I think the real solution is the obvious, and that is less power hungry componants; A newer dual-core compared to that quad and a reg. ledlcd(not that I do not believe that the RGB is a great piece, BUT) will probably get you to a level of power that the system won't bog down due to not enough power being offered.
I know some cannot live without that screen, so if you HAD to lose it, meaning they do not offer it anymore, I myself would probably have them bump you up to an SSD with the i7-620 or even the i5-540 will be powerful enough for many.
After a few replacements all being 1645's. they are in the proc. of shipping me out a 1647...
Hope this helps...
-
yes, it does, thank you!
hmmm...dammit the indian site just has one processor option
i remember when i bought my laptop there were more though....
just checked they do offer the RGBLED screen still.....
looking at the options the only thing i can ask for is a new GFX card...
1647 any better than 1645? -

cbaty,
Getting this AW was not very difficult; equal specs or better. I had to go all the way up the food-chain to do so, as their reps are trained to say no, and they're very good at saying no.
I politely pointed out that since the XPS 1645 no longer had an RGB option, there were two systems that did.
They could send either an AW m17X, or a Precision 6500; as those were the only two machines that had an RGB display.
You have to know what you have, and you have to know what Dell is currently selling.
For the record, this is what the 1645 should have been. It's quiet, cool; and most importantly, does not throttle.
The only downside is that it weighs a friggin' ton.
Good Luck. -
-
you think i can sacrifice my hard-disk (go with alienware 250GB option) and go with th WLED alienware option to replace my XPS?
im just a bit worried that even my new XPS is gonna have overheating, throttling problems all over again.......and i dont want to let go of the quad core....i do 3D designing and the 8 threads really help
i paid about 90k INR, thats about 2.5k$ for my XPS....im not sure if Dell has the same prices world-wide..but im pretty sure an AW is within the 2.5k budget -
-
micvic21,
Good luck trying.
It takes an act of god to get Dell to switch product lines.
Your current system must have something that Dell no longer carries, in that chassis.
The 16" RGB display was one of those instances.
In your case, I don't see that happening. -

well guys I got the specs for my replacement. going from the 1530 in my sig to this
-
Congrats benbeck08, you received the infamous RGBLED, i7-720 combo (RGB is fantastic, you'll love it!).With a 4670, 320GB HDD 5400 rpm, 6GB 1333mhz RAM, and a Red color on your laptop too. I know that Cin' also has a red XPS 16 laptop, and it looks really nice. And at least they sent you the 130w adapter to save you the trouble of having to call them up. Very nice. You happy with it?
-
Ben,
Nice specs. Why the downgrade to a 1080 display? -

I just signed into support.dell.com and clicked on the order. then I used alt+Prnt Scrn and copied it into paint.

I knew to take the screen picture. I mean where you find detail single part price.
-
Sign in to support.dell.com, click on 'Order Status' towards the top right of the screen, set the date range to include whenever you bought your laptop (may already be there), and then click on the order number for your system

Just got my 1640 in yesterday and its great. It runs so much cooler compared to my other 1 with the hd3670 & RGB screen. But my RGB screen for this 1 should be coming in today. Hope its a good 1 since its probably a refurbished screen. But I cant complain through all the dell struggle & hrs on the phone. In 4 yrs I've went from a m1210, m1330, xps 1340, to a 1640. This is a great system i just got to update my sig.
-
. Strangely I get some kind of hope from knowing that if my laptop develops problems I could push for a replacement, like it seems you've had to put up with. I know that the struggle and the calls are never fun. I really hope this one works out for ya though.
-
Yea all replacements, though I love this xps 1640 I miss my m1210. I waiting to see how the revised alienware m11x is, because it reminds me alot of my old 1210.

