My wife has an older Studio XPS 16' (Core Duo 8600 processor).

Has been fine and she had hooked up an external Dell 2209WA monitor for photog processing. All been good. Laptop monitor set as Primary and 2209WA set as extended.

Today for no reason the two switched and we cannot seem to switch it back.

We have rebooted (with and without the external plugged in) - no help.

When the laptop is on its own without the montior plugged in it works fine. AS soon as you plug in the VGA cable, the laptop monitor becomes the extended display and the 2209WA primary but the 2209WA does not show anything on the screen and says the input timings are not right and have to be set to 1600x900@60hz - but can't do with that it plugged in as it doesn't show the Windows desktop or windows. If we unplug the VGA then cannot set anything for the external display.

I have tried to bring up the OCD on the monitor but the button doesn't work.

I have just connected the monitor to my own Dell inspiron and it seems to work fine.

Could this be a problem with the StudioXPS VGA port? Or Vista problem? How do I fix it?
