It's shipping with 3-5 days shipping actually, theres a promotion going on that you have no interest for 12 months on XPS (includes Studio XPS) and free 3-5 day shipping, and it's ship date is this friday... also i was strongly thinking about getting the 1530 but i decided to change to this... i'm guessing you have the 1530, how is it?

Yeps, that 12 months interest free promo is good. I did it on my 1530 (yeps have one) :D The only thing with the 12 months promo..Is, that you have to be sure to pay it off before the 12 months is up.

If you don't they will slap you with that horrible interest that accrued on the day, the 12 month period is up. I paid mine off w/in 4 months and I was happy to avoid it.

The 1530 is a very nice lappy, I have no qualms ~ it has held up very well for me in the last year I've had it. Right now, the only thing I need to do is some *tweaking*, I need more space, so some cleaning is upcoming! :D

And, this morning...I was using my lappy and I moved the wrong way....off it flew from my lap onto the floor. I was terrified to pick it up and see it not working...but all was good with it. No prob's...It's one sleek, and sexy and..and tough lappy!

Just like the 1640 is! :D

yeah, that's one of the reasons i decided well Dell Studio XPS is becuase of the financing (i'm in school, i can't really pay $1,199 straight out) and the 12 month no interest. the only thing i wish the Studio XPS had was the customization like the Studio 17, i really liked the colors/desings you can have on them. But it should be good, it's the insides that matter anyways :D and my pc right now, 3.3ghz so it's fast that way but only 512mb ram and an old integraded gpu with no pixel shader! I do cg art and it's really hard on this thing!

I think the 1640 will work well for you, for your needs and such! :D

Customization would be very nice! :D I think with each model, Dell puts out they learn! Perhaps, in the future the 1640 will have more customization choices.

I think, more color choices will follow, sooner than the latter! :D
It seems they always start new model releases with either Black or White, and expand later on!

Times are tough right now, and agreed..the financing does help. If it's used for the purpose of saving upfront, and paid off in a timely manner! :D

Yes i agree! Dell always adds more, like when this first came out it only had 1 screen option and no blue-ray... now it was both!

are there any cons to purchasing the 1640 through best buy?

Anyone know what the warranty coverage is if you do not buy a BB extended plan?

i dont think that there are any cons to buying it from bestbuy. It comes with a lot of great stuff in it. I ordered mine from bestbuy last thursday and it should be here by friday.

It comes with a one year manufacturers warranty and when finalizing your purchase you gt this thing that says, $99 geek-squad warranty.

My total came out to $1220 which is an amazing price for the geek-squad warranty and parts labor and next day air shipping.

I will post up pictures of the unboxing and a video.

    Thanks.

So if I buy from bestbuy and lets say i have a hardware issue within the first month or two. Would I call Dell first or Best Buy first?

Right now it's being built, is there a way to see in-depth of what's happening to it ex: testing, etc? Well the est. ship day is saturday, and it's supposed to arrive wednesday-friday, i'm having surgery on wedneday so i hope it comes then (outpatient surgery) so i'll have something to do when i get home!

2 ways: www.dell.com, and log into your account.

Or, simply call 1-800-433-9014, and enter your order number when Ms. Automated Dial asks you to.

The Automated Dial is *usually* more current than online. Online updates usually overnight.

Or, you can call a Dell Rep and ask what stage your lappy is currently in! :D

Most times, (most) they will ship before the ESD...Dell over-extends on the ESD to cover problems with a part on backorder, etc :D

Wow that's good news (the early shipping) i've never bought from dell before, we do have 3 macs though, they come like in 3 days after you order them :p but i wanted to try dell after hearing alot of good things bout them. And i can't wait to use my CG programs in it! My pc right now goes so incredibly slow when trying to keyframe an animation it is painful, and rendering 225 frames takes about 12 hours!!!

Yes, it is good news, if it ships before the ESD. The only downside is that, if there are problems with the build of your lappy (part delay, prob's w/a manufacturer, production line probs) ~ they will extend out your ESD, if it doesn't appear it will ship on or before it.

This happened with my Mini 9, and my 1530 last year. Most of the time, Dell is communicative with you as to what is going on. Alot of times not :(

I like my Dell's...I just don't care for lack of followup with the customer on things! ;)

Let's hope your surely ships on, or before your ESD :D

Yeah, i've heard of some ppls get delayed for months, at least it's not as bad as hp, i was looking to buy one of theirs and it turns over a month of some laptops to be build and delivered! Thats whithout delays! And i really hope mine doesnt, i didn't customize anything on it so i'm hoping that it'll be built fast cause of that.

I hope that you have all *pros* vs. *cons* ;)

Aah yes, it's happened to lots of peep's (including me)...I just stayed on *top* of Dell, and my Rep.. :D

I've never owned a HP, had a friend who had one. And had numerous prob's with his order!

With hearing all of his probs, that was one of the reasons I decided to go with Dell when looking!
    Alas, that was then..this is now..and it's all Dell~

    Cin ;) :)
