After a completely useless representative walked me in circles, then called me back once we got disconnected and left a 3 second message full of background noise I decided to go ahead and try out another representative. This one was more useful, I told him about how the computer was underclocking when I was playing games and was running hot in general, and he suggested that we replace the motherboard, heatsink, and fan assemblies. I had read about a power adapter possible being the issue but that wasn't offered so hopefully this first major surgery allows me to play games again. For those of you with the same computer, or are experiencing something similar, I would recommend you get it taken care of.

you may want to look at the "16xx throttling" threads. A new motherboard will not help your situation.

It does get you one service call closer to a system exchange, though! :D

Seriously, call Dell up and ask for the 130watt power adapter. I hear that and the A07 BIOS update are the two main helpers with throttling. =P

I was ok with not receiving a power adapter because the computer IS getting incredibly hot, the CPU hits 185-190F while under load which is far above what is normal. If this doesn't work and a power adapter for whatever reason could cause high temperatures, I'll call Dell up and have them send me a 130W power adapter.

The A07 BIOS that you're referring to is intended for use with the SXPS 1645.

It is not compatible with the 1640. Eliminating or minimizing CPU throttling on the 1640 will require a new BIOS being released for that system.
