you are definitely getting the i7-820QM processor because your specification shows 1.73 GHz clock speed with 8 mb cache.
your graphics card is ATI radeon hd 5730 because madison is the code name for the ati 5000 series cards and in xps 1645, 5730 is now the only option.

you are getting both the upgraded processor and the graphics card because they have stopped providing RGB-LED in most cases as a replacement.
for new notebooks, this screen is no longer even an option.

    MODULE,PROCESSOR,CLARKSFIELD,XXXX,1.73,8MB,1645 = i7 820qm

    MODULE,PROCESSOR,CLARKSFIELD,XXXX,1.6,6MB,1645 = i7 720qm

    how much better is a 5730 w/ i7 820qm versus a 4670 w/ a i7 720qm for gaming?

The Radeon 5730 has DX11 support, consumes less power, and should be at least a bit faster if not significantly faster.
Both GPU's run on GDDR3 though.

    check these:
    ati hd 5730
    ati hd 4670
    also check this thread

The 5730 is about 20% faster than the 4670 on paper, maybe a bit over 10% faster in real life (though it may be the full 20% faster on a DX11 game whenever one comes out). Plus it consumes 9W less at full load, which is quite significant.

The 820 is faster than the 720, but honestly, the 720 is fast enough. You're more likely to be GPU limited on games than CPU limited, so you probably won't notice much difference.

I received my System replacement today. Only 6 days after I was issues a replacement exchange dispatch. Unfortunately it did not come with the 16" RGB LED as my current system has.
I called dell and explained that I was sent a 15.6 1080P screen. They dell support rep apologized for the mistake and is sending a tech with a 16" RGB LED to install on my replacement system. I could not be any happier with my Dell service at the moment.

Congratz same thing for me. I HATED the WLED screen. The bigger border pissed me off and the colors were so washed out as well as really dim couldnt be happier with my 1645 right now.

The 15.6'' FHD WLED Dell uses(LG) are 60% CG, IIRC, and thus colors look washed out(esp. vs RGB which is oversaturated).

Hey guys, posting here because I'm now in line for a replacement. The CSR said he'd put it in the works today but it might take 2 business weeks for me to get the specs. Although, once I was given a replacement they'd next day air it to me. I'm hoping it's soon.

Old: 1640 - problems with severe throttling.
Core 2 Duo 2.0, RGBLED 1080p display, ATI Radeon HD 4670.

New: I don't know yet! But I am promised a 1645 or 1647. I'm wondering which one I should request (if I get a request) to reduce throttling. There's no guaruntee my new computer won't throttle, but I'm hoping for one that will at least throttle less.

I told him my only two requirements were discrete GPU and 1080p display. He said he couldn't guarantee a discrete GPU. I told him I bought the computer for the GPU, and I'd send back a replacement without one. Hopefully I get something comparable or better.

So I received my new computer and I have a problem...The system says that the service tag on it is no good. I also tried using the express service code converter and had the same problem. ...?

Also, I feel like the lid on the new computer is a lot more flexible than the old (the actual plastic, not the hinge)...Anyone else notice this?

All XPS come with discrete GPU. As for throttling, there is no better solution than applying AS5 and use a 130w A/C along with a cooler.

You have to return your old system and when they receive it they will transfer your warranty over to the new system.

Well, that's assinine, because I'm not going to return the old system until I have the new one working to my satisfaction, and that's not going to happen until I get a clean reinstall of the system, and I can't get the configuration information online without having a working service tag.

I was in the same shape, I refused to ship back my old system until they got everything "right". I called XPS support and my rep was able to chat with the warranty department and get my warranty coppied to the new recplacement before they recieved my old system back. Don't give up just be persistant and polite. It has always worked for me.

You just need to prove them that your system throttles with data to show them. Just say that you want the motherboard replaced with the new GPU. Talk to a sup if tech doesnt agree..

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    Thanx for replying. :)

Bro, I am already getting a motherboard changed due to adapter slot problem BUT they are giving me same motherboard with ATI 4670 that too is not available at the moment.

Also, when I talk to them that can u provide me the MB with ATI 5730, then he says that it would not be compatible for 1645 as it is made for 1647 model... :(

Can u suggest me what to do next ? :D ;)

Politely tell the rep that he is wrong. I ordered my SXPS16 on Monday, and while playing around with configurations, the ATi 5730 is available for either 1645 or 1647 models, if I understand the difference.

Talk to his SUP!! 5730 is available with both 1645 and 1647 in india.

