They called me instantly but i am not sure why mine is not as easy as the others above me. i am awaiting him to call back to install software on my computer to monitor my temperatures? SIGH

He was telling me that the new 1645 (5730) do not throttle anymore and only the older ones did.

I have experienced no throttling on the 5730 of any kind. So idk if you have your laptop wrapped in a blanket to overheat or you are trying to push it farther then it can go but i don't believe the 5730 does throttle. If you have the 130w adapter and the A09 bios or the A11 overclocked bios you should be fine

no blanket no dust. playing l4d usually does it for me almost everytime. Also brute force wep/wpa cracking usually does it aswell.

Post a screenshot with temps that really is odd to me.

This is after 3 hours of starcraft 2 max settings. I have changed the paste to Arctic mx4 and am using a laptop cooler ( Zalman nc2000 ) and my gpu is overclocked. I have never throttled with this machine but i had a 1640 that throttled to death. And i have the RGBled screen on here which is known to cause Throttling so idk

Anybody has got any success in trading SXPS 1645 with PRECISION M4500.

They are offering me XPS 15 but i dont like its looks. Also i have got RGBLED screen and the xps 15 has B+RG LED screen.
I know many people have got success in getting AW m15x but i dont like that aswell as its too bulky.

Anyone with PRECISION m4500 as replacement ??

I think the precision is out of their boundary. You will have better luck with the aw instead.

What I told them was that with all of the problems I had with an XPS, I am not interested in an XPS replacement.

I then looked over the XPS build they offered and told my rep that it looked Awesome, except it was a XPS. I replied can you give me an mx15. He said that it would be a significant upgrade and the machine he was offering was already significant upgrade. I replied with an AW build and asked him if since the machine he was offering and the machine I wanted were both significant upgrades why couldn't he give me what I wanted. He then replied with an AW build (the next day). I told him thank you and asked if I could get in an i5(he built it with an i3) and I asked if I could pay to upgrade it to 8GB of ram. I also told him that regardless of the i5 I would take it and included my shipping address. He then replied with an updated build including the 8GB of ram but still the i3 stating there was no i5 for the AW mx15 right now. He also stated that this would be the final build. So I took it. I fell like I did pretty good and I am happy with the results. I am even more happy that they didn't send me a refurb. They are building this baby now.

Hope this can help someone. My entire contact with the Resolution Expert Center took place by email. So I have records of everything. Also they put it in for NBD shipping. That is how the email maneuvering went. You have to keep reminding them of the issues and how you expected a lot from a high end machine, and were just let down. I even told the rep that if I had it all to do over again, I would invest my money in an AW instead.

They are going to give you an upgrade because they screwed up building the 16XX Line. Just don't take the first thing they offer, ask for what you want. If you loose some specs somewhere, ask for a bump in another place. The guys at the Resolution Expert Center have a lot power and want to make you happy.

    Cheers

this is after a few hours of heroes of newerth which is not as demanding as l4d2.
still its pretty high compared to your sc2. I believe it throttles around 85 + or so its been a while since i actually monitored the temps.

EDIT: also look at my battery wear compared to yours my heat is killing it for sure since i maybe unplug at most 2 times a week.

Guys I am desperately in need of help!

Dell took my SXPS 1645 for replacement on the 9th of Feb. Its been 20 days now and they are offering me SXPS 1640 with a P8700 processor as a replacement! The reason they are giving me is that SXPS 1645 is not in production anymore and XPS 15 is not in stock and even if it is the value of my exact config in XPS 15 form exceeds the invoice value or my original system and hence they cannot offer that as a replacement!!

So in conclusion they are asking me to trade in my SXPS 1645 for a SXPS 1640 with lower config in every single component and they expect me to be ok with it. I have spoken to so many idiots from Dell and they are so rude that they actually tell me I can either take it or leave it and they can't do anything more about this problem.

I paid a lot of my hard earned money as a student to get this laptop and I think I deserve a replacement which is equal in spec. Dell is refusing to do the same and they have my laptop!! I am furious as to how corporates in India take customers for granted. I want to voice out my opinion and I need to contact someone higher up the corporate ladder.

I request any one of you here to give me some names and mail id's of officials in Dell India and Dell USA who can help sort out this issue. Those not wanting to give mail ids in the forum can PM me.

The Config I was offered as a replacement for my i7 720+6GB+500GB+BD RE -

I have already mailed [email protected]. If nothing works I am going to write to the magazines explaining the injustice.

    I totally agree with you.

    I was approved a replacement on 25 Aug 2010.

My faulty system was picked up from my place in Dec.

I have had 2 order cancelled and 3rd is stuck in production.

