I placed an order on 6/4 for an Xps 16 with i7-720, 500 GB HD, 8 GB RAM, blu-Ray, 1080p screen, wimax, etc. I am considering changing the order to an Alienware M15X. I am not a big pc gamer (Modern Warfare 2, Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 2, Assassins Creed) as I mostly play on the 360. I would do processing, watch movies, put together presentations (with and without video), etc. My biggest concerns with the xps are heating issues and the obvious design flaw of the screen covering the vent. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions. The size of either system is not a big issue.

My idea is Dell XPS 16 because it cheaper than Alienware15x. You can see I built same system.
I don't like Alienware15x because, it is heavy. I only like it when light on it changes color.

If you're not a heavy gamer, I would go with Studio XPS 16 any day since the new ATI 5730 will be able to handle most new games, and it is way ligther than M15X.
For the Alienware, you will basically be paying for stuff that you won't use. Also, I don't think the XPS 16 heat issue will factor in for you unless you're playing resource-demanding games for an extended time, which you don't plan to.

Yea, basicly it all comes to this question: do you think it's worth to pay 500 dollars more for the same config to avoid 'possible' heat issues?

Does anyone know if the ATI 5730 has improved any of the gaming heating issues? And are the heating issues only present with gaming?

Would it make a difference if I could get a similarly configured M15x for about $200 more.

I love alienwares, but since you dont need the graphics in the m15x you can save money and get the same processing power and almost as good graphics. My vote is XPS16, but the alienware build quality, cooling system and feel are tough to compete with.

While a laptop cooler is an outstanding suggestion, I would like to hope that we wouldn't need to buy something extra after spending close to $2000. Would you want to buy a cooler for a Mercedes because the company chose to block the tailpipe?
