Hi, just wondering what the specifications were of the eSATA port on the Studio XPS 1645? Is it 1.5 or 3.0? also what is the max transfer speed anyone has seen using the eSATA port?

    Thanks

Esata is at sata II speeds. You get the same transfer rate as the internal hdd thats in the laptop. When I transfer a movie off my external hdd from esata The rate is around 50-84mb/s

Yes I use it daily, fantastic with my 1gig external. Built is using a 1gig wd cavier black 7200rpm. Its probably faster then the 500gig 7200rpm seagate momentus that shipped with laptop.

ok sweet, now the reason I asked is I was considering a velociraptor 10,000 rpm external hard drive for games, and maybe a second OS, would it be worth it performance wise? what about compared to SSD?

If its cheaper than the SSD, yes then by all means its worth it. SSDs are always faster but are usually way more expensive per gig. And if you're building your own external with a 10,000rpm make sure you get one with a fan. Dont buy a passive one. I have an AEGIS desktop external hard drive kit that came with a fan. And I stuffed in the cavier black that I mentioned. Works great.

Its all about the price/performance ratio my man, and only you can answer that cause its your money. Either way you go though it should be pretty sweet!
