Damn...there's something very wrong with my WEI for my X-25M. I mean, it's blazing fast, but I get a 6.1...What's up with that?

Instead of using the WEi, use a benchmarking tool like crystaldiskmark and check it against reviews of the SSD you have at reputable sites like Legit Reviews.

Is it true that SSD performance degrades as the drive fills up? That was one of the reason I didn't upgrade. The TRIM command is supposed to fix this but I heard the support for it is hit-or-miss.

Some drives support TRIM and some don't. And yes, drives will slow down the more you use them. TRIM should assist with this.

Guys, when I want to do a clean install on my new 1645, do I use the os dvd from dell or..?
I assume the dvd won't reinstall all the 3rd party apps again right?

No it wont. You have to download the drivers & apps from DELL or better of goto the manufacturers website and get the latest from there.

Yes, I was referring to the application randomly shutting down when accessing flash applications or even web pages. I see it in both firefox and Internet Explorer. I'm currently disabling add-ons to see if its a specific add-on causing the problem other than the flash.

It's a nuisance at this point.

Just to clarify, I meant that the application (either firefox or IE) would shutdown saying that an error occur and need to be restarted. Not the system itself.

My wife's Inspiron has a Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini Card. Both systems are 64 bit. Both systems have Dells latest drivers. Her system has a Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 and my system has a I7. I have webcam and she doesn't.

I'm also trying turning off the add-ons to see if something is inconsistent between the add-ons.

    Hello All,
i had have two little problem with the XPS1645.
One time my screen went all blue, it worked just fine but only with a blueish
screen and another time exactly the same the screen turned completely pink.
Also this time i could keep on working on the machine with the pink screen,
but it gives a hell of a headache after a while :D
The first time after a new startup everything was fine, the second time
i had to take the battery of, it kept pink after a few startups.

Someone any clues what the problem could be?

I just got my unit today. I ordered for RGBLED and as said in the first post of this thread, the invoice didn't say anything about my RGBLED order.
Where can I actually check for the LCD part number to determine whether it is RGBLED?

Do any of you use an application to monitor the speed of the system fan? SpeedFan and HWMonitor don't appear to detect its presence.

Trying to configure mine on dell.com. There is now no Blu-ray drive available, 6 GB DDR 1333 MHZ Ram is the minimum, & RGBLED is now the only option, & comes with the 500GB Drive minimum for a starting price $2023.00 - after instant discount it's $1645.00. Still can't find any promo codes on Bing or elsewhere... Any advise?

Is there any way that I can help with FastAccess (the facial recognition)? If there's a specific reason that you find it annoying, then perhaps I can suggest alternative configurations to help it meet your specific needs. I personally find it quite helpful (especially the web login feature) and would be happy to do what I can to assist.

When you do a shutdown or a restart of the computer, why does it temporarily disable fastaccess? It states that the computer was manually shutdown or locked. When the computer boots up, I would think it should do the facial recognition and boot up. Am I missing something?

The main reason I find it annoying is because it hardly ever recognizes my face. I use my laptop in different positions and different angles (sittting, laying down, standing up) and I wear different sets of glasses where one set is larger and shaped different than the other. I would say the software recognized my face probably 1 in 10 logins. And if I don't put my face in front of the camera and log in it gripes about needing my face every time I log in.

To me this just goes along with the fingerprint login, I don't need it. I use this laptop for work as a desktop replacement. I work from home and travel to the office about once a month, so my laptop goes with me as a desktop replacement. I don't need the "added security" that this adds.

I'm really not trying to come off as cynical here, I would be curious to know why you find it quite helpful.

I'm planning to do a clean install on my 1645. I have some questions to ask.

    1. After doing clean installing, do need to download all essential drivers one by one? Can you give me the lists of important driver i have to install no matter what? From Dell or Manufacture?

