I'm thinking about purchasing a Studio XPS 16, but I hear all these stories about the heat. I'll use my notebook on my lap 98% of the time. What is the truth? I don't want to burn my lap.

Its not gonna burn your lap. There is no heat issue its just some people block vents or get a dud. The laptop is actually very cool. The bottom of the laptop is metal so it creates the illusion that its really hot but its really not. I use it when i have just my boxers on and ive been burn free since i got it in febuary

the truth is, there is no truth.

For every person that would tell you that this laptop does not have heating problems, you'll find another that tells you that the laptop has heating problems. Im part of the latter group, although i found a way to work around it.

It has become such a huge issue that even a thread was locked because people were getting out of hand. And it seems already that theres way too many "heat" threads that in the end will amount to nothing because there is no consensus.

so, my advice? if you really like it, buy it and try it out. You have a period where you can return it, and all you have to do to avoid paying the restocking fee is telling them (if that were the case) that you can't tolerate the high temperatures. really. thats the best advice i think you could get. just try it out. every other comment will say either "it gets very hot" or "it does not get hot at all" .

    good luck.

I think you have 21 days after invoice to return, worked the hell out of it and if you don't like it ditch it.

I think Tiduspr gives you the best advice, there is no answer to the heating issue because its all relative and subjective.

Try it out and see if you can make it work. I'm still on the fence with mine, and I think about sending it back, I take one look at it and start drooling. It's too beautiful to leave my side.

That is probably the best advice ever given on these forums. They are real nice to look at, but I 'm also considering a refurbished 17" MacBook Pro.

My friend has one and its pretty cool. OSX is very user friendly and quick. The single button multi-touch pad is very nice. I'm going to try out a Studio XPS 16 before I make my decision.