When i mail them they dont give me a reply and when i call them they keep on transferring me from one dept to other or keep on hold for a long time.

@parthg - Whoa! I though my case was bad. I really think I should go to the magazines with this problem. In fact I am planning to write on every major forum and magazine about this. All its going to costs me is a couple of mails and phone calls. I am not sure if Dell can afford bad publicity.

A major car brand was taken down the same way for all their atrocities in India. All the bad publicity was so badly denting sales.

What was your original(initial) order? Specs? How many exchanges did you go through? File a claim with BBB. If you're absolutely a victim then they will come through and offer you a proper replacement, but if this is like your 5th replacement with upgrades, then I see them trying to cut you off.

Dell continues to sell the SXPS here in the form of i5-460M/HD 5730/RGBLED/9cell/90W. Weird thing was they recently replaced the original WLED 1080p with the RGBLED and the 6cell with the 9cell.

I just ordered one with the above specs but with the 6cell (9cell wasn't given before) at about USD1125 (3 years normal warranty + cheapest bag).

Am I in for a steady dose of hell? Can they really refuse a replacement with something like "it is 3 years old"? Giving you a HD 3xxx and P8700 isn't a good replacement (even if the P8700 is probably nicer than i7-720QM for me).

    Guys emailing michael dell worked!!!

i am getting the xps 15
    intel 2720qm 2.2ghz
    4gb ram
    500gbhard drive
    nvidia 540m 2gb
    1080 wled
    stardard dvd writer
    9cell battery
    backlit keyboard.

After they ran some temp test on my 1645 he saw my temps reached the high 80s to 90's he called 2 days later and bam insta-replacement. He said he will try to expedite my order to get it in 1 weeks time but i highly doubt that.

UPDATE - Mailing Micheal works! I got a call back from the corporate office offering an apt XPS 15 replacement. Just that I will have to wait for 3 more weeks as the L502x has not been launched here. As soon as its launched I was promised my replacement.

Dell was very apologetic for the way my case was handled by the system replacement. I felt it was fair. I just want my system back now.

Finally got my full refund for my xps 1645.It only took 8 days for the refund process to take place since the laptop was picked up.
I had 5 motherboards,5heatsinks and fans,Hdd,screen,palmrest,2 times Ram,etc was replaced during the year for heating issue...!!!
In this process my warranty expired this January,so i refused to accept another replacement and demanded for refund or an alienware...
Dell then said to send my laptop in their depot to check the problem, i refused to send my laptop because i had onsite warranty,so i told let the senior tech come here and check my laptop.they told that was not possible and were trying to close the case as my warranty expired.
So i mailed to Micheal dell, next day i got got a call and was offered xps 15 with upgraded specs and extra 1 year warranty, but i wanted xps 17 or an alienware but they said that would not be possible as xps 17 was not available in India,so they offered full refund and i took that happily.... :D
now just waiting for new sandybridge products to launch in india.... :p
And yes Mailing Micheal does work....!!!!!

Contacted Michael about my 1640, 2 MBs, CPU and fan. All this was done a week after warranty ran out. Orig MB burnt up. They sent me a L701x which was awesome of Dell considering I had no warranty. They put no warranty on the new system so I sold it. Too big anyways. I just ordered a L502x i5-2520m, hopes it's alot better. I had to fight to get them to fix the 1640 but they stepped up to the plate when they didnt have to! That's why I came back to Dell.

Just thought I'd post my experience here, as I just got a replacement for my throttling 1645.
I'd been through the multiple replacements thing with my last machine, and was fed up with it, so I emailed Michael dell and said that I wanted a replacement laptop, with no engineer calls to replace parts on my current one.
I was directed to Jacob Isaac who agreed that a replacement machine was the best option, but a few days later backtracked and told me that they would be replacing parts. I went mental and called customer support, who told me they would refer my case to a customer relations team, who would call me the next day.
they didn't, so I emailed jacob again, and after a lot of arguing he agreed to a replacement machine. It was a pretty nice config (I'll post the specs at the end) but didn't have a blu-ray drive like my 1645, so I asked him to order one. He agreed and my new machine is being built now :D
here's the details of my replacement. My old machine specs are in my sig:

Looking at the specs, your replacement is a significant downgrade in the GPU, the RGBLED screen, and the bluray. Dont accept it

I already have accepted it. Looking at benchmarks on notebookcheck, the GPU is very slightly faster than the 4670 and the screen is the same. The blu-ray drive is also the same as my current laptop. I'm confused as to what you mean?

The downgrades that he was pointing are

Slot load blue-ray -> Tray load Blue ray
True RGB-LED -> B+RG LED (Some may say its not a downgrade but to me it is. I just love my RGBLED screen).

