Good info in this thread. I'm looking forward to getting my SXPS's arriving. I talked to my Dell rep today and they confirmed that both the 1645 and the 1647 are coming with 90W adapters. Guess I'll see what actually arrives. Both of the machines have identical configs except for the processors. I'll post comparison tests once I have them.

Oh yeah, I'm a newbie here, great place for info.

and yeah i wanted to ask one more question... some of my important college data and projects and seminar presentations are in the old laptop HDD (without backup).. how do i recover it? so wen i get a new laptop can i ask dell to send rep to replace the new laptops' HDD with the old ones'?? or do you think there might be some damage to the old laptop HDD too?? (in which case how do i recover the data)??

I think people might be asking for trouble putting their systems under this kind of load. If you want to find out if your throttling or not simply boot up a fairly graphically intensive game (cysis is good) and while playing plug and unplug your 90W adpater. When it changes to battery power it will stop throtling and when your on AC it will....

Did you have the 130watt adapter when you did this? If you used the 90 watt you're lucky you didn't burn your house down.

I just took delivery of my SXPS 1645. I haven't had time to mess around with ThrottleStop yet (testing out the basics first) and I've run into an odd problem.

If I use Fn-Up and Fn-Down to adjust the screen brightness, I get the little pictogram on the screen with the "ball" going to the left and the right... but the brightness never actually changes. This is true whether the machine is on battery or AC power. I have the RGBLED screen, and have updated to BIOS A03 (it shipped with A01), but have not updated the video driver.

Any idea what's going on here?

I had that problem....I'm trying to remember what fixed it. Give me a moment to find the post: Dell wanted to replace the screen, but it fixed itself somehow.

Try opening and closing the screen a few times because I can't seem to find the post. It was in a topic dedicated to some other screen problem....try searching under my name.

Depends what you want... I love my laptop but I also don't game on it.

I have had no problems with my system yet. I did run futuremark with no issues, but I didn't do Prime 95 plus future mark, etc...

If you a looking for a good laptop that is fast and is also nice to use, then there is no downside to making a purchase. If you want to be confident that you can really tax the system and chew through games with no problem at the highest settings, and also know that your system can take full advantage of the CPU, then you may not be happy.

I considered returning my laptop and getting an Alienware, but there are sacrafices to Alienware. The Dell XPS 1645 is a comfortable system to use. Big keyboard, nice built in speakers, etc.

Like I said, it depends on what is important to you.

You can become obsessed with the fact that there is a throttling issue, even if the issue never impacts your actual performance or satisfaction with the system. If it bothers you and you are going to obsess with stress testing and benchmarks, then don't buy it.

    guys,

I need a favor. I just received my studio 1645. Strangely, it came with the old A01 bios.

Now for the favor, all our laptops have a serial number which can be found below the battery.. you'll find it by removing the battery. My serial starts with CN-.. ends with A00. I was wondering if that is normal or does anyone have a serial ending with a greater hardware/bios revision, like A01 , A03 etc..?

I am afraid that I might have received a user's returned system lol :S

    Please help! Thanks ! :D

Can't and it probably wouldn't if it could. Windows usually parks half the cores (parked = ?off?), anyways, and I have suspicion they're the HT ones.

I've been having problems with my rgb screen flickering when under 50% brightness. Got the screen changed for 2nd time and the motherboard changed today and still got the same problem. The engineer confirmed that he seen it still flickering.

I'm thinking of telling them to replace my sxps with just the standard 1080p screen but would like some feedback on how good that screen is?

I'll also be due a refund for the rgb screen but was thinking of asking for the 256gb ssd or upgrading to the i7-820. Has anyone got any experience of getting some upgrades if they have been having trouble with their machines? If so, whats the best way to go about getting them to throw these in?

    Thanks

Out of curiosity, anyone know whether it'd be possible to finagle a return outside of the 21-day period? Unfortunately I don't have an open case with Dell regarding the throttling issue...

While I'm overall happy with the purchase, I'm starting to get to a point where I'd rather take my money elsewhere to drive home a point.

It is. I've been in contact with them about the throttling issue (read: stalling so I have a laptop to use while I wait for my 1647). They've sent me a half dozen parts to swap out. Poor techs, they have no clue what's wrong. I've never had one BS me and tell me that they knew the issue, or some nonsense like that.

Well that's the thing.. I'm aware of the fact that you can manage a return if you've had an unresolved case from before your 21-day period ended. Unfortunately I received my system on 11/30 and never called Dell, so I imagine it's too late for me to do anything now...

If anything, it's my fault for placing my faith in Dell.

Actually, if you have at least 3 confirmed/repeated failures or problems on a system, they would probably give you a new one. but yea I don't think you can return it for cash otherwise.

I think if you complain enough now about it and about how it's ruining your enjoyment of the system, can't utilize it's full potential and threaten them with lawyers about not selling you what they stated etc, then you will probably get a return out of it.

I e-mailed [email protected] and got a call back from Dell corporate, he researched what I told him about throttling and got back to me stating there was a fix on the way, i said i'll be over the moon if they can fix the issue but if its not fixed in a few weeks I want a refund and he agreed. I was going on about how I loved the system and really didn't want to return it but with the throttling I was paying a premium for a not so premium system!

Since then i'm gonna have to return it because of the screen anyway.

All of this was outside the 21 day period!

I got my 1645 system two days ago. Need help. Although it is pretty cool, but it's fan is almost always running and the noise is annoying. The fan only slows down after long breaks of inactivity, but as soon as I do anything, even clicking a browser link, it kicks back in. It is noisy. I also have a 1640 system and the fan on that is virtually quiet. Help please!!!!!

    Ha,

I got that too when I had mine, there's probably a piece of Packing plastic (plastic bag like) stuck between the fan and the heat sink grills..

Remove the bottom plate then slide out the vent cover, then there's a piece of Black tape basically sealing the heat sink to the fan, remove that, and between that gap, I saw a piece of plastic bag left over from manufacturing that was blocking most of the vent when I removed that... bam.. the unit cooled down, fan started to run cooler, and quieter...

there are some breakdown instructions around the net you can probably find how to get to that heat sink area.

    good luck

yea I would think its an isolated issue, but its worth a look, who knows, maybe the same guy who assembled mine could have put your notebook together too.. and maybe he skipped out on removing the plastic..

All i can say is that after I removed it, the fan was really quiet even when the cpu was working hard.

Ah.....interesting. Maybe they changed the extension just so they could upload them to the forums?

Try changing them to *.icc or whatever the extension is and then try loading them. Warning: this might be bad, as they could really be text files, but it's an idea.

Why not try changing a known .icc file to a .txt file and compare the new file to the .txt file in question.
If they compare the same, then it would be safe to convert it to a .icc file.

All you have to do is remove the .txt extension from the file leaving the .icc as the final extension. and install it under color management profiles.

    Distracting fan noise:
I notice that the fan on my 1645 system is noticeably louder than that on my 1640-based system. On my 1645, it kicks into 'speed # 2' as soon as a I open a webpage or click on a link.......speed # 1 being the quietest. Many times it just kicks into speed#2 while idle. I have it on balanced + passive CPU cooling on power. on my 1640, it's usually on speed#1 unless doing something intensive.

    Here's what I have:
    1645: 720qm, 6GB, 4670, 500GB 7200RPM, RGB LED.
    1640: p8600, 4gb, 4670, 320GB 7200 RPM, RGB LED.

is anyone else experiencing the same issue? It's that the noise is kind of distracting in a quiet room. I have the original Dell install of windows 7, A03 bios. Any ideas/solution?
