"Dell is having some issues with their invoices, particularly with monitor choice. If you ordered the RGBLED and it says WLED, don't worry: you still have the RGBLED, it is just marked incorrectly. Some users who ordered the RGBLED have these part numbers:
320-8335
320-8341

My Studio XPS 16 was delivered to me at 12:05 Eastern Time. I am in the process of doing a clean install of Windows 7 RC as my laptop was installed with Vista. I will have to wait for the Windows 7 Upgrade when I can register the service tag for the free upgrade.
- Garrett
Cin, thanks for the congrats! -
So, who has a list with questions ready?
-
Please install coretemp.exe and let us know what the temps are like. That is all I want to know before I order one.
-
There are 2 basic questions :
- heat
- battery life -
I'm planning on buying a 1645 when I hit 1645 posts -
-
I too would love to see it with the back cover off if you are comfortable doing so.
But give us your first impressions so far! -
2by4 -
Screw the photos, review it and tell us about heat, battery life, and weight. I know it's fast, I don't care about benchmarks and the rest of the components are the same. I know cosmetically it hasn't changed much, even if they revamped the cooling - but is it good enough to cool it and has it added any extra weight (hope you have an accurate scale)? And if possible, try any undervolting software to see if it works! -
Hi there, garrettwp.
First off, let me congratulate you on being the first person to receive your LONG awaited Dell Studio XPS 1645.
If you dont mind, I have several questions for you about your laptop, and if you could, is it possible to send me the results (or post them and let me know) about them?
Can you download these apps and report back?
Useful Tools to Benchmark your laptop:
CPU Z for CPU information
GPU Z for GPU information
HWMonitor for temps information
Futuremark for overall benchmarks
PC Mark Vantage gives results on the system, but offers better results on Vista.
PC Mark 05 more benchmark tools
HDTune for the HDD is a good way to measure its performance
3DMark Vantage for 3D GPU performance
Core Temp for checking your CPU temps
RMClock to be in control of you CPU, throttling, temps, frequency (can be used to overclock, but not recommended since it voids the warranty, and the i7 is hard to overclock. NOT SUGGESTED TO OVERCLOCK)
Battery Eater to check the battery runtime of the laptop, both maximum and minimum.
And if you want to know if your computer can run any game I suggest this website:
Can You Run It
I know I am asking a lot, but basically it is all the information people want to know. Temps, performance, battery life, and all the info most of us want to know about this laptop.
Thanks for your patience and for conducting this, I am sure most owners/gonna-be-owners/people-considering are going to love to have this information at hand. -
Sorry to dump another shipping problem post, but I need an opinion. I ordered on 10/9 and I still have the old Wifi. I talked to a sympathetic Dell rep. He can cancel my order and replace it. However I won't get any priority. The EDD would be the 30th. Or, I can just try and gamble and wait to see what happens with this order. It is stuck in limbo and has an EDD of the 19th, which I'm pretty sure isn't going to be met. What would you do?
-
Well I had not had much time to play with the laptop. I will play with it more when I get into work tonight (work night shifts). But as for heat, it does get a little warm nothing serious. This is with light usage i.e. browsing the web and installing applications etc. The Temps for all four cores in this usage hovers around 49C. The weight is not bad at all I would say it is a little heaver then the 2008 13inch white mac book that I was using preciously. I can not tell you about battery usage just yet. I will keep you all informed. I will try and get the cover off tomorrow and take some photos. If anyone else receives the laptop and can take photos of the internals it would be appreciated. Until then you guys may have to wait another day or two.
- Garrett
p.s. the RGB screen is really bright. I have it on the lowest brightness setting and it still is pretty bright. -
120 degrees F. Is that hot? It seems hot to me.
-
xps 1645 is on india website from today (sooo late)... will order it after few days when the reviews and benchmarks come out...... I just wanted to ask garrett that when he got the average core temp what was ur approx room temparature.... i live in india where the climate is tropical.... so its essential to know.....
-
any quick info regarding battery life would be deeply appreciated..........
-
Under 50C for light usage is about normal for i7. Ambient will have an impact on this, but assuming he tested near normal room temperature 68-72F that is usable data.
-
My room is a little warm today due to being 68F here in PA. I do not have the air on and have several computers and my 50inch plasma on. I would say my room temp is around 78-80F. Here is a quick shot of the internals. I wanted to get this posted before I need to go to sleep and wake up for work in a couple of hours.

