I have heard that Studio XPS 13 has a major heating issue. Is Studio XPS 16 also bugged by the same issue?
I also heard that this heating problem was recently solved/or will be solved in the coming month.
    Is this true?

I know both machines are said to run pretty hot, but I don't think there is a "heating issue" such that parts are throttling or failing due to heat. Some of these cases may even be caused by faulty software hogging up bunch of CPU cycles.

Dell recently introduced a new vent on the 1640 (and maybe on the 1340, too) in order to promote airflow through the machine; I don't know if this has significantly cooled the machine, though.

They did? Since when have they been pushing out models with this new vent?

My 1340 is fine. No real problems. It sits on my desk running on full power and even when I play games there is very little heat.

There was a thread about it a wile back... I don't recall what to search for, though. Some guy was getting a motherboard replacement and the tech brought the new vent piece with him as well.

No that was a mistake. The only machine that had the "Special cap" was a preproduction untit. So there is no fixed cap, still this thing is heating up.

My 1640 doesn't have any heating issues. (bought January 2009)

Internal temps (of CPU/GPU) are perfectly normal, but yes, the underside can get pretty hot under load. But that's to be expected I guess because the laptop's underside is made of metal that conducts heat easily.

We have to start making differentiations between heating issues and heating problems.

The laptop I'm working on right now, an ancient Aspire 5000, has heating "issues" if you will. Under my right had it gets uncomfortable after long periods of time, and the airvent blows out hot air onto my mouse hand (right side). It's no where near overheating, but its not the most comfortable thing to type on for long periods of time.

I couldn't care less if the underside gets hot, nor do I care if the internal components get hot

    OK.
    My 'problem' with heating is
    1. If used on a lap, does it cause discomfort?
    2. Does it crash when CPU use is intensive?
    3. Does it cause discoloration of screen due to the vent?

    1. There have been reports that under load, the bottom gets too hot to place directly on your lap.
    2. As far as I know, no.
    3. No

There are no heating issues. It gets warm, and this heat is transferred because of the metal casing but there have been no actual problems. The temps are below the danger zone so theres no problem. However, if you do want to cool it down and save some battery life at the same time, then I would recommend undervolting.

No, I always use my laptop sitting on my bare calfs and there is no issue with heat. I use it watching MLB.TV a lot, so the CPU is not idleing. The Power Plan is set to High Performance.

It's not true that the bottom of the machine is hot by any stretch of the imagination. The palm rest is actually warmer than the bottom.

But as a disclaimer, I use the 9-cell battery, so there is more circulation on the bottom as the machine is raised a bit.

Well idk about watching movies, but when my friend played Crysis on it, the bottom got very hot.

I mean, for menial tasks I've heard the bottom is fine, but under harsh load from most parts, the heat dissipates very well through the bottom(i.e. it gets hot), but that's a good thing; better out than in.

Really I've heard both extremes of the story. I think it varies probably by configuration as well as the exact unit and what you're doing on it.

Have you updated your BIOS to latest one. The latest BIOS for XPS systems causes less heating as compared to earlier.

Crysis is one of the most demanding games out there.. the CPU, HDD, GPU, and RAM will al be running at max capacity... unless youre playing it on your lap, i dont see why its a problem.

Well I said "under harsh load for most parts" the laptop isn't useable on your lap... Under harsh load means that everything is stressed >_>

For regular use it's fine on your lap my friend told me >.>

I don't see why everyone seems to have a problem with what I say, I'm not disagreeing with anyone lol :p

And btw, yes my friend has the A06 BIOS(that's the latest one right?).

can anyone compare temps on the bottom of the laptop on the studio xps 16 vs the vostro 1700? my vostro gets hot when playing games for a few hours, but it isnt unbearable and i usually have the laptop on my lap when playing in my bed (making sure to leave the air intakes unblocked). Anything a hotter than that and i dont think i can handle it.

I got my 1640 just under a week ago...it was having a terrible heating problem..so much so that my finger would feel burnt while using the touch pad. I updated the bios with the latest update and now it the heat has come to more tolerable levels. But it is still way hotter than my old HP that runs like ice.

Planing to try undervolting...anyone has some inputs on it?
