Thank you. I know right. They are giving me an i5 540m and an Intel 6300 wifi card which is not even available as an option for the SXPS16. Its crazy. I am sure the 6 vs the 9 costs only a couple dollars more to produce.

 

I thought the 1645 only comes with the 9cell battery hence the heat dissipation is greatly reduced with the 6cell.

 

Dell just confirmed my replacement for my sXPS 1640. I had heat and throttling issues as well as overheating in the power supply. I had a motherboard replacement and chasis replacement and an audio chip replacement for the audio problem I had.

I looks like your getting a 90w adapter, call in to change the 90w to a 130w

 

My understanding is that the 130 is for the 1640 and 1645, not the 1647... Mine came with 90w - my thottling issues are gone...

 

Its weird that you got a 5400RPM drive

 

I was getting my 1645 replacement. It shows 'in production' but now shows 'cancelled' in the order status.

However, I looked up 'my order' info and Dell already sent the replacement documentation from what I could tell from the new order number.

This package weigh less than 1 lb/ 0.5 kg based on FEDEX info. That is all the info I have on at the moment. It doesn't seem that this include my replacement 1645.

Can anyone shed some light on this matter? What should I do now? I already emailed the rep that is on my case. TIA

 

Its also available for the 1647 and works with the newest bios just like is does with 1645. I am using it with my 1647.

All laptops ship with the 90w unless requested otherwise. The 130w is available for the 1647.

 

I dunno if I got the 130 with my NEW replacement because I requested one for my first XPS, but the NEW 1645 that came in the xps box had the 130 with it... received it a couple weeks ago. (it is going back soon; HOT!)

 

I have a question regarding hard drives on the 1640. I whould like to know what HDD models come equiped on the 1640 @ 5400rpm (I ordered a refurb 1640 with P8700 and Ati 4670 and it has 320gb 5400 drive)

Why did you have yours replaced if I may ask?

 

i have a blue tint on my screen and also a heat issue. I know they run hot but but this one was so hot i couldn't even touch it

 

You think the i7 820 will be cooler? I am in the process of replacing mne and I can't stand something this hot.... not sure what to request myself??

Unfortunately I could not reach you on Monday as decided because I couldn't attend office due to a personal reason and a REP of ours had called up to inform the same. However; on seeing all your email replies, this is to confirm that an XPS 1647 with the i7 620 is not an available option since its EOL (end of life). The XPS 1647 was ideally with either an i5 or i7 processor and we have already given you the better XPS 1645 with an i7 720 processor.

> We can offer a replacement with either a Studio/Inspiron laptop as a "FINAL" exception (since no Alienware can be given as it's from a different segment).

I have never seen them go straight to legal, unless you had broached the subject first??

You are between a rock and a hard place, as you have run out of options.

If possible, I would take a replacement 1645, and SELL IT; as you no longer have any leverage.

No idea about the legal part? I have been going back and forth with them, basically them putting me off for another day after day after day...

I am getting quite sick of it to be honest, and just am trying to get a system with like specs....

Dell just told you to take a hike!

Pick either:

1. Studio/Inspiron laptop as a "FINAL" exception (since no Alienware can be given as it's from a different segment).

2. Finally a refund can be given for the refurbished STUDIO 1536 that was purchased initially from Dell

3. Else you can approach the Dell Legal team and the address is as follows: blah, blah blah..

You went from a refurbished studio 15 to a new 1645, and you are still not happy.

They offered you like for like, a 1645 with WLED. You wanted a 620, and a 1647.

Why should they? A 620 is a downgrade, equal or better. They offered a 720, you declined.

I think that they have caught on that you are trying to game the system, and they do not want to play any longer.

I got an AW because there were no more RGB displays. Equal or better. They gave you much better with the 1645, and you're still not happy...

At this point, I would have them fix the 1645 that you have, and sell it; or take the 600 bucks, and move to a different manufacturer.

Just my take on it.

I HAVE the 720 now. and YES, it is a SPECTACULAR upgrade,

This machine is really fast sure, but I don't know about yourself but I can't stand how hot this thing is, throttling even or not.

I need a different laptop regardless because this one has MANY problems like clickiy hinge that doesn't always notrify the copmuter to turn on the screen, the light on the hinge goes out, LCD lid is horribly bowed, and to top it off, this brand new systems windows sticker is already falling apart!

ALL THIS on a NEW system... and a 620 is not a downgrade compared to the 720 bud, check it.