One fan for all of that? I find that worrying...
The Envy 15 has 3 of them and still gets to warm up when gaming... -
WOO!!! Finally got ahold of someone who knows what's going on! He confirmed that my laptop was going to be canceled in 2 days, pushed it through manually, and bumped me up to next day. Also I'm getting a 35$ gift certificate, which is pretty crappy compared to some of the upgrades you guys have got, but I'll take it.
For those still have the old wifi part, call 800-247-2076. Explain the problem in detail. Chances are they won't know what you are talking about, so you may have to ask for a supervisor. The guy knew the exact problem. He canceled my order and is re-ordering it with the correct part number. -
-
i too find it rather disturbing that there is only one fan for all that heat
-
Mine's scheduled to arrive within the next 2 hours. I'm glad you opened the bottom up, Garrett -- like others I find the solo fan worrying. The solo fan might be okay for people using it solely for business/text editing purposes -- but I do a lot of photo manipulation, movie watching, and FPS gaming.
Well if the 1645 burns a hole through my desk I guess we'll be seeing the first batch returned shortly! -
Grat's on the arrival of your lappy again!
Your surely the most wanted now!
Get to know your lappy! Take some pics & provide the feedback and findings back when you can! Enjoy & and so totally Pwn it!
You've waited so long to get it. We will all be here waiting, patiently!I'm sure other owners will be rolling in soon enough, and can provide feedback also!
Grat's again...on what I'm sure will have proven to be a long, worthwhile wait!

Sorry to back track back to the order status issues, but for anyone who still has the old wireless card number and is hoping that Dell have fixed it and that your order won't be cancelled, well, it's still a problem. I ordered 10/5, with EDD 11/6, then on 11/3, got delayed to 11/13, still with the old card number. It got cancelled a couple of hours ago, new order put in with Windows 7 and new wireless card no (and now next day business shipping), EDD now 12/8/09. On other other hand, very glad to see people are finally getting their laptops!
-
Mine was delivered today!
I may grab run over and grab it from the university post office, but this weekend is when I can REALLY run it.
Garrett, if you'd like we can split benches, but I won't have too much time.

I just received mine today!! ww/ WIN 7!!!!!!!! Anyone know what the best benchmark for this machine would be? I tried running 3dmark 06 but it asked me to install directx 9 and 11 is installed......wanst just going to go to 9c!!! let me know!!
And what are some good scores/temps for these alll? I will try to test them all and report back..... -
-
One fan blowing an i7 and all the other component.. thats gives me the second thought.
-
Congratulations to those who have had their systems delivered!
These temperature results should be interesting... -
Hey guys ! I'm following your posts from the first subject opening to now! I ordered it in france and all I can say is that Dell's services are crap in europe to ! EDD canceled or delayed every week. My EDD is first december... damned. Lucky guys u are ! Can't wait for the stress test heat results and benchmarks scores ! 3dmark06 would be great but if it runs with DX9 it's true that you will not find any easy way to evaluate it...
Grats to the winners ! -
Looks like the first xps 1645 has been received in europe ! In france. He had an EDD 7th of december and received it today. EDD looks like being useless
-
Does anyone know if the Corei7 model has the better cooling vent design? (The 5 vent rows vs. 4) Looking forward to the heat results, since the fan has less components to cool now.

Yeah it's no bad, could be better, but it's better than notebook check's "high" rating for the video card, which says good things.
Also, anyone else wonder why the memory on the video card is 800 Mhz? If it is GDDR3 shouldn't it be faster (I know it's the base clock for card)? Or just underclocked for heat reasons? I'm assuming it could probably overclock decently, though taking a heating hit. -
Core Temp 0.99.5

See how high it goes... Shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes to hit a high. -
So far I've been on the phone with dell for 1 1/2 hours tonight, and I've been transferred 16 times and disconnected 4 times.
The rep im on the phone with now isn't showing much promise... -

Under full load, temp is under 80 and the fan is not running loud
