I searched around on the website, and noticed "some" people were successful with upgrading their CPU.
My XPS 1645 has the Q720 and I was thinking to purchase the 920XM. In reality, I would be picking up a little less than 300Mhz increase in speed.
1) Is their any documentation from Dell supporting this CPU with this laptop?
2) Any compatibility concerns?
3) Upgrade worth the cost of the CPU?
4) Heat issues?
The reason for the request is that the sellers on Ebay, will not allow you to return the CPU once purchased. I am not fully convinced that this CPU is compatible with the Dell XPS 1645, and did not want to get stuck with a $140 CPU that will not work in my laptop.
The Dell manual really does not specify which CPU's.

Any help would be great, and thanks!

I am 99.99% certain that the CPU is surface mounted (not socket mounted) on the motherboard in this notebook (and every other notebook from the past 10 years). This would mean that it is not user replaceable.

I hope you don't gamble in Vegas, as with your statistics you would bet the bank and loose the butt.
Your confidence factor of .01% of being wrong, well means that you are wrong on this one.
This 1645 is a socket CPU.
I am just seeing how others were successful with overclocks and cooling configs.

Damn. There is a reason I stay away from gambling. 2 second google search says your right. Also looks like the Dell community forums might be the place to ask the question. Looks like several threads on the subject.

Well, I purchased the 920XM, and no issues at all.
To be honest, it was the best $115 money spent on my laptop. The extra 400Mhz has made a night and day difference watching both HD and UHD video. Even, everyday tasks seem to move smoother, from loading web pages to ripping media. Then again, I am using the SanDisk Extreme 480G SSD. So, this laptop is performing like a beauty and this will defer a new laptop purchase for the next 2 years. Use the handy application www.cpuboss.com to make some comparisons between CPU's. I found it to be very helpful.
I love this lappy as it has the E-Sata port which I attach directly to an regular internal Blu-Ray burner (with another power supply), allowing me to rip movies full throttle. Temps recorded with Realtemp and using Prime95 for 15 minutes showed 74, 72, 73, 73 across the cores. So, for people getting issues with throttling, use some good thermal compound and polish the heatsinks. (See pics)
As far as heat issues, no problems as I replaced the factory thermal compound with IC Diamond, and the thermal pads are replaced with Fujipoly Sarcon 150X-m @ 17.0 watt/m-k.
So, the 920XM has breathed new life into my machine and actually crushes a good portion of the "new" laptops.
