so let's not have this turn into a 3dmark thread with countless comparions of the same laptop, but if you have a benchmark not on this thread, or not with your cpu and you have a core2duo, or i7 benchmark, feel free to post it.

If you would like a 1640 or 1645 (myself included) owner to run a specific task, or benchmark, just post, and I'm sure someone can help you out.

maybe potential owners can have a place to see the results they want to know about, ot even decide if they need i7, or if Core2Duo will suffice.

1645 i7 Response under load with different Dell Adapters.

Unit ships with under powered adapter (90W) here is some info regarding using a 130W

    90W______________130W_________Battery

    130W Charging Tests

High Performance Power Plan, all power saving stuff off, full LCD brightness, while sitting idle, this is how long it took to charge the 9-cell. With the 130W. God that was horrible, it was like watching a whole movie, but with no movie playing.

    129 min / 2 hours 9 min

Battery charging under load 130W Adapter.

I let the bettery drain to 10%, and then plugged the lap in and launched CoD MW2, and after playing for one hour, this was the result:

Interestingly enough, after closing that, and launching Crysis 32-bit, and playing for one hour, this is the result:

Just did a new benchmark with FarCry2. If you run this game I'd recommend setting it to DX 10 instead of the default DX 9 for a higher framerate.

    Settings: Demo(Ranch Long), 1280x720 (60Hz), D3D10, Fixed Time Step(No), Disable Artificial Intelligence(No), Full Screen, Anti-Aliasing(None), VSync(No), Overall Quality(Very High), Vegetation(Very High), Shading(Very High), Terrain(Very High), Geometry(Very High), Post FX(High), Texture(Very High), Shadow(Very High), Ambient(High), Hdr(Yes), Bloom(Yes), Fire(Very High), Physics(Very High), RealTrees(Very High)

Total Frames: 13930, Total Time: 284.00s
    Average Framerate: 49.05
    Max. Framerate: 72.02 (Frame:846, 16.62s)
    Min. Framerate: 24.70 (Frame:6125, 125.19s

3% over one hour with 130W? That's ridiculous!

It means its drawing 14 times as much power while playing Crysis compared to sitting idle. Assuming charging time increases linearly with power load.

Whilst I'm waiting for my own 1645 to arrive, can you find out exactly what brand and model number SSD (256GB) is in the laptop? And also run some HD-testing benchmark util like HDTune. There was also another famous one but I've forgotten the name.

Curious about the transfer rates :)

    Max420,

Thanks for all the effort you've done in testing, posting and sharing your results, I'm sure all of us soon to be owners, and owners of the xps i7 laptops are thrilled to see the 130w power supply resolve the issue at hand.

I was wondering though, in the worst case scenario if dell does not want to provide me with a 130w power supply and I have to purchase one on my own, should I just go ahead and get myself a more powerful power supply seeing as how there are 150w, 210w and 230w power supplies available. Not too sure if they are compatible or not, but here are the ones I'm talking about and as you'll notice there are three variations of the 150w, and 210w and only one 230w supplies :

and one last thing, are you happy with your cooling pad? debating from these which would be best for the xps i7, as apparently they are the top 3 rated pads :

So, does that mean that there is another bottleneck to battery charging other than the adapter if the 130w took so long? Was charging linear, or did it get to 90-95% quickly and take forever for the last couple %?

Here's my results. The CPU drops to 931MHz when running on wall power, and goes up to full 1.6GHz when running on battery. These are the same problem they are having on the Latitude computers.

is this just once again confirming that the 90Watt doesnt work?

does the 130 watt fix this?

yeah I want to know that too, I just ordered one. max, can you capture the CPU speed with Tmonitor while on 130-watt wall power and Prime95 and post the results? You can use HWMonitor to check CPU watt usage and temp.

not really. what happened was i ordered a 1640 C2D P8600, and then saw i7 came out with bigger HDD< better cpu for 60$ more. on top of it, the rep that sold it to me said that i7 wouldn't be coming to canada until 2010. so they cancelled my order after i had it for a month, paid for return shipping and sent me a new one in ~3 weeks.

I just ordered a Studio XPS 1650 (i7 and RGBLED) on Monday night. Hopefully this issue will have been addressed by the time mine is finished manufacturing, christ, this laptop cost $1900 (with Cyber Monday discount), how could they not replace a power supply? I'm suddenly regretting buying this laptop.

I wouldn't put too much faith in TMonitor. The last time I tested it, that program didn't seem very accurate at idle.

Give RealTemp and i7 Turbo a try. They were designed with these CPUs in mind and are using the method outlined by Intel in their November 2008 Turbo White Paper to accurately determine the multiplier on each thread in real time.
