Anyone think Dell will release the Studio XPS in an 18.4" form factor ala the HP HDX18t? Both the HP HDX 16t and HDX 18t share the exact display resolution as the Studio XPS16 HD resolution.
Would be nice to see an XPS 18.![]()

If they are going to make one, they are probably waiting for a newer gpu or something to put in it instead of a 9800 or ATI equivalent. -
Studio XPS 3240. Booyah.
-
Or how about a remake of the 2010 under the studio XPS name? I always liked the design of that one, but the components were way too lackluster for the price

Why are laptops getting so big these days? I remember when they first came out with 15.4's and everyone was freaking out.
-
There are really two answers to that question.
The screen is the most expensive part of the laptop, and they're getting cheaper as time goes on. On top of that, with the move from a squared screen format to a widescreen format, laptops can have a much larger screen size before they become proportionally awkward. So on the manufacturer's side, laptops are getting bigger because they can.
Most consumers, on the other hand, are of two minds. One side is looking for the most portable, easy to carry laptop with longest battery life. This has lead to the rise of the netbook.
The other side is looking for a workhorse. A laptop that is full powered, who gives a crap about battery life, and portability only matters in that you have the option to move it without having to disconnect 30 cords and pack up a backseat full of components. This is the side of things that goes towards bigger and stronger.
Now there are also plenty of middle of the road-ers, and that's why the 15 inch notebooks aren't going anywhere any time soon. Then there are crazy folks like me who want a netbook with the power of those big laptops. That, unfortunately, isn't happening any time soon =P -
I used to have a 17" powerhorse... and never used it to its capabilities, especially since I'm a mobile user. And I still keep my desktop around for a reason! (It's nice furniture) -
I initially went with a 13 inch (My xps 1310 which died an ignoble death), but it just didn't quite live up to my needs in the power department and I found myself rarely taking it anywhere I'd want the portability and battery life because it was, well, too big. This time around I went for the monster, the m1730. It should be interesting to see how this one works out, it arrives at the end of this month =)

Sorry, guys...I just can't fathom an 18" lappy...or larger..if so..you may as well just get a desktop...that's just my opinion though.

17" is pretty darn big and unportable... laptops are just getting ridiculous. At that point they should just be called portable desktops (they kinda are). -

But everyone has their own likes

I can see them updating their regular Studio lineup with the 18.4 incher.. to replace the 17 inch since that is still 16:10. And the 18.4 would further differentiate from the 15 (15.6 once it goes 16:9).
Once thing missing from their lineup is a photo workstation like the Lenovo 700.
So, maybe:
Studio 15
Studio 18
SXPS13
SXPS16
Alienware -
18" is a bit far fetched. I don't see dell targeting such a small portion of customers.

Speaking of which why is everything moving to 16:9 now? (also, why did they go from 4:3 to 16:10 in the first place... 16:10 was never a standard was it?)
-
Laptops really started to move to widescreen first, probably because with the release of DVDs they became a mobile media station and were being used to watch movies so often. The bonus was that the wider and shallower form factor more closely resembled a keyboard, allowing for larger screen sizes without a wasted footprint.
As for the actual numbers, 16:10 (actually 1.66:1) is the European movie standard, originally the 35mm standard. 16:9 is the standard HD ratio because it can most easily accommodate all film standards.
EDIT: I was wrong! 16:10 is actually a computer centric format. It's basically the ratio the screen needed to be able to watch a widescreen movie and still see the taskbar. -
Great now when 16:9 becomes the final standard I'll have to sell my XPS 13 and get the XPS in 16:9 format.
I miss the days of 4:3. -
Yeah, and lol..pretty soon we will be seeing 1/2 sizes too.
We just never know with Dell, I always say!

Personally I'm waiting for the holographic, zero weight computers.

Monocles are quite dashing.

screen sizes are all marketing strategies so as to make customers buy newer and more recent formats.
