When they do a part replacement, do they use the same parts that you had already? I'm just worried that replacing parts that are known to be unreliable with the same parts but new is going to be a waste of their time. I guess it's their dollar though, and it can't hurt (cross fingers lol).

They will replace with the same parts, word of warning keep your eye on the tech. Ive just been through the same process as you and am awaiting replacement. the tech left screws out and droped the hard drive when. They dont seem to care and certainley don't seem to know what they are doing

Perhaps- a bit of tact on the end user side- drive the conversation into replacement- voice your concerns over parts being the same and not solving- in the case of thottling site nummerous other people on this site that have had the some thing happen- ask what is changing the parts going to achive when others report no change- ask what other "options" might be with out saying "i want a replacement" let Dell back themselves into a conrner.

In my case i let Dell mess up my computer over and over- and mess up the support case - in the end i got much better specs on my new orderd system, then i would have it Dell had done it right the first time,

What im seeing is Dell support, esp in India is taking a hard line- they are trying not to give to much back. but they are going about it wrong. In my case - when my replacement was first opened- I was promised a Refurb, with blu-ray- 4gb, 1080p, and 500gb,.... these were confired by the execurtive level manager ( who by the way was not very nice to me) When the replacement order went in - an AW M17x was ordered- with p8600, 4gb, 250gb and no blueray.... I lost it and sent an email to [email protected]- The next day a new Dispatch was opened and 1 week later an order for NEW 1647 , i5 540, 500gb, BD, RGB-1080p, 6gb, was confirmed in my account.

BTW suport in Phillipines does not seem to have these issues- so im guessing managers in IN are under pressure to keep costs down and not give any conssessions- but it is back-firing once they fail and harm good customers and when word reaches Austin the issues get fixed.

Well not to be rude but a lot of us that are getting these high-end replacements paid a lot more than what you originally paid for your laptop. So for us getting the high-end stuff is mandatory and justified well because we already paid for it. Demanding an i7 upgrade from a P-whatever is a long shot and you shouldn't set yourself up expecting to get what everyone else is getting because our original laptops differ greatly.

Each case is different and handled differently. I myself had no tech calls or visits, no replacement parts or anything. I got a brand new replacement within 19 days of 1 email I wrote, there were no 3 replacement attempts or any of those silly Dell rules that everyone talks about. I feel like everyone is just trying to look for any problem now on their 1640s so they can try to cash in on a replacement...It doesn't work that way..

ed? huh? did they offer you the SSD or did you ask for it?

Well the computer I have now is a replacement, the original M1530 I ordered almost two years ago was almost $2000 but I guess that was two years ago and they compare it to what you currently have exchange or no exchange.

My main concern is that I'm going to have to go through tons of "bandaid" fixes to get the issue resolved. From what I've seen online, people that are having the issue with throttling are only able to have it corrected with a system replacement.

I hope dell comes through for me is all. So far so good up until now with the 1640.

    Hey Guys,

Im awaiting my new 1645 replacemetn with an i7 820qm, I currently have c2d T9900. I was just wondering if I will see any major performance boost with the i7 while gaming. Or is it completely up to the gpu? (4670)

you will barely see any performance difference if not even less because most games dont utilize more than 2 cores. Yes its the GPU that matters.

I called Dell about a week ago. They said that they do not do full replacements for the 1640. They said that they replace the motherboard and exchange the 90w charger for a 130w (whatever it is) charger. And that this should solve the problem. If that does not work they said that they then check if there is a software problem. And if that fails they will replace it with a new model (ie 1645/47).

With the A14 BIOS out that should be accurate. They should give you a 130w adapter and have you update to A14 BIOS.

Exchanging the motherboard won't do anything. Replace with a 1647 is best for the customer, but should not be needed for most 1640's with A14 + 130w.

So I got my specs for my replacement for my overheating and throttling 1640. Looks like they are giving me a 1647. Given what I have seen on the forums so far about the 1647, I think I will be much happier with this one. My only regret is that it does not include the RGBLED display but if I really dont like the WLED, I can always switch them before I ship the old one back.

Haha I have plans to incorporate it in my weightlifting routines, but on a serious note I am used to carrying around my SXPS 16 and a NZXT Cryo LX in my Jansport + all my various peripherals so not gonna be a big deal, and thanks I'm very very very excited.

