Hi guys, I got a Studio XPS 1340 last weekend and the first thing I did was install XP on it. I got all the drivers for XP off one of the the dell forum boards, and this is where my problem begins.

If I use all Dell drivers, I can install all the hardware, but I'll get a message about the 9200M GS not starting up.

However, if I try to use the drivers direct from Nvidia, it'll say I don't have any compatible hardware with that driver, and then automatically aborts the install.

I seem to have the correct drivers for everything, except for this one thing.

AFAIK Geforce boost only works in windows Vista. So it's most likely an incompatibility due to windows XP.

Except Win 7 was a pain in the to work with in beta (at least when I tried it on my desktop).

However once it comes out it's going to stomp all over Vista.

    I got them off Dell800

    http://www.dell800.com/thread-7571-1-1.html

It's in Chinese, so here's the translation for the table

    System Utilities
    Motherboard
    Graphics Card
    Card Reader
    Network Card
    - Wired
    - Wireless
    Sound Card
    Bluetooth
    Touchpad
    Webcam
    Quickset

Just click on the links in the XP column, most of them are actually hosted on the Dell FTP.

I cannot understand chinese language (yet) :-(

Not being able to sign-in, I cannot even download the drivers.

Would you be so kind to upload the drivers in some other web-site?

Thank you very much for your help

Is there a reason you need to run XP? Vista would be much better on the 1340. Hybrid SLi isn't supported in XP so you won't be able to use both graphics cards.

Just use Vista. Do you even have a legitimate reason for using XP other than "People say Vista is bad!"? Vista runs perfectly on any dual core computer with 2GB+ RAM. It runs well on weaker things, too.

There's a lot of reason why People like XP, why people like Vista.

I've used both XP Professional and Vista Ultimate x64 on the 1340, and personally, if not for the Vista power management, I'll still be using XP.

That's probably true, but in my experience not many people can justify why they don't want to use Vista. That is, many people will tell you that they hate Vista, but few will be able to tell you why.

Personally, I don't see the appeal of XP. It's an 8 year old OS that takes a lot of trouble to get working on these laptops. And Hybrid-SLI doesn't work, nor do you have the advanced power management that you do on Vista. And if you can't find drivers for all the devices on the laptop, you're out of luck. Compound that with the fact that XP isn't officially supported means you have a maintenance nightmare on your hands. The only advantage you have is that XP might run a little faster - which is practically irrelevant with such fast hardware.

On many levels XP is a lot more customizable compared to Vista.

The problem with Vista was a terrible start. I tried Vista on release, and the experience was that horrible, I didn't try Vista again till April, when I got my 1340. However, with one simple bad experience, a lot of people will disregard Vista as a viable OS no matter what SP1 or 2 will bring.

As for the appeal of XP, it's simple. One can argue Vista isn't all that hard to use, but personally, I find XP even easier to use. As for support, if a user can go as far as installing XP on a Vista shipped machine, they will be tech savvy enough to handle their own maintenance issues. I installed XP on my 1340, and other than the SLI not being supported, I had no issues whatsoever.

Bottom line, it comes down to personal choices. As a rule of thumb I never forced people to use whatever OS I deem best (Hence my parents were still using Win2K when we hit XP SP2). If the end user is comfortable with it, that's all that really matters. If what they do is simple (like reading emails, a bit of news) then there really is no reason to force them to learn something new. Hell, when my mom was using my laptop when she was here for holiday, she couldn't find the start menu button because it's a circle with the windows icon, instead of the word Start.
