Okay so I downloaded a heat monitor and I remember reading somewhere that your graphics heat shouldn't succeed 80C. I had my graphics on all the recommended settings for World of Warcraft and when I am around a lot of water I noticed that it gets up there. And I played Team Fortress 2 today and it rocketed up to 85C so I got out of it because it was randomly freezing for a few seconds in intervals.

I don't think I ever had this problem before..or maybe it was because I never had the monitor so I didn't know.

I am on a dual fan chillpad as well but that doesn't seem to be doing much.

I'm starting to wonder if this is why my hard drive failed a few months back - because I wasn't watching my heat. Is this a problem with my laptop - or do I need to replace something? What should I do?

What it sounds like, is that your heatsink fan is clogged up with dust, and it impeding its cooling. Take a can of canned air, remove the bottom plate of your laptop, and spray out the heatsink fins and the fan, and clean out the dustfilter. That will likely fix your problems.

If that doesn't work, you're going to need to post some more details, like which GPU you have, and what version of the BIOS you're running.

Okay well I took a can of compressed air and i sprayed out the vent on the outside and took the backplate off and sprayed everything including the fan. It didn't help. I know have everything turned down to the Fair/Good quality in World of Warcraft and I'm still hitting the upper 70's

    my specs are
    Dell Studio XPS 1645
    i7 720qm
    4GB DDR3 Ram
    BIOS A09
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
    1920x1080 resolution
    Upgraded 130W power supply
I get a constant 60fps in game with these settings and I had to turn them down to try and see if it would reduce the heating but it didn't work. I am also on a dual fan chillpad with the fans turned all he way up.

This is upsetting :( What could be the problem?

High 70s is normal. As long as you're not around 84C or higher you should be fine. Turning down the settings will not reduce heat, as your GPU will render more FPS, which may actually slightly increase your temps.

Other things you can do to reduce temps is to remove the dust filter altogether, and upgrade the thermal paste. Those 2 combined should drop your temps by 5C at least.

Okay hmm. Well I set everything on fair and turned a lot of things down and it seems to stay steady around 70degrees now. and yeah I have been meaning to upgrade the thermal paste. I'll have to find the tutorial on how to do that again.

And the dust filter is the little vent looking thing on the outside of the laptop on the back right?

Well i m not sure if that works for everyone but; when i m playin games, i m setting up the max cpu usage around %60 in power options. With this, my max temps are around 60-65 C. There should be performance handicap, but honestly i couldn't see the difference with naked eye. It only effects loading times about 10 secs. But there s nearly nothing in game performance.
P.S. I m recently playing Assassin s Creed 2 and Borderlands with full detail except AA