I called them up when I found out that mine was coming with a FHD screen, told them that my current notebook had the RGB LED so they put notes on my account to send me one after my computer is built and shipped. I'm still trying to work with them on sending me an i7, but that probably wont get anywhere.

The: i7-620M processor (2C/4T, 2.66-3.33 GHz, 4M L3) will be faster in most tasks today than the i7 quads that are clocked lower and turbo lower. Unless you know for sure yours apps can use 4 physical cores the 620m should be top of the line for dual core.

    i7-620M Processor (2.66~3.33GHz, 35W)
    i7-720QM (1.6~2.8GHz, 45W)
    i7-820QM (1.73~3.06GHz, 45W)

Yeah I have been told that the part number 320-8335 is actually RGB LED. Dont know why it is listed as a premium WLED but others here have mentioned it and I have found from other online source that say the same, so I am quite happy with my replacement. Seems like a lot less problems with the 1647.

I mentioned over in the 1640 overheating thread that I got the bios update and a 130w power supply, still experiencing throttling, watching multiplier going from 10.5 to 8 or 6 under heave game load, or using prime95 with furmark.

Here's the email I got when I sent my feedback on the results of the bios and power supply. I asked for his supervisor or manage.

I experienced the exact same problem. The end solution for me was to email Michael Dell and I got a call back from someone in executive escalations the same day. He replaced my system with a 1647. They seem to have less problems with throttling and heat. Mine is still in production so I wont be able to compare probably for another week.

How much do you think I could get for a 1647 with the i5 540m, the 4670 1 gig, 320 gig 7200 HDD, 16 inch 1080p screen, and 4 gigs of RAM? If I decided to sell it I was curious as to what the approximate worth would be and/or how much I could sell it for.

Ok so this is my story. I called Dell. They said they will replace my motherboard and send me a 130w charger and that that will solve my problem. Well they sent the wrong motherboard. So I had no computer for 2 days. Then when they replaced the screen they gave me the 1600x900 screen not the 1920x1080 screen I had originally. Needless to say I am fed up. I am going to call them today and demand a completely new computer. Honestly this is total BS. The people on the phone and the technicians that came to my dorm did their job its the man in the middle that is F-ing up.

Laptop shipped out today! ETA Tomorrow

I just got on the chat though, to have them ship out my replacement RGB LED Screen, the guy said that the value of the replacement is worth more than the price I paid for the computer, so they can't send it to me, and the chat tools went down. Needless to say I have an email from a technician saying that they put notes in my account to have the RGB LED sent out with a 130w adapter, this is rediculous.

I'll let you know what happens

So just as an update, called them back, spoke to a manager, they will send me the RGB LED, told me to keep my current 130w adapter (so I will have two power adapters) only downside is, they wont send me the lcd until I receive the computer tomorrow -_- Oh well, I guess I just need to be patient! haha

My replacement 1647 just got here, how do I know if the power supply is a 130W or a 90W?

Well my original was an M1530 which was then replaced by the SXPS1640 which is now replaced with the SXPS1647.

Well, if you had an xps 1640, you would have the slim 90w power adapter to compare it to, the 130w is quite a bit bigger all around, it looks just like the 90w, but beefy

Well, I just called Dell again today, just cause I am a pain in the , I talked to another agent and they finally created a dispatch for me today to swap out the WLED that was sent with my laptop with a White RGB LED screen to match what I currently have. I'll post pictures tomorrow night when I receive the laptop, I was told that it is brand new also, so we will see what happens.

If any of you need to know how to do a screen swap, I can also post pictures of that too, since I have done it like 10 times already :S

Oh, and I need to buy some AS5 tonight to throw on the computer much like I did with the last one.

Ya it comes up as 90W in the bios so I went online and talked to a representative and had a 130W sent out, took probably three minutes they are very quick about it. I have the RGB LED 1080p screen. It looks frigan beautiful.

Well dell sent out the wrong replacement AC adapter...a tiny 65w brick, the correct item was on the packing list, they just put the wrong part in the box.
The 130w AC is being resent and should be here in a couple of days.

However, overnight the 90w AC adapter PA-3E has developed electrical buzzing/high frequency noises, I could notice the noise before i opened my laptop with the AC adapter about 2 feet away, the high frequency noise increases when the laptop is on and drawing more power, should i be worried about it
