I just had my hard drive replaced and I noticed the login screen on this is a very dark blue background as opposed to the traditional windows 7 light blue screen. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Where can I find this and how do I change it from the traditional windows 7 screen. I want to do it to my desktop.

    Edit: Nvm found it

This is off topic but anyway, you can override the login background in C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds folder. The filename should be backgroundDefault.jpg & the size must less than 256KB.

I know this will probably be a silly question but i sorta miss it.

The LED in the adapter is not working anymore, so will they ship a new adapter if i say that the light is not working anymore????? :D

Just curious and i really want that light, it was very useful....

Only one way to find out? Just say the adapter isn't working anymore. And when they ask you why you think that - say the light isn't working ;-)

The lights for the media keys, volume and eject keys died yesterday. The lights on the keyboard and the power button are still working. Anyone else have similar issues?

Hmm, I haven't had an issue with that yet. I don't know exactly what controls those lights, but I wonder if there is a way to diagnose if this is software related or hardware related. I'm guessing hardware problem, but that's only a guess based on the fact that I don't know of any software that controls those particular lights, and they do their little "glow brighter when pressed" thing regardless of everything else.

Is it possible to add the leather accent on the lid after purchase? I can see the gap separating that section form the rest of the frame but i don't see how it can be removed.

If not, has anyone added decals or did something unique with that area?

Is anyone having any luck with the speedfan beta version which lists Dell? I can get it running (as long as I reboot after install) but it spits out all these errors about reading values (this is either with Dell option tick or not).

Some of the other models here seem to have it running ok..

Hey I have a question to those with an XPS 1645. Do any of your laptop's media keys seem to ignore input after long use? I find that after using MS Word that the media keys stop functioning even though when I touch them, they brighten up then dim like normal. Also, do you find that after waking up the laptop from sleep mode, that the inner bluetooth transmitter doesn't work. I find that both of these problems require a restart to fix. Also, do you ever have the problem where the volume suddenly mutes but if you adjust the volume using the keys in front of the screen, the sound comes back but then mutes out in about 30 seconds later?
If anyone has input on these problems I would love to hear it!

Yes, same issue with my dvd eject key. Never use bluetooth to notice similar issue but no issue with volume. At times my function volume up and function screen brightness stop working. I have to remove the battery and unplug to reset everthing back to life in this case.

Got my XPS 1647 in Nov last yr.

    There's 3 output for video.
1st is VGA, 2nd is DisplayPort & 3rd is HDMI.

I connected the HDMI-HDMI cable to my 1st external monitor. Works fine.

    I tried 2 other cables.
    1) DisplayPort-DVI adaptor . Then DVI-DVI cable to a 2nd different external monitor. Didn't work. I have to choose between moniotr #1 & 2 apart from the main notebook display.

    2) VGA - VGA cable with monitor #2. Didn't work either.

I would no choice but to go the only way of either
    1) buying a external USB to DVI/HDMI adaptor
OR 2) Connect multiple DualHead2Go or TripleHead2Go Graphics eXpansion Modules - Graphics eXpansion Module

Has anyone tried going to ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver to upgrade the driver of ATI Radeon HD 5730 / or another type

to v11 to enable EyeFinity on a mobile GPU ?

My purpose is to achieve connecting 2 external monitors to the notebook (making it total of 3 displays) with EyeFinity software multi-display (independent) without resorting to external 3rd party solutions.

    The current version:
    Driver Packaging Version 8.692.1-100122a-094670C-Dell

Do the WWAN cards have SIM card spaces in them or is there somewhere in my 1645 that I can put it?

Also, has anyone taken out their DVD drive and replaced it with a second disk?

I'm *tempted* to get a hybrid system drive and a TB secondary drive so I can do some recording on it...

I think the issue was using the VGA and displayport at the same time? I dont have a display port adapter so I cant try that.

Just for the record (to answer my own question above), I found the sim-card slot behind the battery :)

Studio XPS 1645 here and no trouble until I plugged in a laptop cooler into one of the two USB ports and now both ports won't work. Laptop cooler is all good as is the mouse.

I rebooted and also rebooted after taking out the battery to reset which helped other crap in the past.

USB ports look all good in the devise manager, fyi.

    Any ideas?

There was a big thread about something that I think might be related to your powershare problems a month or two back. Basically, there is some flaw in the bios (or somewhere else in the laptop) that causes the many of the bios settings to reset their values after some unknown condition is met (though it was reproducible, the exact cause was not determined). So if you go to the bios setting (hit F2 when you reboot), I suspect you might find that powershare is disabled.

Ofcourse the problem you are experiencing might be completely unrelated to this, but this is my guess :D

I did update to the latest bios...still its showing the same error....and earlier it was stuck at 82% and then power went off...after that its stuck at 78%...
I just don't get it...and had it been a problem with the adapter then atleast other adapters should have worked...right???

Shut down the laptop, unplug from power adapter and remove the battery.

press the power button several times to be shure all power is out of the system then replace the battery and power supply and reboot.

see if that changes the recognition of the power supply?

It's obviously motherboard problem. You don't have any choice unless to call Dell & replace the motherboard again. Don't they check thoroughly when they replaced the motherboard?

I have a 130W US power supply and I will be traveling to the EU. My adapter reads that it works on EU 220V which is great because all I would need is an adapter to change the male plug from US to whatever EU plug I need.

My question is that the cord from the plug end to the adapter it has a white piece of label tape that says it is only rated for 120V 2.5A. This cord to the adapter is replaceable. Do I need to purchase one that is an EU style plug?

just a small question, this powershare feature, is it required that the device thats charging should be compatible with this feature or does the port just put out 5 VDC to anything that we plug in while the laptop is off.
what I exactly mean is I own a Motorokr E6, but, it doesn't charge when I turn off my laptop.. I don't understand whether this prob is with the laptop or the mobile..

You don't need a special device, powershare works with anything. That said, I think powershare is only active on the 1x USB/eSATA combo port, not the other regular USB ports. Also, make sure that 'powershare' is enabled in the BIOS.

@seeker_moc: yes, I was referring to the combo port. I got this doubt only because my powershare didn't work even after enabling it in BIOS.
@the_scotman: then it loos like I'm also a victim of this powershare feature failure..

Just replaced my DVD with the original 500GB HDD, been running a 160GB SSD for a while in the main HDD slot, and I really recommend that upgrade! The DVD now sit in a external USB case.

Bought both the sata-sata 12.7mm bay and the ext dvd case on ebay from china, took only 5 days shipping to Sweden, I was impressed!

So my display stopped working, everything else works, connect to an external monitor currently. Happened before and they replaced the screen. However this time I'm out of warranty. Anyone know the part number for FHD screen, preferably an RGB screen. I currently have a non-RGB FHD screen with the part number 3JT7X. However when I look online I see many different part numbers (0FD9Y, J934G, 1CJ45). I just want to make sure I'm getting the right part for the right price. Any suggestions?

Also if anyone else has any suggestions as what else might be wrong besides the display, please let me know.

Besides the LCD, the LCD inverter can be faulty too. LCD inverter is a small board which is responsible in LCD backlighting. You can google how to test LCD inverter. If I'm not mistaken, if you're going to change from non-RGB to RGB screen, you'll need to change the LCD inverter too. So, make sure you buy one with inverter included.
