HDD Indicator. It goes on and off when your Hard Drive is doing stuff, and depending on software, may flash due to the presence of a DVD Drive.

Yes, the bluetooth light is always there, even if you don't have it. It will only be lit if you actually have it, and it's active.

I finally received my 1645!!!! yayyyyyyyyyy

    so far:
-I don't see any difference between 900p and 1080p (i'm a noob at graphic stuffs)
-quadcore i7 7200 is VERY nice, performance is great and smooth, turboboost is awesome feature
-This system is quite hot if not on a cooler. I have a zalman2000 bought for my previous 1640...and the temperature is kept under control...with CPU constantly varies from 50-57 degree celcius. Im going to say the hottest the system overall got was about 65 degrees C.
-The ATI 5730 handles games pretty well (I tried Red alert 3) and set on high...I got good quality gaming experience and FPS is great. I gotta say it is a better card than the 4670 in terms of heat and performance.
-the 9cell is a bit bulky but helps the overall temperature fairly well
-the 130w adapter is a BRICK lol...but it doesnt get as hot as the 90w

    my specs: Dell studio XPS 1645 | Intel core i7 7200QM 1.6Ghz (2.8Ghz turbo boost) | ATI 5730 | 15.6" WLED 900p | 500GB 7200RPM | 4GB 1333Mhz RAM

i have to agree with everyone that the placement of the vent is retarded. i am actually worried about the left corner of the monitor getting damaged from heat over time instead of the processor.

I've been running mafia 2 for last 45 minutes and the temperature is hovering around 60 celesus

hey dude above. I think we got the identical system!

I just installed adobe master suite cs5 on the laptop (there's like 10 programs in it). installation took a while... but overall performance is very decent. Now the real test is maya.

I just received my XPS 1645 from the Outlet with the following specs:
    Dell Studio XPS 1645
    i7 720qm
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3
    ATi 5730
    900p WLED
    500GB 7200RPM
    9-cell 85Whr Lithium Ion battery
    --------------------
    $787.17 (Shipping and Taxes)

I currently have a Dell Studio 1737 (17 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ Laptop Screen with TrueLife) and comparing the two. I'm still not sold that the LCD on the 1645 is better than the LCD on the 1737. After reading the many compliments on the 15.6 1920x1080, I wonder if I'll have buyer's remorse? But I have to say, I'm impressed with the look and feel of the 1645 and should I be complaining about the LCD with the price I was able to get from the Outlet.

i do have some issue with the wireless tho

    1) when I boot up the laptop at home without the cable plugged in. it automatically connects to wireless
    2) I plug in the cable, i get wired internet
    3) I unplug the cable, i can't connect to my router no matter what, i think it was like that too when I close to lid and put it to sleep
    4) all is good after i restart the laptop WITHOUT cable. I can use wireless again

again, not a big deal yet. But I do find it weird and I am sure it'll give me some hassle in the future.

    It's $787 USD. $909 - 20% coupon (G33V36FJ4W63CL).

That's why I wondering if for that price, I should not be complaining about the 4GB ram, no 1920x1080 and be satisfited that I got a great price for a great notebook.

FYI: The 1745 would show up and then disappear by the time I could enter the captcha. I got frustrated, called Dell at 1-888-518-3355 and told them about my problem and the price. The rep configured the system and 3 days later, it arrived. My only "mistake" was not requesting the 1920x1080 LCD.

that's insane... i guess that's how the US outlet works. The listed price on dell website is $1044 and that's the lowest specc possible with the i5 processor.

If I knew there's such a thing I woulda drove down there to whereever and got the thing for that price myself.

Btw, I've never heard of a 20% discount coupon on such a big purchase. congrats

Believe it or not, but the US Outlet has had:
25% off Inspiron and 20% off other laptops in the past two weeks
    Fall Savings promo | Dell

The 20% showed up again this week and after lurking for several months, I finally pulled the trigger on the 1645.