    2. About the power issue, If i update Bios to the newest version and buy a 130w charger, ?Can it solve the issue?

    3. Can you guys give me the links buying a slim 130w charger compatible with Dell 1645 (dont mind how much) ?

4, If i want some applications from Dell (facial recognition and the Dell Webcam software), Should i install them using the CD coming with my laptop or download from Dell individually?

I know there are answers on this topic, but I cannot afford to read all posts from the beginning . Thanks much

Ok, what I'm seeing is that IE locks up and stops responding. I can either shut it down (which brings up a message that IE has become unresponsive), or if I wait about 15 minutes it will come back. This has been going on for two months now and I'm really loosing my patience that a laptop that costs this much should have such a fundamental problem that makes it aggravating to use.

    @tigereat

First off, no need to double-post. Your question belongs in THIS thread, not the AC Power Throttle one.

    1. Yes, you need to download the drivers. List: wireless and wired network, chipset, GPU, sound, card reader, webcam, IR receiver, QuickSet. Think that is it. All of these minus the network card can be found on Dell's site. For the network card, hit up Intel's site.

    2. You also need ThrottleStop, which links can be found in the last few pages of the AC Power Throttle thread.

    3. Eh.....not sure. Try searching the AC Power Throttle thread? Or just ask in there.

    4. I think some programs have to be downloaded from My Dell Downloads, like the Facial Recognition. I mean, if yours came on a CD, that's great, but I think for most users they have to go online.

    @ebcole

You can turn down the sensitivity so it doesn't require such a perfect match every time.

    @lowlands

Someone said that happened and they had to get their screen replaced?

    @kiseki

    320-8335
    320-8341
    320-8332

If any of these match, you have the RGB.

The RGB screen is slightly bigger, so there're no black strips between screen and hinge.

Meh, my results compare perfectly to those of other people running the 02HD firmware (enables TRIM). I just wish Windows would recognize that.

EDIT: What the hell? I just ran it again and got a 7.7 for my SSD. I'll take it!

I'm praying that I don't have freezing and lock up issues. I'm planning to update ATI drivers and uninstall any unnecessary Dell software.

The ATI drivers should help. I updated my son's new Studio 15 with modded ATI drivers and the system's 3dmark06 score went up by over 20%. I plan to do the same thing when my SXPS arrives, hopefully later this week.

When my brightness is at the lowest using Fn (down) I get 8 off colored, usually yellow, blobs. They are evenly spaced and they look somewhat like a glow. I noticed this for the first time this morning. I watched a couple movies last night. No drops, no damage, RGBLED. I've had this computer since Friday so its only been 3 days. Anyone know what this is? Is it something that can be fixed? Is it something that can get worse? (i.e. it shows up on highest brightness also rather than only lowest)

Only worried because I just got this thing!

Edit: Forgot to mention they are always in the same location, at the bottom of the screen.

wow, mine does that too, but to me.. thats freaking awesome. Thats acutally very handy for me, so thanks. Now... just a few questions. right now i have the 1640 xps 16, with the following specs

    Dell Studio XPS 1640
    Intel Core 2 Duo T9550(2.66GHz/1066Mhz FSB/6M L2 Cache)
Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish with Leather accents
    4GB, DDR3, 1067 MHz 2 Dimm
    16.0” 16:9 1080p FullHD RGBLED LCD
    ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4670 - 1GB
    500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit
4X Slot Load Bluray (BDRW) Rewritable Drive (BD Read and and Write)
    Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi MB
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion P Primary Battery

I do quite a bit of After Effects work, and some 3d in cinema 4d. Not much of a gamer, but lots of photoshop, AE, cinema4d etc. Im thinking about upgrading the the i7 quad core, with 8gb ram. Could some of you smart people maybe give me your take on weather that would provide a significant increase in performace over my current system? im somewhat of a newbie, so does the quad core really offer more performace even with the lower 1.7ghz ver the Core2duo at like 2.6 ghz??? Would love to hear a few differnt opinions of people who may have 1st hand experiance with some of these apps. Thanks a lot

p.s. My system is for sale at a SMOKING deal... but having a few people look at here locally, so may not last long.. fyi.. thanks!!

