I am one of the many people here who has a defective Studio XPS 1645 (random crashing and throttling issues). I was promissed a replacement system by a tech support supervisor and Studio XPS 1647 was mentioned by him as a replacement for the 1645 system which will fix all outstanding issues (as claimed by him). I don't have a detailed system configuration yet and will post as soon as I recieve one.

I just don't want to be a beta tester for Dell once again if 1647 proves to have design flaws like the 1645.

Does anyone out there have 1647 yet? Is this an upgrade to 1645 (hope its not a downgrade)? Should I accept this offer or demand a full refund?

Appreciate any inputs from the user community...

no one has it yet.. it hasnt been released. Im certain it will have some issues but will they be as severe as what we have... you will be a beta tester. Id take it.. if they screw that up it gives you even more of an arguement to milk dell for a free upgrade or two.. make sure thier giving you more of somthing than your current system has... I got the RGBLED and 2gb of ram for free for thier screw ups... whine and if that rep doesnt respond hang up and call another... eventually youll get what you want.

They didn't ask me any further question regarding this laptop when I asked for a return. I used online chat, the whole process only took less than 5 minutes.

so Blue did you get your xps 1647 already (what specs)? if so can you let me know what you told them, and how the 1647 came about.

Cause atm I am having issues with my 1645 as well. and soon I will be getting my motherboard/fan/speakers replaced. So just wondering how I can get a replacement upgrade as well. Thanks.

I am currently waiting for a 1647, it was first spec'd with an i5-540 but then I pointed out I had an i7 and that I didn't want to be downgraded so they stated they would fix the issue and bump me to the i7(presumably the 620) and I should be getting it soon.

Anyway you look at it, 1647 is a downgrade from the 1645. 47 only has dual-core CPUs.

This is true, though for those that don't plan on doing anything intensive like PS or whatever it is still more than enough... I'm going to try and get an SSD or something to make up for the diff... wish me luck!!

.....it depends on what you do. If you don't really use programs optimized for multi-threading, the dual-cores are a fantastic upgrade from i7-720/820 because of their higher stock clocks.

Here's as close as an apple-to-apple comparison you will get: it's the highest possible dual-core frequency possible on the CPUs:

    [35W] i5-520M = 2.66GHz [with 3MB cache]
    [35W] i5-540M = 2.79GHz [with 3MB cache]
    [35W] i7-620M = 3.06GHz [with 4MB cache]
    [45W] i7-720QM = 2.39GHz [with 6MB cache]
    [45W] i7-820QM = 2.79GHz [with 8MB cache]

They don't offer the i7-620M any more, but if think you're going to get it, I put it in there.

It's worthless to include the single-core frequency because you'll rarely ever see that on any of these.

The i7 quads are worth more money according to Intel's bulk pricing. For example: i7 720QM ($364) vs. i5 540M ($257). Seems like a a legitimate excuse to push for a reasonable upgrade if being downgraded in the processor department.

That's just marketing. It all depends on what you do with it, thus making it an upgrade or downgrade.

It's definitely a viable excuse if you "want a quad-core", but whether it will be a performance upgrade is debatable.

I agree with you. I would swap my 720QM for a 620M if I could. However, neither processor has better performance than the other in all cases, it depends on what you use it for. In business terms though I don't see how this can be called anything but a downgrade since the 620M costs less.

It's kind of like if you had RGBLED and Dell is replacing your system and can't provide the RGBLED, they now owe you something else. You can argue that you want $1000 of free upgrades because the RGBLED was the reason you bought the system. Someone can say WLED is better because it uses less power. In reality the only fair way is to base it off what it is worth in terms of money.

Right; I'd ask for that extra processor cost I originally spent to be used on something else, true. I'd still want to compensated for the initial cost.

That's why someone who gets a T9900 replaced with an SXPS 1645 gets the i7-820QM and not the i7-720QM even though both are faster. :) True dat.