FYI: I would recommend checking this site, and the Dell Outlet twitter page before purchasing anything from the outlet

What a mess on US Dell site atm. The 1645 no longer includes the FHD screen as an option and no more bluray. The worst of all is the price is higher than ever.

Outlet = used BTW, that, plus a 20% off coupon is why it's so cheap. New 1645s are crazy expensive for some reason right now. I paid $1160 for mine new, and the same configured machine is now running a bit over $1600 new.

I guess I finally pulled the last straw out of the hat. I tried fixing the already problematic bluetooth driver. It didn't uninstall well so I thought a computer restart ought to fix the prob. Next thing I know, my lappt couldn't startup. The pc repair thing popped up but it couldn't detect and problems and my pc restarts after that. It tried booting up in safe mode but to no avail. I tried to restore back to a previous restore point and there was NONE ( which I thought was very weird coz usually restore points will be made automatically once in a while, right?). The same thing with image restore. I popped in the bundled win7 disc. I looked at the drives and I was VERY shocked to see that my C drive has been wipe, or so it says. 450gb and 430gb free space. I did not do any formatting before this.

Is there a way to recover my OS? The only solution I can think of now would be to boot a live linu retrieve my files (assuming what I saw previously was wrong) and then do a fresh format.

Regarding the formatting, it is to my knowledge that all laptops have a hidden partition which let's you restore back to factory settings, right? I saw a 40gb partition when I inserted the win7 disc.

Please help me here guys. Since day 1 of buying this lappy, I feel really cheated to have had so many problems. If you search my posts, then you'll know how many problems have I encountered. :(

can anyone explain to me how the network cards in the laptop works?

there's always 3 connection assuming I installed all the driver.

    1) boardcom netlink gigabit ethernet (connected when I plug in cable)
    2) boardcom virtual wireless adapter (NEVER connected this one puzzles me, what is it for??)
    3) DW1501 Wireless (connects SOMETIMES... i am having some trouble with it for now)

anyone shed any insight on if I do doing somethign wrong? my wireless adapter sometimes don't even detect my wireless router (Dlink DIR-655) after i unplug the cable.

just the other day, i hit about 20% battery remaining, and now my HWMonitor is also showing 6% battery wear. funny thing is, i can guarantee you that i had 0% battery wear all the way up until that very moment i hit 20% battery.

is this some sort of bug or feature within HWMonitor to indicate battery wear when you hit a certain battery life point? because once i charged my battery back up to 100%, or if i've removed/re-inserted my battery, the battery wear drops back to 0%. a little concerning if you ask me, since it doesn't appear to be entirely accurate?

Once again, I'll post my questions. Is there any way I can re-program the hibernate button (alt+f1) to turn off the screen instead of hibernating? I rarely use hibernation and if I do, it'll be through the start menu.
Secondly, I re-installed Windows 7 on my laptop a while back. How do I take advantage of the 15GB backup partition Dell created by making a backup? What software should I use? Reformatting and resizing the partition, if needed, can easily be taken care of.

    @spike53,

i don't think there's a way to re-programin the Fn+key combinations, those are usually in some sort of firmware. though i may be wrong, as there might be a file in the QuickSet64 application/driver that you could modify, but i know nothing about that kind of stuff. if you want to turn your screen off, i'm assuming that you won't be using your computer at that point. if that is the case, why not set your "Close lid action" in your Windows Power Plan to "Do nothing". This will just turn off the screen (despite waht the description says) and prevent it from hibernating or sleeping.

If you want to get back the 15GB Dell partition, just use the Disk Management service in Windows to remove it. I'm assuming that you've already re-installed Windows, and so you won't be able to delete that partition. In this case, right-click on drive you want to delete, in Disk Management, and select "Delete Volume". Afterwards, right-click on the drive you want to expand, and select the option for it (I think it's called "Expand volume"?). that should let you re-size an existing partition to a larger one.

the most basic hard disk management features are now built into Windows 7. my instructions may be way off base, but a good Google search ought to fix taht for you :)

@chdaniel, the same instructions can go for you, changing the Power Plan setting for closing the lid. That will keep your machine on, but the screen off.

