    Alright guys,

    I own a DELL XPS 1640 laptop here in India [See Signature for details...]...

    AND, I finally gave vent to my DELL'ish' emotions and shot a mail to our very beloved Sir Michael Dell for the following issues –

    • Ever falling rubber bumps/guards on the left and right sides of the keyboard

    • Continues scratching on the LCD and keys imprinted on it due to 'screen rubbing against keyboard' syndrome;

    • Dust behind the LCD plastic cover coating;

    • The heat issue;

    • And last but not the least the infamous ‘ 1640 Throttling’.

    I got a call from a Senior Dell Marketing person today and had a lengthy half hour talk with him.

    I tried pushing for replacement but since I got my DELL XPS 1640 laptop via a friend in U.S of A (I am writing in from India), who got it delivered to me here, they say this would be possible only if the system reaches back to the starting point in USA, from where DELL can take over (Dear DELL, I really don’t have the luxury of time for all this playing around.)

    So he has given me the below mentioned options –

    1. A new LCD Kit (having a new (read re-furbished) LCD and rubber bumps, WOW! :rolleyes: )
    2. A new cooling kit (he says Dell has made changes to the cooling mechanism of 1640 and this will help. :confused: . though I really don’t know!)
    3. A 130 W PSU to combat throttling (He admitted throttling is existing in 1640 and he went on to say that adapter replacements are being handed out to people "who know they are having throttling"!!) I really don't know how a 130 W PSU replacement without a BIOS upgrade would help...!?!

    The engineer will be coming sometime next week.

    I asked the kind DELL Rep what would be the next course of action if the adapter does not deliver. He says Dell *may* be planning a batch recall for XPS 1640 (doh!) but like me he too doesn’t know when that will happen.

    Anyways, let’s see how this thing goes…

    Well, I need some help from you all gentle people to verify that the LCD replacement I would be getting is free from problems like -
    1. bleeding edges
    2. dead pixels
    3. Dusty screens etc…

    Any software I can use to check for dead pixels? Also, please let me know what else should I be checking in the replacement.

    AND, would anyone know what manufacturer is best for the 1640 LCD screen?

    My current screen is - 15.6 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p FHD WLED LCD W/2.0MP, XPS 1640 (NO RGBLED :eek: )

    Help me if possible! :)

    Thanks,

    C

    That is something I know replacement will not fix. I had mine replaced. Initially bleeding edges were almost not noticeable. But after 2 weeks of hot air blowing the screen, now the left edge bleeds quite a lot.

    Sorry

    Thanks for the input nikolay... Anyone else from India having a 1640 and experiencing the throttle?

    We need to consolidate this common and irritating problem if we want DELL to offer any kind of replacement at all...

    Please do pitch in people 1640 throttle link

    Best,
    C
