Can anyone suggest the major differences among the two ?
Does XPS 17 that starts from 1499$ has a screen that can actually play 3D or its the same display with ability to project it to a external 3D display ??
Any other problems/issues that are currently there in both the laptops ??

The XPS 17 has an option for a 17.3" FHD (1080p) 3D Display (comes with Nvidia 3D glasses). The laptop's built in screen can do 3D, however battery life will be limited compared to the other XPS models as you can't have a 3D screen and Optimus on the same computer.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
All XPS 15 have Optimus, as namaiki stated the XPS 17 3D does not support Optimus as Intel does not support 3D display. The battery life will be worse on the XPS 17 3D vs the standard XPS 17 or XPS 15.

Is it worth taking the 3D laptop ??
BTW XPS 17 w/o 3D is costing more than the 3D one with the same configuration !!
I am looking for 8GB RAM,i7,2GB Graphics Card
Which is the better option ? XPS 15 or XPS 17 -
if picture quality is important I'd get the XPS-15 with the B+RGLED 1080p display. I dont like 3D myself...still looks gimmicky to me.

3d's a gimmick and tbh the gt555m isn't powerful enough to play games at 720p with high settings in 3d mode... the only reason you may want the 3d would be 3d blurays but then again a 17inch screen isn't the most immersive 3d experience in the world
iirc all xps15 and 17s support 3d output to a 3dtv though via hdmi 1.4, optimus or not
if you're looking for a true laptop (which is easy to take around and actually use on your lap) then the l502x would likely be the one to go for, and the 1080p screen on the l502x is apparently really nice... however the l702x's larger screen and more powerful graphics processor make it more suitable for a desktop replacement where portability is less important and if you're looking to play more high-end games
whichever laptop you decide on - get the 1080p screen option, the "HD+" screens on both of them are quite poor (backlight bleed, poor viewing angles etc)
if you're not worried about 3d I'd highly reccommend getting the non-3d l702x as the battery life is amazing (managed 6 hours the other day on a high performance power profile) and, although it doesn't really compare to a dedicated gaming laptop with a gtx 560M or higher you'll still be able to play most games at high/max settings on 768p -

There has been plans for a new XPS17z, in the same style as the XPS15z and XPS14z. But I dont know the release date for this one.
Anyone knows more about this? -
Does the 3d version of the XPS17 actually have a frame buffer going from the intel GPU to the screen at all? Given that they're mass produced I wouldn't be surprised if they all used the same motherboard. I wonder because there's nothing to stop you from using optimus if you ran the screen at 60Hz from a technical point of view, it just hasn't been implimented yet, I'm also pretty sure that the nvidia GPU is capable of 120Hz in a desktop environment anyway.
An easy way to test this is to ask someone with a laptop which only has integrated graphics to hook up to a 120Hz TV. -

The 3D system has a different motherboard. Those of us that went through trying to sort out the 2 RAM slot versus 4 RAM slot on the XPS 17 know...The 3D screen-board has permanently bypassed the Intel IGP in the circuitry.
I would agree with what has been said in this thread. If you want decent portability, get the XPS 15 with FHD screen and then whatever else. If you don't mind a little less portability (mind you the XPS 17 is still very portable, it's just physically a bit bigger and isn't all that great to use on say an airplane), get the non-3D XPS 17 with FHD. There is no way the non-3D will cost more than the 3D system, I'd check the specs closely from Dell. -
I just ordered the L702x and at first I was hesitant about its size, but physically, it's not really that much bigger than the L702x. Just look up the specs and compare. The L702x is about 1" bigger in 2 dimensions and both are the same thickness!

As far as weight goes, the L702x is about 1.5lbs heavier. What do you get as a trade off for the bulk?
- Better GPU
- Bigger screen
- Numeric keypad on keyboard
- Dual internal hard drive + optical (which someday I may swap out and throw a 3rd hard drive in there)
- Bigger subwoofer: XPS 17 subwoofer vs XPS 15 subwoofer even though the wattage is the same:
XPS 17 Audio: 2.1 Audio: 2 X 5W + 12W sub-woofer = 22W Total peak audio performance
XPS 15 Audio: 2.1 Audio: 2 X 4W + 12W sub-woofer = 20W Total peak audio performance
The only advantage of the XPS 15 is the size, weight and vibrant screen. For some people that's a huge advantage.
For myself, I chose the XPS 17 over the XPS 15. I just hope it ships soon because we're going to Disney World in two weeks! -
and FINALLY found a use for the TV tuner, currently staying in a premier inn doing overtime and training some people away from home... took the l702x, routed the tv aerial from the room into the laptop and then set windows media centre to record stuff while I was on nightshift
not to mention it's hooked up to the hotel wifi and I've been playing BF3... absolute quality, it's times like these I'm so glad I got a laptop and for under £1000 I'm playing Battlefield 3 in a hotel room, worth every penny. -
Agree with funkmasterta's points. I imo dont think 3d is worth it. Much prefer optimus. But if your into gaming then def get the xps 17 due to a better gpu and a extra hard drive helps to store all your games!