I will let you guys know what comes of this.

he's obviously trying to game Dell's friendly system exchange. Dell gave him a $2k 1645 for his posh $700 refurb studio. now, he's just being anal about cosmetic flaws (whether this is true) and the so called 'heat' issue. yes, the i7 720qm gives off more heat but so does the 620 at maybe a few degrees less. Dell can even go on to argue that the 720 heat is within specification.

what is worse is that people who have legitimate issue for system replacement, will get a more skeptical response from Dell. Dell is probably taking more of a hard line to system replacement over throttle and heat issue now.

Agreed. You bought a $600 system and they exchanged it for a $1600 system. Use your warranty to fix the issues it has or take the $600 refund they are offering and go on your merry way.

The reason I don't call up Dell is because I have been dealing with this same rep and he has been very helpful and has more power in the company to do what he feels compared to the people you get on the phone.

It isn't my fault they upgraded me WITHOUT my knowledge OR request, and yet you have the audacity to make fun of a kid who doesn't have money and is in college because he bought a refurb studio for 600 bucks and got a "2k" system in return?

In the spirit of the thread, and with regards to the OP; I would like to offer the following suggestion:

Plead with Dell to replace your current 1645, with another 1645.

Since you mention that this replacement is running hot, the screen doesn't turn off, and the hinges don't align; I don't think that they will be able to repair it to your satisfaction.

Once you have your new replacement, don't open it; sell it.

I'm sure that you'd be able to pull about 1250 or so on Ebay.

Or, take the cash offer, and buy an Alienware M11X.

Awesome machine, terrific price.

Well the screen turns off, just not always on!! haha

I tried selling mine before, althought I did not use the last resort being e*bay and no one wanted to buy it.... Look at my specs in my sig... Who wants an i7 with a 900p screen?? No one and I was unable to sell it for even 12.

I am waiting to hear back from the rep and I will let you know what comes of it.

Thanks for the advice on selling it, but my hopes being that it is warr/ though 2012 and this is a beast, there will be a new revision sometime in there, and I will not hesitate to ask for it.

When you enter in the service tag, it should show you current configuration, as well as original configuration.

Why would i whant to order the 130w adapter? the 90w its hot but will it fail in time or what?

 

I'm not as familiar with the 1640, with my 1645 the 90w got hot enough to almost burn me, and developed a loud electrical buzz, then was replaced with the 130w. If you don't play games or other intensive tasks, you may be fine with the 90w. The 130w should be a free exchange from dell.

An update to my situation

After sending a tech out two different times to replace the heatsink, fan, and screen, and sending the wrong parts both times, Dell called and said they are sending me a replacement system.

They called a couple days ago and said the RGBLED screen were no longer being manufactured by AUO and gave me an option between a better CPU or more memory.

Overall I'm happy, I just hope I don't have stuttering problems like I did on my original XPS 16. And I'll kind of miss this RGBLED

 

While I am being ignored by my Senior Adviser rep, I was hitting up the chat about our issues we all live with and am getting some laughs....

1. How they always ask if this XPS is running windows 7.. DUH?!

2. On the issue of throttling "As you have mentioned the system has latest bios , we would need to pull the system to depot to diagnose the issue further."

... Uhh... "I think knowing that not only the refurb was seeing this issue, along with the brand new one and everyone else's on top, it is not just a fluke in hardware" I said.


Gosh.. this is so much fun...

Update: So they are sending me ANOTHER replacement.... We'll see what comes of this!

 

Sweet upgrade, you got all the goodies in there . You know, if you asked Dell they'd probably let you "transplant" the RGBLED from your old system onto the new 1645 you're receiving. I mean I really don't see why it wouldn't be possible, as it seems like Dell might be phasing out these RGBs. If it was possible, you could wait and receive your replacement, compare the two screens to see which was better, and if the RGB trumped the WLED ask them if they (or maybe you yourself, if you can) could put your good ol' RGB unto the new one. Just a thought... . Congrats though.

 

I think I remember reading a post where one asked a Dell rep if they could and they stated yes.... I can't find the post though.

 

Just got my new 1647 today! My original and new specs are a couple of pages back. Went from a 1640 to 1647 for heat problems, replacement was delivered and just checked my serivce tag online and I have been given 1 year warranty on everything even complete care, even though my old one expired last week. Must be something to do with NZ warranty law. Stoked!!!

 

Hey ppl what exactly are the overheating issues? Coz i ordered a refurb 1640 (P8700+Ati 4670) and i see on some sites they say its nothing unusual just normal temp for a cfg like this.Does it brake down in time or just throteling ?
