This bios update is likely to fix the severe throttling issues many of these laptops have. Especially models equipped with a T9600 and ATI 4670.

Head over to the XPS 1640 thread and learn all about it and how to test for it, etc., etc.

If your power adapter is only rated at 90 watts DC output then it will likely not be able to run both the CPU and GPU at full speed at the same time. Maybe this latest bios fixes all of the issues but you will probably need to have them send you a 130 watt adapter to go along with this bios.

My pc just bricked when it was programming block 7 of 32. Now when i turn on , 3 leds of audio control are flashing, but the screen is black, and after 1 or 2 minutes it turns of. What can i do?

Edit: OMG, omg i just brought my xps back to life, thank you all who had similar problems with their xps and wrote how they fixed it. I will never EVAR flash my bios again, until DELL releases some super duper cool bios upgrade...uchhh.

I was using my 90watt today at work when testing this and had no issues. I do however have a less power hungry cpu...

I know what this claims to fix, but what exactly does this update do and what effect will this have in terms of possible extra heat? The description sounds like gobbledygook to me.

Does this mark the end of the trade up/replacement schemes?

I would say no, even though I am not a 1640 owner (I have the 1645), I think Bill stated that it will DEFINITELY still throttle....

So I believe those who are dissatisfied will still be able to... Though I could be wrong.

I haven't been able to go to Version A014 myself. Had to go back to A011. Now can't go to A012...

Same issue .. Writing Block 18 of 32.. The whole process hangs at this point.

I'm planning on updating my BIOS from A08 to A14. It shouldn't matter that I'm going from a really old bios to a new one right? Is there a better chance of success if I have a fresh copy of Windows installed so there's no clutter that could interfere with the installation of bios? Is there's a mechanistic reason why bioses get bricked? Thanks!

No need to format your computer for a BIOS update. The Dell BIOS update applications are normally very relaible.

And there won't be a problem going from 08 to 14 either.

Well my experience was that it bricked, twice, resurrected it using wincris, Dell wanted it back, so I popped in a spare drive, put on a fresh install of Windows, tried the update again and it worked!
So there may be an issue with some software on your system, just be prepared for it to fail, then you won't be disappointed if it does.

ya, I've heard somewhere on the forums that someone suggested turning some programs off before flashing the BIOS. I figure if I just go ahead and flash on a fresh install of Windows, I'll lower the risk of bricking?

Hi, I do have a studioxps with ATI HD 4670, and the graphics card seems to be performing below expectations. Can you please provide more info about overclocking safely to boost gaming performance?
