Hey guys, the original Dell charger cord for my Studio XPS 1640 got yanked by the dogs one too many times and finally stopped working. I've since ordered two different 3rd party chargers (couldn't find reasonably priced Dell) which say they are chargers, but when I plug them in, they only provide power and will not charge the cell. They look similar, but not identical, to the Dell charger and the have the same power specs. The power icon in the bottom right of the system tray says "Plugged in, not charging". I've tried everything I can think of to get them to charge, with no luck. Both of my batteries are completely depleted, so I cannot unplug the laptop without instant shutoff. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Were the batteries able to be charged with the original Dell charger? When was the last time that they were able to be charged?

I've learned long ago not to go with third party on much of anything electronic related. Usually the products don't work as expected or the life of the item is very short compared to the OEM item.

If I mess around for a long time with the original Dell charger, I can very occasionally get it to charge. Both of my batteries have been at zero power for about a week. I tried for about a half hour to get the Dell to work a few days ago, but quit when I got to the point of wanting to throw the whole thing out the window.

Thanks, I may have to go this route. Just pisses me off that I've already spent about that much ($30) on two 3rd party chargers. So I'll be in $60 if I get this one.

Any other thoughts? It's so frustrating to see it's getting plenty of power, but the damn things won't charge!

I can't quote for some reason...

Get the correct charger to begin with.

Yes I've made similiar mistakes..I've recently spent the same amount of money if not more just to upgrade to 580's and 2920xm

I think you need a minimum of a 90W charger for it to work properly with a 1640, probably 120W or higher. Also sometimes Dell's reject 3rd party adapters, and TBH I would avoid any 3rd party chargers.

The middle pin is used for adapter identification. The notebook knows if you attach a 65w, 90 or 120w part. If the adapter identification is not present, i assume it assumes a 65w adapter. Which won't charge the studio XPS 16.

I'm in the same boat. My undervolted studio 1555 draws about 50-55w @ max brightness, prime95, rthdbl, but it refuses to charge the battery with anything less than a 90w adaper, a dell 65w part does not work.