Just tell them that another customer was facing throttling problem and a sup replaced his M/B with the one of 5730. You need to talk to the Supervisor, only they are the one who can provide you with upgraded motherboard.

Here is a catch: you say 4670 isnt available that means the M/B with that GPU is end of life and has stopped shipping so they can directly give you 5730 now.

Harshly tell the rep that he is wrong. :D Actually ATI 5730 is available for both 1645 and 1647. the only difference is that 5730 is default in 1645 and has to be customized in 1647 which rather comes with ATI 565v as default.

    +1.

I also would love to know this. My replacement I just recieved seems to be throttleing really bad while playing SC2. tonight I am going to replace dell's sloppy thermal compound job(haven't checked yet but just assuming) and replace with AS5. With that said, we should not have to do stuff like this....

anodize, You are very lucky that your refurbished replacement is working so good for you. Unfortunately a lot of people out there have not been so lucky.

So far my replacement, didn't ship with its Bluetooth card, came with the incorrect displahy panel and also throttles. Everything has been resolved except for the throttling. If dell can fix that then I will be 110% happy. If they can’t I would expect either my money back or a system that doesn't throttle. I don't feel that is to much to ask.

As an aside... I hate the design of the AW machines and prefer the sleekness of the studio xps's. But with computers, function must come before form...

The problem is some people think they are entitled to free upgrades. I've seen many cases here people intentionally ask for upgrades. I've seen someone from Dell browsing this forum(Dell Chris, I think?) and I can't believe they are letting this continue. Imagine if Dell only offered depot repair service.

As for throttling, try to apply some decent thermal compound and use a cooler. That's how I got rid of my throttling. I wish I got a new replacement for my originally defective 1645 like some others have, but I guess I am okay with my current replacement as it runs just fine.

Not at all, instead replacing my laptop completely is the last thing i want to do... can't afford to lose all the data... and the time it took to configure the whole system :(

but, with the throttle its impossible to work (play :p) on this system....

Dell has already replaced my mobo once but it didn't fix the problem...

Earlier the throttle used to happen withing 10 mins of playing, the multiplier used to go down to 6... but after i closed the game it would go back to normal

now throttle happens after more than 30 mins.... but the multiplier is stuck at 6 unless i restart the system... even more annoying !! :( :(

I already contacted DELL and they say they will replace my mobo+heat sink/fan + ac adapter....

i really wish it gets fixed this time, because my college schedule is really hectic and i don't really have the time to go through this process again and again...

but as cases of other people points out, i hardly believe that this is going to fix the issue and in the end they will replace my system, all i want to know is if that happens what should i accept as a replacement... as simply up[grading to another laptop in the XPS line wouldn't fix the issue... and the only other laptop line in dell i know, which is >= XPS is the alienware....

PS: I would rather have a XPS to an alienware but not at the cost of performance... (performance that i paid for), because I ue the laptop in my class and can really carry a 9 kg alienware everywhere with me, as i do with my XPS...

Apply some MX-2 or AS5 on the processor and the gpu. Make sure you use a cooler when gaming. That solved all the issues for me. Sadly, you have to do something if you trully want to fix the problem.

It's mainly due to heat. When you stress your cpu and gpu and after they hit to a certain limit, they slow themselves down. That's how most people are experiencing throttling. I have no idea about your case. It's weird.

Actually most issues are note heat related it all has to do with power requirements. The 90w adapter did not provide enough power to the system so it down-clocks. On some configs the 130w isn't enough either. The easiest way to tell if its heat is if you stop playing and it returns to normal if so then its heat related if you have to restart its power related.

I assume he has the rgb/4670 combo? But I have the same and I am using mine /w the 130w adapter and a cooler. I have no problem so far except one time where it froze during web browsing.

I bought a backpack and mouse from Dell, and it still said 'in production' for the initial phase, even though they were in-stock at their warehouse. 'In production' by itself means nothing. It could be either, so like anodize said, post the specs.

well, like abrain said, I'll know when its here, LOL,
    my original spec:
i5-540, 4670, WLED 1080p, 4gb, 500gb, I paid $730. So I got CPU upgrade, and GPU. Order date is 8/13, in production no delivery date as of yet.

I was not notified at all of the replacement spec, just find out today in my account, arent they suppose to "consult" with you about the spec of the replacment, not that I am complaining about the spec.

A refurb laptop does not have those numbers and instead they start with "MODULE i7 720qm etc, etc." You guys are getting a brand new system.