I am not sure about the graphic card, but they could have easily given you a 540. Rest all seem ok.

Also 2720 a successor of 720, and 2630 a new processor added to the line. I feel they should have given you 2720. Anyway 2630 is still better than 720.

I see what you mean, but i don't think I could have argued that a slot load blu-ray drive is any better, tbh I don't really care myself.
As far as the components go, I'd have been astonished if I could have got a better machine - the warranty says equal or better, which that system is, so I couldn't have pushed for an even bigger upgrade.
Regarding the screen, having read reviews people seem to be saying that it's either as good, or slightly less saturated and therefore slightly less colour accurate (?) but produces as good a picture so it seems fine to me - I'll do a comparison with my old one when I get it.
Basically as far as I'm concerned it looks more like a decent upgrade than significant downgrade but we'll see I guess.

Yes I also feel that overall the system is slight upgrade. But as per dell's policy all components of the system should be equal or better.

Also if you have a extreme C2D processor in your original machine than even though i7 2720 would perform better than extreme C2D processor but you are entitled to get a extreme processor in the replacement only.

But still being at your place i would be rather happy provided all those heating and throttling issues disappear.

I still feel you may miss some thing like hinge lights, position of USB etc. of the SXPS. But i guess its always like that you like some things of replacement and miss somethings of the old system.

I am waiting for my replacement aswell.

    Enjoy your replacement system.

Thanks, I see what you mean now. Basically, my new system could have been a better upgrade, but either way it's still an decent upgrade and therefore I'm pleased with it :)

I too was happy with my upgrade. I got the machine in my signature (except it came with a 5730 and i3-370M - I fought like hell to get out of the XPS line) I was willing to take a minor downgrade in some places and get an upgrade in others.

My original machine was a Studio XPS 1640 with T9550 2.66ghz Dual core processor, and 3XXX series video card, with 6GB Ram and slot load Blueray player (that I used exactly one time the 18mos I had the machine).

I dealt with sever overheating and throttling issues most of the time that I had the computer, but since I rarely played games I didn't often notice it. I played Dragon Age Origins and then I bought Rift. I could only play for about 20 minutes at a time before it just locked up.

It took 3 weeks for me to get the replacement that i got from dell and I have to say that it is AWESOME.

Dell will certainly do the right thing if you work a little bit and don't settle for just anything that they offer you.

Found out what my replacement would be today for my Studio XPS 1640. This would be replacing a Core 2 Duo high end cpu, ATI 3xxx series mobile video card, 6gb ram, bluray, 256 gb ssd, 1080p system. I'm pretty happy with it. I tried to bargain for the gt555m but that wasn't a possibility. Considering I'm getting this replacement after an accident (complete care) and not because of technical problems (though I did have many), I'm happy with it. It's a significant upgrade on just about everything except ram and hdd. I do need to contact them about getting a 9-cell battery as I just realized they didn't include that.

After patiently explaining tech support about throttling and how its a "system defect" and cannot be fixed with parts, they are sending a refurb CPU. :(

They are not acknowledging it as BIOS problem. According to them, the BIOS problem was fixed in A08 along with the 130W adaptor despite showing them throttling screenshots.

Funny thing, the guy told me that refurb parts are new parts.

Ive gone through 3 refurbished replacements and they create more problems than they fix.

I didnt mention or ask for a replacement system.

The guy kept giving me only 2 choices.

    1. send system to depot
    2.parts replacement.

I emailed [email protected] yesterday. I got a call from the corporate team and he said he would be looking over the case if the parts fixed the throttling or not.

Well its a no-brainer. The SXPS is a much better system. The specs of SXPS are better then xps in almost all department.

I say, If you dont have any problems with the SXPS like heating or throttling then keep the SXPS or ask them to offer you something comparable.

Do you have those issues with yours? It's pretty much the same system. The XPS 15 does have USB 3.0 and much better speakers. Anyone else with opinions?

The SXPS has known throttling issues. I had an SXPS and couldn't play a game for more than 20 or 30 minutes before throttling started and made it unplayable. Try playing something like Dragon Age Origins on it. That would always get my throttling going pretty quickly. Or the new Rift Game. Either one should do it. If it throttles go for the newer model.

Great specs that throttle making the system unusable is pretty worthless. So if you have to take slightly reduced specs to get a working system, then do it. But if I were you, I would ask for comparable specs to the SXPS, it is Dell's policy not to downgrade you.

I've just been told I can get my Studio XPS 1645 replaced due to throttling issues. As I had no time to go through it with them on the phone they told me to configure a machine of my choice to the value of £990 (including VAT) and they'd phone and process the order tomorrow.

Is this a good move - and do my extended warranty and accidental damage care carry over?
