Hi, just bought my Dell Studio XPS 1647 from Best Buy, and after a few hours of use I noticed that there was a high-pitched noise emitting from the computer. I did some googling and I found that it is actually called CPU whine! I can;t find a faw to fix this problem!Does anyone know a solution? I don't want to bring it back to Best Buy because I got it for an awesome price ($549.99) and it was the last one left. Here are my specs:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
Intel Core i5 430M, 2.53 GHz
4 GB DDR3 1333 MHz
Thank you so much!

I am not aware of any CPU whine since CPU is not a moving part. It should be either the hard drive or your fan is whining.
-
contact dell and get replacement MOBO and CPU. - But ill bet they will replace the fan, HDD, DVD first....

an cpu can whine, an combination of a bad sample and C6 idle state makes the transistors oscillate in an certain frequention, emitting an high pitched noise only heard by young people.
solution: disable C6 killing your battery life by around 50%, as far im aware, this is the "best" fix avaible.
i tested the result of disabeling idle stated altogether on my p8600 processor:
i know the graph reads c3 diable, it actually means toggeling the disable idle states in windows settings.
the yellow and red lines represent energy usage when watching youtube video's
the X axix represent the processor speed i was using, and yes, higher speeds are actually more efficient at idle as long the voltage stays the same. -

I have the same problem, i bought a cooling pad and havent had the problem happpen since. It was getting really annoying and i was going to return the laptop.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad
in the power settings, there will be an new option under "processor power management": processor idle disable, toggle this. High pitches noise should disappear. -
and so will turbo boost iirc
