    Studio XPS 16 CPU Upgrade?

    Hey there,

    I'm new to the forums, glad to be part of this community.

    I have a question to ask you all, hope you'll are able to answer if possible.

    I have the Dell Studio XPS 1640 Laptop, with:

    Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 Ghz
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 1GB
    500GB SATA Hard Drive [5400 rpm]

    and other features I assume the board is already familiar with.

    I wanted to know whether or not the CPU on this laptop could be upgraded or anyway changed with another?

    And if so, what CPU options do I have to change it to? I called a Dell Tech support fellow a little while ago, and he mentioned the Intel i5 core a number of times, but spoke of the motherboard as being a restriction (socket size and so on). So, yes, what processors can I upgrade to if possible?

    I have the exact same machine, and I had the same question.

    Does anybody know? I don't know much about upgrading laptop CPUs.

    PS Saracen - It's a socket P, I think. So it won't support quad core chips, but I know there was a 2.73 GHz dual core CPU that would also fit.

    P9700 would be you best option, although the T9800 will also work, it just has a higher TDP.

    Any T/P/X series C2D will work in the laptop I have a t9900 as TDP are at max 45W so not to bad

    You can even get a C2Q q9000/9100 but thats a gamble I have read a thread where it worked on the 1737 as it wasn't limited in the bios IDK if they limited the SXPS 16 bios or not also a qx9300 wouldn't work.

    http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35515 Intel site shows support for quad cores as well (Just remember that it may just be BIOS limited as the chipset supports it.)

    EDIT: here are temps for a 3.06ghz T9900 second fastest C2D made only after the X9100 which has the same clock speed and everything just unlocked mulitipliers and some other performance improvements.
