    I was happily tapping away on my month-old 1340 (P8600, 4gb, 9500m, 320gb) today, when all of a sudden...

The screen went bright white. Then flickered a bit. Then... smoke started coming out of the left hinge area!! It soon switched off.

Dell will be getting a phone call tomorrow!

"Left hinge area" is where the fan/heatsink are, and the graphics and CPU are close by. Possibly the fan failed?

I think its more likely that it was the actual connections in the hinge shorting... since it seemed to come directly out of the hinge rather than from the vent or the speaker.

May we have some visual proof? Not, not that I don't believe you :p but it would be interesting to see what the laptop looks like now

Theres nothing visible on the outside, and I don't dare switch it on again to make some more smoke! Would rather not make it worse!
