I bought the laptop with Win7 w/ the software installed, am I supposed to get sound software CD as well? Did you get yours?

As for the Dell branded Win7 disc, I was under the impression that it would restore the laptop to OS w/factory settings including drivers and Dell's OEM software? Or does it offer options for users? I've done clean installs before, so feel free to use technical language in ur response...

    Thanks for the usefull thread.

My question is close to MidtownHD, but please don't use technical language.. :)

i'm going to delete the 15G recovey, but my concern is about the 39M Healthy OEM partition..

I know enough that it's going to be deleted along with the hard disk format<<< i hope this is true.. :)

but you mentioned that you backed it up through windows server...

can you please explain more how to back up the OEM partition, and how to restore it back?

    Thanks.

    Hi buckZor

Great thread man.. Keep up the Good Work..

What is the maximum number of partitions ( both physical & logical ) can Windows 7 have.

I am planning to format my HDD of 500 GB in the following manner.

    1. 50 GB for Windows and other softwares like Office etc.
    2. 4 partitions of 100 GB each for other stuff like movies, songs, personal stuff etc.

Now according to the above mentioned partition plan, I am planing to have a total of 6 partitions (5 mentioned above and 1 for OEM stuff). But my Dell Support rep said that the max number of partitions supported by Windows 7 is 4. That is why I am seeking refuge in this forum to clear my doubts.

I have done clean installs of Windows 98, Me and XP in my deskop, but have never tried installing Windows Vista or Windows 7. So please use semi-techincal language..

    Thanks!!

After a clean install I have the same "Other Device" listed in the device manager, underneath it in the tree are two "Base System Devices" and an unknown device. Does anyone know what these are supposed to be?

In my case the unknown device was the IRDA Controller. Go to the properties of the device -> details -> value. Copy this text and google for it. I found the suitable driver on the dell homepage. Install didn't work for me so updated the driver manually.

Ok.. i read that deleting the OEM partition may void the warranty, and also it contains Dell diagnostic tools if you face a problem and contact Dell and they need to run some tests on the machine...

Anyway, i got a disk management software (MacriumReflect), and managed to create an image of the 39m OEM partition, and it seems very easy to restore back...

    Am i missing something? :)

It's the memory card reader. Drivers for it are under Chipset | Ricoh - Driver.

I did not receive the Soundblaster software with mine, I haven't troubled with getting it yet.

The Dell branded Win7 disc will give you a clean install, it does not restore all the drivers and bloatware. To get the laptop in the condition it was in when you pulled it out of the box you have to run a recovery from the image in the hidden recovery partition (the partition I deleted to recover ~16 gigs of space). Getting to this recovery I believe is F12 at boot time, or is it F8 and choosing to recover.

One thing that should be noted. If you did a clean install of 7 onto a Vista-bought system, this wipes the boot-loader and you can't use the backup restore partition, then. But, really, who'd want to restore back to Vista? :D

I'm probably going to delete it. Wish there was a way to put a clean 7 image on there...

    Hi buckZor,

Thanks for your wipe & reload instructions.

Just to be clear… this is a windows 7(pro) install?

Below are the items I wasn’t able to do because of the following various reasons

What are the steps in getting to these? Some didn’t seem to be the right instructions.

Stop and set the AMD External Events Utility service to Disabled. This service provides for Hotkey polling of your system. Get rid of it unless you use ATI Hotkeys.

    4) From elevated command prompt do: powercfg -h OFF. This will disable hibernation and get rid of the ~3GB hiberfil.sys file @ the root of C:. Hibernation is retarded, don't use it and reclaim those ~3 GIGS so Windows has more space to gobble up with \winsxs (but thats another story).

    - I can not find the events utility service to disable.

    - Don’t know what an elevated command prompt is.
The above steps didn’t work. Can you clarify?
    ---

Download and install QuickSet from Dell. This is the utility that provides on-screen feedback from your multimedia controls, etc. If you manually launch the app from \Program Files\Dell\Quickset\quickset.exe you get:

    - I loaded this from the dell site but can’t launch the app program because I can’t find it in all programs\dell\Quickset\ …

the Quickset file isn’t in that dell folder.
The only way I could find that “windows Mobility Center” was by typing it into the start/search for programs box.
But then I couldn’t seem to save it in my all programs file. Know how to do that?
    ----

    - can you help me find where the systray tsr is in the AutoRuns program so I can remove it?
    ---

    - how do I disable polling?
    -----

    what is “Pagefile” about?
You said to configure a fixed size of 256MB.
When I did I got a message that the program suggested I don’t go below 400MB or windows might not be able to record details if an error occurs.
What would your suggestions be in this case?
    -----

    thanks
    D

How to disable the AMD thing:

    Start-Run-services.msc

Double-click the service and change the startup-type.

    Elevated CMD:

    Start, Run, cmd, ctrl+shift+enter.

Not sure on Quickset, systray tsr, or polling.

If you get a BSOD and you have a small pagefile, you won't get a debug file to analyze. Most people don't know how to use them anyways, but they are useful if you have no idea what just happened to cause the BSOD.

I think Quickset is only the one you REALLY need to use the laptop. Everything else is superfluous.

Dell Touchpad is actually drivers, but Synaptic's (unbranded obviously) is far better.

    @BT issue

WORTHLESS PIECE OF CRAP. Even after two driver installs, none of devices can find the laptop. Both devices are visisble. The laptop can find devices, but then can't do anything more than connect. No file exchange, no A2DP, no nothing. But, no device can find the laptop's BT card.

    UGH.

Edit: After a 3rd driver install, now the laptop can't find any devices. POS.

I've added a BT card to my SXPS 16, it was not available to order in the UK when I ordered mine. I had to load the Dell driver 'manually'.

My Microsoft Bluetooth mouse works fine now I've turned off the setting that allows the BT device to be turned off to save power, and I can see my BT printer from the laptop. I have tried two phones with BT, my works Blackberry Bold can see the laptop OK, but my iPhone cannot. Not tried to actually transfer any data except for using the mouse.

I have been able to connect the iphone to my laptop, and the iphone now shows the Computer on it's list of devices, but it could not 'discover' the laptop on it's own. Why is Bluetooth such a complicated process?

So, after turning all BT radios on and off again, it's working. I had done that before, but somehow this time it worked. ????

Laptopvideo2go has Synaptics on their forums.

I don't see way of getting Dell Dock back unless Dell will somehow send you a disk. If it's not on My Dell Downloads or the Support site, I think the only way left is through Dell themselves.

this is the non Dell version and is freeware from ObjectDock.
