Ive only had a short experience with the M1730 (1 month) but its one i want to forget along with my experience with Dell aftercare.
It started with the 2 right hand USB ports failing, thats not a problem as these things happen. The faulty USB`s were replaced by Dell but the same problem returned. Since then ive had an engineer booked 3 times to try and resolve the issue once and for all, 3 times the engineer has failed to show and i never even had a courtesy call from anyone, i`m self employed and ive had to take time off work each time to be here for the engineer which means loss of earnings for me.
Ive no piece of mind with the Dell warranty and aftercare if something goes wrong in the future after 3 failed showings from their engineers, not turning up once can be forgiven as communication breaks down from time to time in any industry, failing to show a second time is unforgivalbe, failing to show for the third time in a week is totally incompetent and down right unprofessional.
Dell rang me earlier as a follow up call to see how things turned out with the engineer who they personally guarenteed would turn up this morning as it was an AM call, i explained the above to Dell and the girl i spoke too couldn`t believe it after she had personally organised the 2nd and 3rd call with their contracted engineers who they out source the work too.
She passed me over to a manager without me even asking as she said it needed to go higher than herself, she was fine all the way through btw. The manager wanted me to try a 4th attempt with their engineers, i said no way and even if he booked one he wouldn`t be setting foot into the house, ive demanded a full refund as i explained to the manager that not only did the laptop give me no piece of mind after a replaced part failing again the warranty and aftercare was even worse and that i had no piece of mind in the future that if anything did fail on my laptop whether an engineer would actually show up after 3 failed no shows in the space of a week.
The battery is also faulty which is something ive just discovered, it shows a full charge but when you power it on battery it struggles to open a browser and it appears very faint as if its transparent, it struggles to do anything and the laptop is very lethargic, ive checked every possible setting and they all seem to be as they should to be powered on battery, it seems like a faulty battery thats not holding its charge but is showing on the indicator that it has 100%.
He said to give him a few hours and he would call me back regarding a refund, ive been polite with them and understanding considering the shoddy service ive had but eventually i said its going back in its box and will be on its way back to them so it becomes their problem and not mine and i want a full refund.
If at any point you need a replacement M1730, specify to them that you want anything but mine![]()
Oh well, the laptop search continues but it certainly won`t be a Dell or Hell as some of you refer to them![]()

Wow, you really have had some hassle, Its a shame because i have got nothing but praise to DELL UK. (well at least the customer services!)
When i first bought my M1730 it arrived without a battery! One phone call to them and they were very apologetic and they sent a battery to me via a courier service and it arrived the next day.
My last DELL laptop before this one was a M1710 and the GPU failed on that after 6 months, They replaced it within the week, Ive also had the screen replaced due to a lot of stuck pixels and again it was done within the week and worked fine afterwards until i sold it.
Good luck with your new machine when you get it -
I mean, it must be very annoying.. -
It was annoying with my M1710 but at least it was fixed quickly.
My M1730 on the other hand is still going strong and ive never had a single problem after a year of owning it so I hope it remains so.
Thats me finished with an M1730, its going back.
