My kids use this laptop mostly and have put it through it's paces. So I now need to replace the screen/top cover.

My question is, the laptop came with a screen that is 1366x768 native resolution (the cheapest option available I'm sure) and I've found a replacement screen that I think was the best you could get on the notebook at the time (1920x1080 reso)

Here's the link: New Dell Studio XPS 16 1645 1647 15 6" HD LCD Screen Black Complete Assembly | eBay

My question is, can I install this and it work fine or should I look for the original screen specs? Also, since the video card is only an HD 3670, would it be worse to use that 1080p screen.

The laptop will mostly be used for MS Office, web, and maybe some light gaming (LoL or Facebook games).

The screen that you linked should work fine, and the HD3670 will drive the display fine. Obviously GPU-intensive gaming will be worse at 1080p than at 720p, but I assume you can play at a non-native res.

Thank you very much. Going to order that.

I'm investigating adding a mSATA SSD to the notebook as well. Do you happen to know if I could add one (there is a slot available) and use it as a boot drive?

Pretty sure there is no mSATA slot in an 1645/47. You could always replace your primary drive (or optical drive) with a 2.5" SSD, though.

Here's a picture of the inside. Although it says WWAN, it looks like an mSATA port...

I'd like to keep the HDD and ODD in there while adding a mSATA SSD. Is it still not possible?

The model I have is a XPS 1640, btw.

That WWAN slot might have the same physical connector as mSATA, but I'm pretty sure it's not electrically compatible. You can always try it though.

Might be the only option. Was trying to forgo paying the money before confirming it was possible.
