I love my sxps 16 but wow it does run hot!
During gaming the keyboard, plamrest and touchpad are scorchio!
The underside is also extremely hot but it is on a desk so does not bother me.
I have undervolted the CPU, applied AS5 and I raise the rear of the note book.
As much as I didnt want to have to I just ordered a notebook cooler, I dont belive you should have to buy one to make your notebook usable -
I have the same specs as Ninja's laptop (in his sig), except mine is a RGBLED. Mine barely gets hot on regular use and I haven't applied any new thermal paste, no undervolting, no cooling, etc...and when this laptop is pushed to its limits it just gets a bit warm at the palm rest. Either people are extremely sensitive and have baby skin or they got a bad apple. I really love this laptop, it's the best one I've had. Highly recommend.

about the windows 7 upgrade, is it really just an upgrade or is it the dell full install dvd?

i have a 1530 and twice i already replaced my heat sink and once my mobo (care of dell). I also have a dell latitude office laptop and same thing. Even though its smaller than my 1530, i cant put it in my lap after 30min to 1 hr of usage. Its bottom part gets very hot. Thats the only complain i have with dell.. they have hot laptops. I can actually know if its a dell in stores by just touching the palm rests of the running display sets. If its hot, its dell
but other than that the laptop seems to be ok...
The other good thing about buying dell laptop is you can build it to what you want.. havent seen this on some vendor here in SNG. -
I have: P8600, 4gb ram, ATI 4670, 15.6 1080p WLED, 320gb WD Scorpio black 7200hd, Intel 5100 wireless, BT, no TV-tuner

My experience with "heat" had mainly to do with how your machine was configured within the power options. I can't remember where to find it in Vista, but in Windows 7, there is a power options entry that allows you to set the settings to make your machine run cooler. I did this with my HP DV5 which was running hot when I had it set to high performance, but once I changed it to HP recommended, the laptop ran much cooler and those settings had no affect on performance. Unless you are constantly gaming with demanding requirements, I don't see why you can't "step it down" a little.
Studtio Xps 1640 worth it?
