I am looking to purchase a Studio XPS 16, but I can't decided if I should get the 500GB HDD or the 128GB SSD (the difference in capactiy is not an issue). However, I have never owned a laptop with an SSD, and some of my concerns include the manufacturer of the SSD and if the SSD supports TRIM. I would love to hear people's opinion on the pros/cons and why I should get one or the other, especially in regards to DELL.

    Thank you

SSD and if you want extra capacity get the optical bay hard drive caddy and replace your DVD drive with a hard drive.

    SSDs rule.

All the latest 128GB SSDs Dell has been sending support TRIM. I highly recommend it. For media storage I use an eSATA connected 320GB 7200rpm Western Digital Black.

Agreed, go with the SSD for sure. You will never look back, they are amazingly fast! I put an Intel G2 80Gb in myself and couldn't believe the difference it makes.

get ssd for sure if you want less heating issue. also it should reduce noise, but we all know that ssds right now dont worth the price. also the samsung one i heard aint doing much performance anyways

Definately SSD...the difference in performance is amazing.

I updated the firmware on my 1640 SSD to support TRIM from here. They may have changed in the later XPS 16 models though...
