Have you updated the graphics card driver?
Also if you are running on battery, Power play will have some limitation on the card, try disabling it while playing.

Just to bring my contribution :
After a lot of cancellations and reordering (about 3 or 4) and approximately 350min on the phone with incomprehensibles indian interlocutors (my whole cell plan), a sale representative has ordered for me a new order with a discount of 200$.
So, here is my order :
Order Date: 11/2/2009
Order Status:In Production
Estimated Delivery Date:12/10/2009
But the SR send me these emails about the EDD :

The system's configuration is :
I guess now I have to be patient and wait wisely

The above is what this thread is for ...
Oh ... and welcome! -
Excuse me if I made a mistake
-
Yeah of course. I don't think Dell has updated the drivers since this laptop was released though, and you can't get more recent drivers from ATI directly for laptop cards.
-
you can try to do some overclocking
-
Here's a few pics (I hope I did it right). I got it yesterday and had it on for 12 or so hours and it never got hot under normal use, web browsing, installing apps, etc. The fan is real quiet as well.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, I only see one. Can you include one just like the one you have posted, but with the screen in the normal viewing position? I would like to see the vent. That is good that it isn't getting too hot. Have you been keeping an eye on processor temps?
-
My mistake, the last one is with the lid open as in pic 3. I'm only on lunch break so I can't do too much right now.

Picture three looks like it covers the vent, but on picture four, it looks like there is a descent gap for the air to flow. It looks like the screen will still get some heat exhaust. Is that correct? Thanks for posting the pics.
-
Pics 3 & 4 are with the lid at the exact same position. I just had to take the 4th pic from underneath and I went to a different room with better lighting.
-
Looks like the top two slots of the exhaust vent blow into the screen and go up? Thanks for the pics. Maybe one more from the side and slightly above to see the clearance between the vent and the screen? They supposedly changed something with the base, but I don't know if that included the vent.
-
I think there is plenty of room for exhaust there. If you look at some notebooks with i7 they really dont have more vents then the xps does. It ought to be fine.
-
It isn't the size of the vent I'm concerned with. "Other" notebooks don't have a drop hinge that puts the screen right in front of the vent when it is open.
-
the vent wraps around the underside though. unless you are opening up the screen to a beyond-normal viewing angle it shouldn't cause any issues. The only problem my wife has on her 1340 is that the cooler pad we bought actually has an angled-up back end that blocks the airflow a little bit more.
-
Which cooler are you referring to? (I am considering the NC2000, so I am interested in any potential issues)
-
I don't expect this laptop to be supercool or have a long battery life. I just want to be make sure that it is not unreasonably hot and so far it seems great!
-
Can anyone confirm that the 1645's fan is "always-on", can it be turned off in the settings or not?. Also, would it be better to have the laptop with the 6-cell battery on the notebook cooler or does it not matter. I would imagine that 9-cell wouldn't work well with a cooler since it is raised.
-
It is impressive, here is HWmonitor for normal use and for 100%CPU Primo95 and 100% GPU Furmark use.

Nice work. Looks like GPU-z is a little confused about whats going on
Did you run this test for 15-20 minutes like the other one?
Room temps arn't sub zero or anything, right?
Is it on an external cooler or just your standard wooden desk?
+rep -
There is a passive mode in the windows 7 power profile settings, which should turn off the fan, but assume the BIOS will override and turn the fans on when needed.
Laptop coolers try to be universal, but they aren't so what cooler you use with which laptop will affect results. NC-2000 sucks cool air in from below its self and blows it up into the bottom of the laptop. This keeps hot air from collecting underneath and reduces intake temperature slightly. Raising the laptop allows more air to flow underneath, so with or without a cooler it should be slightly cooler raised up on the 6-cell. The affect is not going to be dramatic one way or the other. -
Awesome results. Can you state your computer specs too (Win7? And answering the above questions regarding ambient temp and setup). Thanks

Ahh no wonder. I thought sidebar was removed for Win 7... how did 80 deg C on your lap feel lol.
-
Correct, there is no transparent sidebar in Win 7 that gets in the way. But you can still put gadgets anywhere on the desktop in Win 7.

