Hey, welcome to the club ( http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19303822.aspx). Too bad those guys didn't stick around long enough to do any trouble shooting with me.
But anyway, how much RAM do you have? They gave me a 4+2 hynix/samsung mix which worrys me (I don't care if Dell say's it should work, I just don't trust mixed memory).
When I have time I'm going to try a clean install of win7 instead of Dell's image. If that doesn't work I'll try the mobilty modded ATI drivers.
I hope you stick around to do some troubleshooting with me (dell tech support was useless for me). And I wouldn't just jump for a replacement machine quite yet because if you read the dell forum thread you'll see the other guy had the same problems after getting a replacement.

my system is an i7 720, 6 gigs of ram (haven't opened it to check what brand), 500gig HDD, 1080p WLED, DVD-R

hi guys I think that the dell technician was saying that the framerate changes were due to the heat of the Power supply and not the 1645 heat ! I will try to keep the Power supply cold to see if it changes anything !
I'll need some liguid nitrogen. Or I will try to putt it in the freezer wile using it

fwiw, I just checked using PC Wizard, and I have a 4 gig chip made by Hyundai and a 2 gig chip made by Elpida.

All your other scores seem to be good. -

Call me lucky; call me special...but I ordered my XPS 16 last Saturday morning and it arrived today (only 1 week total for production & shipping). Maybe Dell's production issues are resolved and machines will start to get to customers quicker. I've got the typical arrangement of i7; WLED screen; BlueRay; SSD; etc.. My 22" monitor and 130W power supply are on the truck and should show up on Monday as well. This by far is the quickest machine I've owned only issue I've found so far is that my greasy finger prints get on everything. Beautiful beast!

The Dell site is now showing no delays for any parts.
Yesterday it was showing 2 day delays for 4670, 256GB SSD, and the 5300 IIRC. -
The backlight on the keyboard stays lit for 60 seconds. Is there any way to increase that time?

Keep typing or using the touchpad -

When I placed my order on the 4th.
When you click on the red or blue (can't remember) ESD link on the right (while you are configuring on Dell's site) it brings up build time and part delays, if there are any. -

Folks,
I am looking into ordering a XPS Studio 16 w/ i7 in the next couple of days. I haven't read this entire thread. I am wondering if someone can help with the following:
* I've gone thru the customization wizard, and on the summary page, the LAN adapter is listed as 10/100. Is this just a mistake? I would expect this to support gigabit lan.
* Can anyone post a link to the power adapter I need to order to avoid the throttling issue when plugged in?
* Are there any coupon codes or known way to get a discount on this system?
Thanks for the help. -
No coupons out right now. The 20% off upgrades is the cheapest way (even cheaper than my 21% Boeing EPP discount).
The power adapter doesn't solve all the issues, but the 130W is what you want. -
the throttling issue power adapter fix is still theoretical, could be solved with a bios update? also, some say the 130 solved all problems but others still have issues. i suggest waiting until things are actually figured out. i myself had an extra pa13 laying around and use it exclusively at home. i get no throttling but have not put it through the paces too much yet so i don't know if it makes a diffrence?
-
Thanks. I am thinking of ordering the 130w anyway but don't know where. Can't find it in Dell's website

Yes. 20% Bing cashback. Read the earlier posts on how to do it. I did and got $575 back. -
I just tried the Bing and it is now 5%.
Unless I read the post wrong -

Hi folks,
New to this forum. Just ordered a 1645 to replace an older 1720. I missed out on the BCB 20% discount, so I went through AAFEES (I'm retired military) and ordered one for $1598.00, no tax, and shipped, with the following specs:
Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor @ 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
Memory: 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP
ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB
500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Arctic White High Gloss Finish with Leather
Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit
Integrated 10/100 Network Card
8X Slot Load CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi MB
Intel® 5300 WLAN Wireless-N (3x3) Mini Card
Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007
McAfee SecurityCenter, 15-Months
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
1 Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service
1Yr LoJack for Laptops Theft Protection
Dell Online Backup 2GB for 1 year
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR)
I may upgrade to a Blueray burner eventually, as well as bump the RAM to 8GB, and perhaps add a a solid state drive. Time will tell.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi. This thread has loads of great info in it.

Can I upgrade my laptop with an internal TV Tuner?

Just so we are clear on Normal Computing: (Below is a list of things I used this computer for.)
1. Watching movies
2. Playing Music
3. Using Microsoft Office
4. Surfing the Internet
5. Emailing
6. Downloading/Uploading music/photos/movies
This is what I use it for, and it all has worked just fine without issues. -
-
damn thing wouldn't start again this morning at first...

I have 6GB of memory and haven't had any of the lock-up problems a few of you have had. The first thing I did when I got my laptop was swap out the hard drive with an SSD I already had. Then I transferred my Windows 7 Professional license from my old laptop to this one and did a clean install. I think the only Dell drivers/software I'm using are bluetooth, webcam central, and the dell dock. I'm also using the 9.11 catalyst drivers with mobility modder.
I hope that helps you figure out why you're having issues. I don't think it's the mismatched memory. -

@nick29:
How to log temperatures with Real Temp:
1. Open Real Temp
2. Settings
3. Log file (seconds)
Should save it to the directory where Real Temp is. -
thanks. What's the difference between Realtemp and Realtemp GT?
fwiw, it hasn't frozen since Friday, which is the longest it's gone so far
I should probably add that I'm using a no name notebook cooler that I got from monoprice.com. It seems to bring the core temps down from high 50s to low 50s and the case never gets to a level that I'd call "hot."
