfortunately, I don't think Dell wants compatibility with other laptops like xps or vostro/inspiron (or doesn't want to go through the trouble).

Firstly, there is a note in the manual for 1535 (studio 15) saying:

"NOTE: If you have the backlit keyboard (optional), there would be an additional cable that needs to be disconnected."

    ref: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/1535/en/SM/keyboard.htm

So, even while not considering the difference in the size or construction or even in the cable/connector, this additional cable connector will mostly be specific to the studio series.

Secondly, as someone mentioned before about the Fn+right key combo and the quickset software to toggle the keyboard backlight , i believe this needs BIOS support to be accomplished, which means Dell may have to release such a bios for xps and vostro/inspiron lines.

Surely we know how probable that is

    Hi guys,
I have been searching on Google for information about swapping keyboards, Studio15 to M1530, and I came across this thread. My friend had just got a studio15 and I mentioned this to him and he swapped out the keyboards to test it out. Guess what? It works!
I took a pic while the computer is off but the keys and illumination works by using FN+Right Arrow key.
The pic is kind of blurry, I took it with my phone's camera.

No way. That is awesome. I would like to see some pictures of it lighten up, as well as some close-ups to see how seamless it looks. but that's awesome. if we get further confirmation that this works, then I'll definitely do it with mine although I'm not so sure of how I feel about the black instead of the silver. but it looks cool.

If the m1530 and m1330 use the same keyboard then I don't see why it wouldn't work in the m1330.

Also, anyone else try this, its great that it works on the m1530. Too bad he already gave back the keyboard.

Ehh. I still have a hard time believing the keyboard is actually lighting up without seeing a picture of it. It has to be getting power from somewhere. Didn't think they keyboard connection would actually carry that much power.

I don't doubt that he did it (put the keyboard in). But the fact that you didn't take the picture when you had the computer on (knowing that it'd be very respected and appreciated) is what makes me skeptical.

Granted you have a point, and we all would have liked to have seen the keyboard with the backlight on (as well as from some different angles, and maybe even a couple of it being installed) there's no reason to throw around halves of mean words.