This sounds really weird, but I'm seeing a direct correlation between the performance in Crysis and the display brightness. If I have the display brightness on the lowest setting the game framerate becomes very playable even with high settings. If I increase the display brightness to high it abruptly drops to 1 FPS or less and the sound starts crackling. I can do it over and over again and see the same results. It's like the laptop doesn't have enough wattage to run everything at once.
-
Is there a correlation with heat? As brightness increases, heat increases too until some threshold is exceeded and then maybe the system downclocks the GPU to compensate? I'm just guessing.
-
check this out to compare with the chassis and the exhaust of the 1640 ! The chassis is completely different!
http://media.photobucket.com/image/xps 1640 exhaust/hjorte/P1000139.jpg -
Maybe, I did watch the CPU temps this time, they didn't go above 65 degrees. Also the change happens quickly. When I raise the brightness the framerate starts getting very irregular (game keeps hesistating), then gets progressively worse and the sound starts crackling after some point. When I lower it instantly becomes smooth.
-
Does not sound good.
-
Okay I unchecked "Enable PowerPlay" in Catalyst settings and now everything is smooth regardless of display brightness. I don't understand why this affects anything since its supposed to be "Maximum performance" when the laptop is on A/C power. And the connection to the brightness setting is so bizarre.

Final Verdict for heat while idle and gaming guys??? Is it going to be a problem in india as the room temps here are always around 95 degree F.....??? What about battery life????
-
disabling powerplay will:
1. reduce your battery life by not downclocking to 2d mode.
2. reduce your laptops 3d performance as it uses a mid level clock instead of 3d clocks.
Test it by running 3dmark06 with and without powerplay and you will see wht i mean. -
I'm getting mine shipped with Windows 7!!!!
...Will be receiving it next week in Canada...I think I'm the first to own this in Canada..or is there anyone else?? Will be doing complete review as soon as it get it on my hands by next thursday
-
Not exactly.
My 1640 has five vent rows, not four as shown here. -
Just a cheap belkin we grabbed at bestbuy. it runs nice actually if you have it sit in the right spot to avoid the vent being blocked. you can still center it on the pad and it doesn't hang off, just cant have it all the way forward.
-
Is this a driver issue then?
Workaround now is to disable powerplay, but a future driver update may fix its performance on AC power? -
So when one disables powerplay, is that increasing or decreasing performance?
I dont quite understand why it would lower your 3d performance by limiting the 3d clock, and increase 2d performance by maxing out the clock on the cpu..... am i reading that wrong? -
Congrats... I'm hoping to be right there with you... I've been waiting forever now (I'm in Ottawa). What was your Order Date and EDD?
I've been speaking to my Dell rep every day for the last week trying to sort this out... I've been getting no love like everyone else.
I will also post thoughts/opinions whenever I receive mine... but I'll bet you get it first.
-
so whats ur Final Verdict for heat while idle and gaming??? Is it going to be a problem in india as the room temps here are always around 95 degree F.....??? What about battery life????
-
Could someone please post a small video of the gaming capabilities please? Games like crysis, GTA4, COD6, or everythings you want. It would be nice!
Thanks! -
Because by disabling powerplay it locks you clocks at 400/800. With powerplay enabled it allows the card to change dynamically to:
3D - 675/800 (performance)
2D - 220/300 (lower clocks to conserver battery) -
Can anyone do a proper review...
-
Has anyone figured out why Dell offers a 15.6" option AND a 16" option (other than RGBLED on the 16" screen)? Does it have something to do with movie formatting?
Thanks. -
Can someone please PM me the temps on this?

so what it sounds like is that there is a driver issue where it isn't detecting a consistant 3D state and its probably jumping down to 2d occasionally.
Is there no way to lock it at 3D performance mode speeds? -
the RGB screen is just manufactured at 16".
-
and I cant believe ATI has NO drivers for this on their website. So much for supporting their products.
-
Mine just shipped today. im in halifax .. not sure but i think 3 days should do it. I would like to see a complete review... anyone?
