I have m1530 for more than year and just now it started have a problem with dvd rom...it dont want to read cd (any cd) it takes 1 minute to read it (doesnt matter if it is blank or not) and then it just eject it.
It stop burning (or eraseing) in the middle of session (cd or dvd)

I have tried cd-r and cd-rw and dvd , and many brands. but no difference.

It has no broblem to read dvd..therefore passed the dell diagnostic,

    Anybody know something about it...?

Sounds like there's a problem with the laser head used for CD's (it's not using the same head). Could be something as simple as dirt on the lens.

I always thought that CDs and DVDs were being read by the same laser.

I might have gotten that all wrong. However, the OP's troubles seems to support my notion.

    ok..thanks...i found this in there:

A DVD-ROM pickup unit requires two laser diodes, one for DVD and another for CD since reading CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. media is a requirement for a combo drive. The reason for the second laser is that the die used for CD-R media is not visible to the 630-650nm wavelength of a DVD laser, therefore a CD laser with 780nm wavelength is required in order to read that media.

and because 95% issues is with CD media (specially blank) - it is good to know that i probably need to buy CD cleaning media - not DVD cleaning media, but I was looking in the ebay and now i dont know if to buy regular clening media for cd/dvd (it say its clean both, but does it clen combo drives?) or only for cd-rom.?

if none is good for me than:

I would think that since the cleaning is mechanical cleaning, it cleans whatever head is present.
However, in order for it to spin up, it has to be readable for the drive. So that would mean you would need to have the drive CD-head read the disc, if that makes sense?

And your link? That would work – cheaper and to some extent easier (depending on what is actually wrong with it –it could be dust making the mechanism not move properly - then a cleaning kit wouldn't help, but "exploding" it will).

Not much to explain. You just can't post "Super!" on these boards, as your post have to be at least ten characters long. So it goes "You post is too short".
