    Hello All,

Have any of you managed to successfully install the "creative soundblaster" software? It is from the executable "CREATIVE-LABS_SOUND-BLASTER-_A00_R213242". The installer starts but quits right away.
Administrator, running as 'in different' OS environments, and safe-mode do not work. It acts the same under both 32 and 64 bit.

Any solutions? I am out of ideas.

Just received my Studio XPS 16 and its great - Only problem is that its running Vista and I would like to try and install Windows 7 on it in the next week or so. I wondered:

    1) Are you guys installing drivers from DELL web site or are you going direct to the 3rd party sites and using the drivers from their sites ?

    2) Does anyone here have a complete list of what they have installed with links, version numbers etc and 100% of their laptop works ok ?

    3) Which OS are you also using - 32 bit or 64 bit ? Does this limit anything if I use one or the other ?

    EDIT: - I also wondered:

    4) When your 1st installing Windows 7 is it worth deleteing the dell recovery parition to give us a bit more disk space ? - I have all the cds etc if I need to reinstall vista.

From the links above it looks like :

    1) Link still valid and looks ok

    3) I assume the chipset in the 1640 is the intel "PM45" if so then this has been updated, see this link here:
    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-029319.htm
so the latest driver is then:

    Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18052&lang=eng
    version: Ver:9.1.1.1019 Date:9/7/2009

    3) Link ok and still on version 8.9.0.1023 so ok

    4) I assume we are looking at "Windows 7 32Bit - Mobility Radeon - HD 3000 Series" if so then this looks like its been updated to version 9.9 (9/9/2009):
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-32.aspx

i don't think so it's necessary at all, win 7 basically detects all your hardware and installs all drivers automatically. everything worked fine for me with the default drivers win installed, only the eject button didn't work but after installing quickset, it solved that too. i also suggest to install manually catalyst 9.9, but that's all..

Yep either those or the v9.1.1.1020 on station drivers.

Comes back with an error "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software" and the log says "ERROR 0x7FB: No INFs found that match the active devices on the system".

It's for the infrared receiver. I had it working with no problems, don't really know what to tell you. Unfortunately not everything has drivers for Win 7 yet even though the kernel is virtually the same from Vista.

If you are in the US - My Dell Downloads: https://smartsource.dell.com/

If you are outside the US you will have to contact Dell Support and ask for the DVD to be sent out to you.

    That is not true.
That link allows for the selection of multiple countries. I selected Canada.

In any event, it is irrelevant: out of curiosity I also selected US to see if there are more download options, etc., and it allowed for the change and the downloads. (There were no more/less downloads anyway.)

Yeah it's pain to get it working. I had to use IE8 in IE7 developer mode.

    US / Canada - same place isn't it ;)

Doesn't work in the UK though and as I understood it it was US / Canada only.

After setting up via IE, use firefox to download. That did the trick for me.

No. It is not. There is no one here that publicly questions the birthplace authenticity of Stephen Harper (PM).

I've been trying to get that stupid site to work for weeks now and I can't seem to get in. In firefox, it just hangs after you click the 'register now' button, and in IE it acts like it's installing etc., but then it just sits there too.

I haven't tried running IE8 in IE7 developer mode though, how would one do this? lol

Register your machine in IE8 compatibility mode. Go to the url and simply click on the middle-of-the-page-teared-paper icon at the right of address bar. Once registered, and downloads showing, use firefox to login and download.

now u got further then got "Service Tag is not supported. " message. then i checked my warranty status, and it's totally screwed up. it says:
"Service Tag: ....... Change Service Tag
    System Type: Other_486 V486/__S Rev. 2 FS
    Ship Date: 8/9/2009
    Dell IBU: Not Available"
i checked it a couple of weeks ago and it was ok then (showed the correct model and warranty). since that i called my local dell to transfer the warranty so it will be valid here, maybe this caused the problem somehow..

I have a Studio XPS 1640. In the Dell-installed Vista, I have a device called ATI Function Driver for High Definition Audio - ATI AA01. It's listed under Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager.

I've installed Windows 7 and all possible drivers. Also both Dell ATI drivers and I also tried Windows 7 beta ATI drivers on ATI's site. My video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670. The problem is that I don't have that ATI Function Dirver for High Definition Audio in my Windows 7 install.

This means that I can only get 2 channel audio over HDMI in Windows 7 and in Vista I can get 5.1. I'm usually pretty good at googling this kind of stuff but can't find anything on the Internet.

    Thanks for your help

Download the desktop drivers and use Mobility Modder and the HDMI driver should be included.

So HDMI Audio driver shall be included only in desktop version of ATI Catalyst 9.9 Package, not in a mobliity version than?

Perhaps you are right because when I had Catalyst 9.7 desktop modded, I also had HDMI Audio, and now, when I have Catalyst 9.9 mobility, it's no more there.

Bright idea not to include this in a mobility version...

Perheaps it could be downloaded separately, and than installed together with a Catalyst 9.9 mobility driver, not to have to change the whole driver - any help?

Also I noticed that even having Catalyst 9.9 mobility driver installed, the version info I got with GPU-Z 0.3.5 is "Catalyst 9.7", probably due to atiumdag.dll file which stays in version 8.14.10.0697. Hovewer I saw some guys with displayed version "Catalyst 9.9" even than the atiumdag.dll file is also in version 8.14.10.0697. Anyone having the idea why is the version misread with GPU-Z?

Thanks. The modded drivers were able to find the device, but it says that it only supports two channels, while the Vista install says 5.1. I'm not sure if I care though because when I play 5.1 Dolby Digital over HDMI my receiver new recognizes it has Dolby Digital as opposed to the stereo I was getting before. In Boxee I have to downmix audio to 2 channels, but for some reason my receiver still outputs 5.1.

Hmm - I have a Studio XPS 1640 with an "ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3670-512MB" card. When I goto try and get the drivers (64bit) for AIT cards using the link:

    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

I get the choice of :

    (a) Radeon - Radeon HD 3600 Series (version 9.10 dated 10/22/2009 )

    or

    (b) Mobility Radeon - Mobility Radeon HD 3000 Series (version 9.9 dated 9/9/2009)

is (a) the desktop one you are talking about ??

and then when looking on dell site I get this choice:

    (c) AIT Driver (version 8.631.0.0000, A09 - dated 10/12/2009)
    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R227577&SystemID=StudioXPS16&servicetag=G4W8RJ1&os=W764&osl=en&deviceid=16674&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=6&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=326436

    Which one is best? - a,b or c ?
