I'm about to pull the trigger on either the 13 or the 16. It's really come down to how well the above to games run for you (those are the two that have me hooked at the moment, so i'll be familiar with how I'm used to it performing compared to your settings).

I'm currently on an Asus G2S-A1 thats overheating like crazy. Time to upgrade. It's specs: 2.2Ghz core 2, 4gb ram, 5400rpm hdd, 8600m-gt 256.

Will the XPS13 with a 2.66ghz, 4gb ram, 7200rpm hdd, and the N10-M 512mb gpu perform equal or better then what I'm currently on? I ask because I'm having trouble finding a comparable benchmark.

This wont be my primary gaming rig, it will be portable entertainment. BUT it does need to be able to run on par with what i have or better to entertain me :) Should I be happy with the 13 or do you think the 16 would be better. The only reason I'd go with teh 16 is for the Radeon 4670 1gb if the 13 has problems with wow and L4D.

If you play WoW or L4D on the 13 (or even the 16) I would GREATLY appreciate the peace of mind i would get from hearing back what your FPS are and what detail/quality settings you're getting them at.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you in advance!!

Comparing the 8600m-gt and the 210m from http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-8600M-GT.3986.0.html:

    8600m-gt: 32 shaders, core 475(MHz), shader 950, memory 700, 128bit, 20watts
    210m: 16 shaders, core 625, shader 1500, memory 800, 64bit, 14watts

They say that the 8600 scores about 3350 on 3dMark06, and they say that the 210 will score around 3900, but looking at the specs I find it hard to believe. Then again, I don't know a whole lot about GPUs, so maybe someone who keeps up with it can say whether that's realistic or not.

L4D runs quite nicely on the xps 1340 with a 9500 on high res on med with anti las turned off so I would expect it to run on high with the 512mb graphics card. I would go with the 13 just for portability issues and battery life if I were you.

wow is far more demanding than crysis after patches of graphics upgrade. with my old studio 16 512 ati 3670, i can only play at "good" video settings(3rd highest out of 5) and full hd 1920x1080, with all sound settings turn off. and thats the amin reason i bought another dell studio 16 with ati 4670. some players reported on forum, even nvidia gtx260 aint capable run at highest setting(ultra).

its hard to fight emalon as a melee when your fps is 5-10 and latency is 300.
dalaran lags quite often around 7-10pm EST.

nomoredell, i almost wonder if you're suffering from a cache issue. On my asus with the 8600gt 256 I run 1920x1200 on my external 24" and only occasionally will have a stutter in WoW (obviously in dalaran or 25m raids occasionally)

I would expect you to get better results. Do you have shadows on? They are very poorly coded and usually cut your fps by ~50%

On wow I run everything max beside shadows and I get a avg of 40-60 fps. Haven't played L4D on this laptop yet, because I'm waiting to get L4D2 when it comes out in November.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 16" as well. Though I don't game, if the possibility to run Fallout 3 at a decent play quality is there, I'd be pretty psyched. Anyone give that one a go on the 16" at all?

^^L4D runs great on the xps 1340 much better than that youtube video states. You have to keep in mind the resolution is smaller on the 1340 which allows it to run games at about the same rate as the 1640 comparable to the res.

Did you get the XPS 13 with the 210M video card? You should do some benchmarks, since none seem to exist!

Yeah fallout3 runs fine on the XPS 1640. I chose optimal settings and it runs smooth. Maxing out though is a little choppy, but it still runs it beautifully on optimal settings.