So you get a video upgrade out of all your issues.? Everything else is the same?
-
The only real upgrade I could really want is a SSD.........
**Mind you this whole setup is upgraded from a $600.00 15" studio refurb!!!** -
thats cool - how did you get the added warranty?
-
-
lol...cbaty,
After reading your other posts, I would have to say you are trying to take advantage of the dell reps, and seriously taking the nice laptops from other people who genuinely need them. You have only purchased a refurbished studio, and you have fought through two system replacements of much better priced systems.
I honestly think you are trying to screw others for you own self-satisfaction. I am receiving a studio xps 16 too, but that was because of numerous issues I had with dell. I truly think you have tried screwing the people who really need these systems over. I have fought really long (over two months) to get them to replace a xps m1330 to a studio xps 16.
I was sent a newly built studio 1457 as a replacement to my xps m1330 because of the power issues I have been experiencing and graphics card failures. The studio 1457 was a great machine (w/ Core i7, 4gb RAM, 500gb, 512mb ATI radeon 4530), but it came with two defects- random freezing issues and high pitched whine from the power adapter. After a motherboard, hard drive, heatsink, and ram replacement of this brand new machine, I asked for another system exchange. (The replacement parts did not fix my problem.) I specifically asked for a xps system, since my original system was an xps.
Guess what they sent me- a Studio xps 13, this time with worse specs to my studio 14 (core 2 duo processor, lower resolution screen, refurbished) AND not to mention the computer had light failures on the hard drive status light and the power on hinge lights.
I asked for another replacement because dell had already sent me two defective system exchange laptops, and they would not budge, trying to give me an ultimatum (send my studio 1457 to the depot for a fix).
After spending many hours on phone and chat with dell, I finally reached a nice representative who was willing to assist me, and yet, she still only offered me either (the same studio 14 system exchange, or a studio xps 1640, with a Core 2 Duo processor).
I was pretty angry already about the actual physical problems both my system exchanges were giving me, and Dell kept promising to call back in a couple business days but never did.
After two weeks, I finally had it and got a nice Dell rep who was willing to help me. All they told me was that my studio xps 16 will be equal or better to my current studio 14, which was what I wanted all along for the past month before they sent me the studio xps 13.
As for you, consider yourself very lucky. I did not pay 600 dollars for a refurbished system originally. I paid over $2400 for my Dell XPS new. If I were in your shoes, I would be extremely happy to get that Studio XPS 16 as my first replacement, instead of asking for three additional replacements of the studio xps 16, and maybe even pushing for an alienware. You, sir, are just out there to screw people like me over from getting well deserved systems. It is people like you who prevent others who actually deserve these systems.
I am not trying to be mean cbaty, but seriously, that is what you come off as: someone who wants to get the best for himself even though he doesn't deserve it. Sooner or later, it will catch up to you.
In fact, everytime I see a new post from you, I cringe. I feel like you will start complaining about the Studio xps 1647 you are receiving and try to push for an alienware... -
@mathnerd88: hey man dont bash ppl in forums. you have the right to your own opinion but dont judge someone that you dont know. very disrespectful
-
First of all, what he is doing is disrespecting people who actually need these systems. I am sure cbaty is a really nice guy; he helped other people in the forum get the systems they deserve. I am just feeling disappointed that people like him, who pay a lot less than I do, get better treatment and can go through that many awesome system replacements and still complain.
I am not judging him by his personality, but by his actions. I'm sure if you were in my shoes, you would understand what I mean...
Think about it in this way...If I pay a lot to get great customer service and great care for their health insurance, but sees someone who pays less (significantly less) and gets even better treatment and healthcare than I do and I see him taking advantage of that, I would be angry at him and at the insurance company for letting it happen. So no, cbaty is not completely at fault there, Dell is also. -
-
(See page 33 last post, 34) -
-
No I understand, and I really really hate to bash people. It's just not my cup of tea. It was just after all the experiences I have gone through with my systems have not been pleasant. (going from an xps to a studio, then going to a downgraded xps from the studio)
So I apologize for bashing you, cbaty, but I just feel like you should be happy with what you have gotten or what you will be getting. -
-
Though I don't go on rants about my previous problematic-filled experience, I will say that my studio 15 had to be sent back to the depot 3 times, twice for the same issue that was never fixed. Second of all, I never even knew I was going to be upgraded and even extended my warr. with expectations set on the same system and not an upgrade, which was all Dells doing mind you, never once asked for it......
So, like other owners of this laptop I have my issues with it and I don't think that whether or not I paid for THIS exact system should really matter, it should still satisfy me like my first one did.
Anyways, move along fool. No one likes a hater.
And for the record, if you have been keeping correct tabs on my posts you will find my joys with this laptop. And I am sure there will be many more to come with the upgrades I was given. In total after I refuse tomorrows delivery due to wrong specs and get the one after that, I will have gone through 8 laptops in a little less than a year. My point is that we all have our issues with Dell and we all hate it just like the next guy. So don't get all high-horsed thinking your issues are more important to than anyone else's. -
sorry, delete this post
-
And nobody likes a moocher...
Seriously? 8 laptops in a year? that is like one laptop each time in a little more than a month. There is no way that all of them had issues. If I had gone through that many laptops in a year, I would feel terribly guilty trying to make the dell production team produce that many laptops especially if I didn't pay much for my original one. You are the reason why dell has to increase their prices for their warranty or laptops, and this practice also causes failures in our economy. With all those workers making the laptops, I feel sorry for them, not being able to turn over just even a slight profit because of you.
This is like you paying for a used car, and then making the manufacturer give you a brand new car due to a lemon not once, but eight times. (being overexaggerative, of course) In this case, the car manufacturer would give you a refund, not a better car. If you are really that unsatisfied with dell, you should really just take the refund you were offered in the first place and buy from another vendor. Both you and Dell are unsatisfied, no doubt, so you guys should just split like that and you should just take the refund. However, you are just trying to abuse their goodwill. Obviously, you did not take the refund because you knew the laptop you are getting costs MORE than the money you paid for. I'm also sure you would decline, if Dell just offered you a refund and go on your merry way as an ultimatum to your issues.
Congrats though, I don't understand how Dell can let you abuse the policy like that. -
And keeping tabs on my posts you can probably see the other 4 issues that were legitimate 3 being due to the throttle/heat issues and one other.
Trust me, I don't have fun having reinstalling windows and configuring it every few weeks or sitting on the phone with Dell, but I deserve what I paid for; A computer that suits my needs.
Now that I have justified my side, will you just stop? And your analogy is quite funny..
And abuse their good will? What, like every other 1645 owner has been so happy with its performance?
This WHOLE forum almost is all about the problems; Get a clue.
Your solution to the situation fits your attitude, Take the money and run leaving the relationship with Dell done with. I gotta ask why? WHY do you find it better business to have a customer leave unhappy about a purchase rather than be compensated by the manufacturer by THEIR recommendation? -That's just stupid. -
The technician just got done trying to replace some parts in my 1640, they replaced my mobo, lcd, palm rest, heat sink, and heat sink fan. Everything looks dandy but still getting throttling issues, apart from that the palm rest they put on has defective touch media keys, and they took away my leather trim from the LCD. However my main concern is that the screen feels different.
So my question is... is there a way to verify that they sent me a correct RGB screen replacement? Maybe its all in my head but it bothered me that they did not notify me the replacement would be sans leather upgrade. -
Hey guys, cut the "jabs" at each ok?? This is the Dell forum we are supposed to be helping each other out, etc.
Not one person is better then anyone else.
If you have an issue with "one another" you should prolly take up with each other via PM or something....
I foresee a Mod Intervention if this is kept up...sigh.
@lilyang You can prolly go into Device Manager and check out what screen you have.
