Had a similar experience, when i recieved my replacement 1645 the screen was marked up and scratched from day one, I asked if they could replace the plastic cover over the LCD that was scratched...nope they replaced the entire top assembly of the laptop.

    Hey Guys,

Hopefully my XPS 1645 system will be delivered next week (EDD of 6/17), though it still says in production. When it arrives what things should I install or uninstall and just what exactly should I do for the machine before I really start using it?

Just ordered a 1645 yesterday. Since I don't have a copy of windows 7, and as far as I know dell doesnt ship one with it, when I receive the system, whats the best way to approach dealing with all the bloatware?

Mine is great! Normally I would be begging for a clean install, but actually removing the bloatware and doing some tweaking I have a decently running laptop. I idle in the high 30s low 40s for processes after a restart and it actually runs quite well for being factory installed. I will be doing a clean install though, just when i get the time to do so.

There are like a 100 threads regarding throttling issues and I can't really get a hang of this. Is this issue fixed now? Could I purchase a XPS and feel safe? (here in sweden the only xps offered is the one with HD 4670). If I do order it, is there a higher risk of throttling issues if I order it with the 820QM instead of 720QM?

My brand new xps 1645 does not throttle during gaming and in fact runs pretty cool for how thin it is. Here is a HWINFO32 I took last night while gaming and doing some light multitasking.

wow, that looks really good! You run it with a 130W adapter I suppose?

While I'm at it, how exactly do I know what version of the XPS I'm ordering? 1645, 1647 and so on. 16 is screen size I quess but what does 45 and 47 stand for?

The 1645's seem to be coming with a 130w AC adapter now. You can tell which one you're getting by the CPU. 1645 has a quad, and the 1647 has a dual core. GPU is based on the country you're ordering from.

My 1645 (see sig) has never had throttling issues. I bought it in early April. Not sure if there was some magic fix that has happened at some point, but I'd definitely recommend this laptop to other people.

Ofcourse, it would be wise to take this advice carefully, as I am but one data-point out of hundreds.

Not sure if you can get one of the newer GPUs (5000 series), but I'm sure that would also help. Still, I am running the 4670.

Vent is still the same, gets a little hot over in that corner by the screen but no issues with the LCD so far. Everything seems to be the exact same as it always has been.

You may have the 130w AC adapter and I also see you have the WLED and not the RGB.

Yup, I definitely have the 130w AC adapter, which hopefully all 1645 owners have by now. It should probably be noted that I can force my laptop to throttle if I run prime95 and Furmark, but so far gaming has not caused any issues. The new bios is a little troubling though, as it seems to make the laptop run hotter than before. Will be interested to see what the next bios revision does :p

mine throttles only while playing battlefield bad company. I just want to throw it out the window. Maybe getting the 1647 would be better to have a cooler running laptop and more battery life.

Or you could request a newer 1645 with a 5730 and 130w AC adapter so it doesn't throttle. Bigger AC adapter plus 9 less watts for the GPU makes having a quad core very nice and very doable.

Today I wanted to install navigational software straight to SD card for my PNA. So I inserted blank (fortmatted) 4GB Kingston SDHC card into the SD card reader in my SXPS, but the option of my navi software to install the software on SD card was disabled. Finally I did it on my desktop PC with a card reader.

I did such install several times on my previous M1330, but was unable to do this on my new SXPS.
I can copy, move, delete, format etc SD card, but I'm unable to install anything.
I have Ricoh/Memory card Reader version 2.11.01.02 drivers installed.
    Did anyone have similar problems?

Today Dell Sweden changed the graphic card included with the xps to a card called: ATI® Radeon™ HD 565v graphics

Anyone know anything about this card?

Edit: Lol seems to be the same card as the 4670, way to go Dell...

I got my XPS 1645 yesterday: i7 720 with ATI 5730. I've been reading this thread and others too about the heat issue(s). It's definitely still there. The LCD panel blocks the exhaust fan, making the bottom left corner of the LCD to be quite warm. The left hand-rest is also warmer than the right one.

The 1080 WLED LCD displays nice colors.
I set the brightness at about 30%, it's blinding bright at 100%!

I was planning to replace the thermal paste with AS5, but to my surprise,
the idle temp is already pretty low, comparable to what others got after
replacing their thermal paste: CPU: 45-49C, GPU: 49C.
I've not tried running games yet.

What software are you guys using to monitor you cpu temps etc?