Go to Control Panel, Power options, change advanced options. Scroll down to 'action taken on lid close' or something like that, and change the option to 'nothing'. Now you can close the lid/shut off the monitor, while the laptop continues to download.

    @chdaniel,

i left you a post in another thread, telling you how to turn off the screen. go into "Power Options" in Windows, and click on the "Change what closing the lid does". change it to "do nothing". this will turn off your LCD panel, but will not sleep or hibernate.

the only thing you have to do is close your lid at night. it will also help with the temps a bit :)

thanks guys :D most helpful forum I've been on to.

btw, I've been playing fallout new vegas last couple of days for extended period of time.

I'm running on High, 900x1080 resolution (not 720) 14 sampling and 4x anti aliasing with HDR on. so far, it has run very very smooth without lag what so ever. and the temperature has never gone above 65.

crazy, i'm also playing New Vegas at 1920*1080, but i'm getting microstutters throughout the game. i am also using seeker_moc's modded BIOS with the higher GPU clock speeds.

my settings are the pre-configured "High" with no AA and no sampling, and no HDR or Bloom. i get microstutters everywhere, even after i've tweaked the game for better multi-core handling (in the Fallout.ini file). i usually get somewhere between 20-30 fps for most areas (indoors are higher) but i suffer from lots of stuttering in open places. how about you?

my temperatures are usually 65-70C max GPU, 50-55C max CPU (lid closed, with cooler).

just after i typed that. the game crashed on me a couple times. so i turned the sampling down to 5 and it didn't crash again. it has been so buggy, the game itself.

anybody else having trouble installing the new 10.10 ATI driver found here?

basically, i can install it, but then i am never able to open up the CCC panel. even the EXE doesn't appear in my task manager.

for now i've reverted back to 10.7, provided by Dell.

Strange, it works fine for me. There were some pretty significant changes in 10.10 (and even more on the way in 10.11) so I'd highly recommend installing it. Try uninstalling your current drivers first, then installing the new ones.

i did. the way i install my drivers is through the CLI, going straight to the dell\drivers\R257...\Support\10.7.......\Bin64\setup.exe -uninstall

and then running the 10.10 installer, which crashes while loading the installer application (due to the C++ redistribution), so i manually install the drivers via CLI. this has worked for me flawlessly with 10.7 and 10.8.

did you download the 70MB CCC only, or the 1MB "full" installer? maybe i got the wrong one?

    thanks!

I want to add that as soon as I got my PC I installed the ATi software. I just went through Windows Change or Remove Programs menu and clicked uninstall on the dell graphics driver. I went to AMD's site and downloaded their most current, full driver suite and it installed flawlessly. I have upgrading it since 10.7 and I've never needed to install it using any other means but through the .exe installer.

Ugh, had hinge problems so they replaced the lcd assembly. Now I'm getting temperatures 12C higher than usual, and thermal throttling when gaming.

i installed the driver and restart the laptop. but in the driver tab of graphic card in deice manager, it still says 8.692.1.0, and driver date 1/22

i think there's some conflict with the 945 screen.

    A doubt!!!

What's wrong if u install the ATI 10.10 over the 10.9, or if you uninstall the older one and then install the new one is there actually a difference????

far as i can tell, there shouldn't be any?

ever since installing 10.10 over 10.7 i've not had any problems at least. i don't really play enough games to tell you if there are any major performance boosts.

any chance you can upgrade it to complete care THEN have them replace it at this point?

Oh btw guys, my shaggymac came in thru the mail today. i dunno how to feel about it. I mean i like it and it look slick and well made, and it feels like such a luxury to have a $20 piece of cloth. but, on the other hand, it's still just a cloth.
