JUst recently I have found out that the touch pad surface extends further than it should. I have a habit on leaning on my elbow, when I have my laptop on my legs I put my elbow on the palm rests. I found out quickly though that if I lean on it I end up doing a multi touch zoom, to start off with I thought my system was just being rubbish but then I tested it again and it worked fine after I took my elbow off.

This must mean that the touch surface extends further than the edge of the "touchpad", I just wonder how far it actually goes and whether we could make use of it

What do you mean ? I couldn't notice it works beyond the touchpad area.

Don't know what you mean but the synaptics touchpad can perform multitouch functions like pinch zoom, two finger scroll, three finger launch etc

Idk what's happening but it seems to be sensitive to touch outside the rectangular touch area

I doubt that is the case. If it were, why wouldn't they just extend the area? Everyone likes bigger touch pads. There must be something else going on.
I do hope that Dell moves the keyboard back up to where it was on the M1330/M1530 and includes a larger touch pad for their next models.