I used RMClock on my C2D, but it doesn't support i7 processors does it?

I just want something to sit in the system tray and show me temps....shwoing i7 turbo state would be handy too.

    Thanks.

Would it be crazy to get the 820QM instead of 720QM considering the heat? I really need quad considering I will use the laptop for maya/rendering/after effects/photoshop/nuke (no gaming whatsoever). Dell is offering a discount for the 820QM making it just a few bucks more expensive than the 720QM but I'm afraid I will melt the thing :p

I really don't mind if it gets warm, I'm more afraid that the heat will damage it internally. However, I assume that in cases like that I can just get a new with my warranty

Newb here. Can anyone tell me why YouTube videos play beautifully on 480p and 720p but not 360p on my new 1645? On 360p setting playback is choppy with much distortion. Figured it would be the other way around, if anything. FWIW, it's set to high performance and am using the HD 4670.

I see whats the real problem here. You are using a 6-Cell Battery that completely blocks the bottom ventilation. 9-Cell battery would give you better airflow. Also open the Vent cover and clean the Heatsink grill and the cover itself.

    Hi all,

I'm a previous xps 1645 owner and returned it due to the problems and the BAD dell service.

Unfortunately, this laptop is absolutely fantastic for its price and actually has the most features which means I'm going to have to endure the DELL service. Compare that to HP and Toshiba who can't even provide a 1080p screen in their 15" laptops... SO SILLY!

Anyway... long story short... I'm having to take the leap of faith again (knowing I'm going to have problems). So I'm buying my 1645 second hand from a local auction here in New Zealand.

Option 1 (NZD $3220 with Warranty but only 4GB ram): Dell Studio XPS 1645 Core i7 - Mobile Insanity! for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand

Option 2 (NZD $2900 without Warranty but with 8GB ram): Dell Studio XPS 16 i7 Quad/8GB RAM/SSD/1 GB ATi for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand

Option 3: Buy new from dell with a 10% student discount on 1645

Option 4: Do not buy! save up for alienware or buy a lower spec'd alienware m15x.

What do you guys recommend? any one have any information about the problems I'm going to face or how to avoid or fix them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, the i7-720 (2 x 2GB 1333 ram) seemed to be running very slow in my last 1645 compared to my friend's alienware m15x with the exact same specifications. And not in games, but basic tasks like word and internet. His laptop ran great from day 1 while mine always had problems. Anyone know why and whether I will face the same problems with this secondhand higher spec model 1645?

    Thanks in advance!

Where in NZ do you live? I'm thinking of selling mine as im going overseas. Still has 6 months warranty left, but warranty is stupid in NZ anyways as its all covered by the consumer garantees act.

I live in Manukau, Auckland. What would you want for it? Lol tru about the consumer guarantees act, but try convincing someone sitting in malaysia to give you a replacement based on that! Esp. cause they're DELL.

always go for the max warranty, it is a dell so you know it will always have something wrong, unfortunately this is just a fact now.

without a warranty, the pain in the tech support will be something you wish you had.

4 gigs is plenty imho, i have 8 and don't notice any real difference

if you do save up and get an aw, it is just a dell too, so you would be in the same boat.

all that said, i am pretty happy with my 1645, it is nice, and i have minimal issues. my heat is no where near as bad as my previous 1730, 1710 or 170. and it games very well, surprising well to tell the truth... i am happy, it has been 6 months and it hasn't melted yet. no throttling issues whatsoever, and although i don't game as much as i used to, it will keep me happy with some 6-8 hour sessions every once and a while.

i completely agree about the best out there for the money, i have looked and ever comparable manufacturer has similar customer support and hardware failure issues, so i will just be happy, for now...

In New Zealand extended warranties are a pointless waste of money.
We have whats called the Consumers Garantee Act., which covers consumers for a "reasonable period" of time, and when you are buying a NZ$3000+ laptop it is reasonable to expect that it would last 3 years. Most companies actually shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to offering extended warranties, eg by Dell offering a 3 year extended warranty they are saying themselves that they expect the XPS 16 to last this 3 years.
Another way to look at it is, why should paying more money for the same product make it last longer...?

Do you know anything about Bios A10 ?

Yesterday my new Studio xps 16 came, and while i was searching dell site for updates, i found for a moment bios A10.

After a few minutes bios A10 dissapeared.

What i should do? Keep tha A10 bios or return to A09?