3 fingers on the touchpad is actually a feature. :)

I think 3-finger flick is also enabled on Dell's drivers? Go into Firefox and flick three fingers left and right. It should be Back/Forward on the browser buttons.

Anyways, if you download Synaptic's drivers, you'll find that you can customize these to do all kinds of stuff.

I am so jealous of your late firmware drive. This is the 256GB SSD from Dell? I have VBM19D1Q and it does not support TRIM. My Windows Experience Index for the drive is 7.2."

Mine is the 128 Gb. I only mentioned TRIM because I was starting to think that with 40GB taken by the initial install plus 40 taken by my re-install, plus usage my SSD might have already gone once through each cell and so it was now running slower. But with Trim apparently enabled, that shouldnt have been the issue.

Thanks for the link. I knew I remembered someone had a "everything you need" listing for a fresh install, but I could not find it for the life of me.

The adapter will run hot, not much you can do. Lower the maximum processor state in Power Options and that should reduce heat, albeit with the expected performance loss.

    1. FastAccess uses a very unique learning algorithm designed to improve recognition the more you use it. You are correct, however, that continually varying the circumstances of use will not produce as high a recognition percentage. The idea from my perspective, however, is that any recognitions are better than none because that's typing that I avoided.

    2. The "password override" warning message that you get when you log in without your face visible can easily be turned off. There's a "don't show this message again" checkbox in the pop-up window. With that message off, there should be no downside to keeping FastAccess running. Even if you're not recognized quickly you can always still log in manually just as you would have without it.

    3. Personally, I find the web login feature the most useful. Can other programs also remember web passwords? Of course! This is the only convenient way that I know of, however, to assure that only I have access to this most sensitive of information. Personally, I do value the extra security when it comes to my banking credentials, for example, even though I also primarily work at home.

    I hope this helps. :)

If by "temporarily disable" you actually being "temporarily suspended", then no, you're not. That message is correct is you do a logout or a manual lock (it's the system assuming that if you locked or logged out of the desktop that you WANT it to be locked or logged out so it deliberately delays even trying to log you back in to prevent an infinite loop), but with a restart I don't believe that you should see the "temporarily suspended" message with the orange border around the video.

Can you privately message me with some system details? I'd like to try to reproduce the issue. FastAccess version, OS version (including 64 vs 32 bit), and Dell model to start. Thanks.

    Hey guys,

I'm considering this over a Sony FW and was wondering:

    - How does heating compare to the XPS 1530? The XPS I have at least is quite hot under pressure how does this cope with gaming and media?
    - Is there any actually difference apart from the screen size between the 15.6 and 16 inch screens? £190 is alot for a small change.
    - Dell states there is a 10 day delay, is that before it is build or shipped? It stated my build is ready to be built which is weird!

To return to an earlier point re: SSDs and particularly for the attention of BuckZor.

I also had a WEI of 7.2 for the SSD on first boot. After that I reinstalled Windows 7 (I deleted the Dell Recovery and main partitions and then merged them via the W7 setup program, but did not reformat as I know that would unecessarily write to SSD blocks and decrease performance.)

Since the reinstall has completed however, I have only be able to obtain 6.3, which is not far above most hard disk drives. I have installed the Intel Chipset and the Matrix manager, to no avail.

Just wondering why my performance has dropped so dramatically, when I can't at that stage have been close to writing to every block on the SSD? Is there another issue at play?

    Cheers guys.

Uninstall the Matrix manager. It won't do anything for you on a single HDD, and will probably hurt performance.

My screen turns yellow briefly while I change brightnesses, but it then goes back to normal color.

Someone else who had this problem got their screen replaced and the problem disappeared?
