Ok, I have been pondering a Studio xps 16/13 as my work requires a 4 year warrenty and dell seems to be the only company who offer this in the UK, grr.

I have had a quick look through the owners threads, eeek they are long! I don't suppose and one nho has been following them could do me a huge favour and sum up the positive anh negative findings of each?

There seem to be a lot of horror stories at the moment and I don't want to buy a lemon, but I can not find an alternative.

Spend more time reading the so call "horror stories" and conclude for yourself if they're really are horror stories. My own conclusion is that 95% of the stories are software/OS drivers issues. Those are usually user generated problems. Not hardware or lemon product. But that's just my own conclusion. I don't want to start a flame war about. You should read it for yourself.

I absolutely love my XPS16. If you know how to properly install drivers and OS and don't install CRAP on your laptop and expect it not to break then you will not have any trouble with this laptop. It runs a little bit warmer than my HP HDX16T, but nothing alarming. Get the RGBLED screen if you are getting the 16". It's an absolute must!

Get it for yourself, and what you want.

Read the threads, and the information provided....In the end, it's your choice.

I think you should go for it! It's a very nice lappy. And, that is what your warranty is for..to deal with any issues that may come up! ;)

I mean, you already have the taste of the wanting it..better make it a reality! ;)

I've never once had hardware issues with any Dell notebook I've owned, which would include the Inspiron E1405 and Dell XPS M1330.

Most of the "issues" seem to be software related, not hardware related. My XPS M1330 is well-built and works fine, so I'd assume that the Studio XPS 13 would continue with that trend.

I would be really interested to know how you feel the HP compares to the XPS as that is another laptop I was considering.

I am still debating between the 13 and the 16, other than the screen size and very slightly better graphics they seem very similar!

I like both laptops. I had the HDX16T for a little over 4 months before I received the SXPS16 a few weeks ago. Aesthetically, I like the HDX16T better. I don't dig the leather on the SXPS16. It's starting be a bit of a pain as it catches dirt and every little bit of dirty stuff on my fingers seem to attach itself to the leather. I knew this was going to be a problem before I got it. But since it's leather, it's easy enough to clean. It's just a pain.

I ended up keeping the SXPS16 because of the RGBLED screen. That was my only major reason for keeping it. I think it's a very good reason and I'm not regretting it :) The other nice reason is that it runs Vista, Ubuntu and OSX all without any major hack.

Trouble is dell is the only place in the uk with a 4 year warranty direct to consumer - have no choise, it is not my money...

My ideal wold be the Samsung x460 but with more power... However the HP HDX is a fine looking laptop, if only hp would do me 4 years :(

I have a feeling that i will get the studio 13. I would really like better graphics and the hybrid SLI will be a pain with linux, but there doesn`t seem to be a laptop that quite fits what i want.. i had thought the Sony FW but intel VT is disabled and I need to be able to run virtual machines..

I see you mentioned osx, care to elaborate, coming from a mac that would be a major selling point as i really want to retain aperture for my photo management..

How are you able to run Mac OS X on the Studio XPS 16 without lots of "hacking?" From everything I've read, it's quite difficult to get OSx86 up and running.
