If you customize the Studio 17 with an i5 processor, you are forced to go with the 1440 x 900 screen and the Intel integrated graphics. I wanted a higher resolution and dedicated video card for Revit, Photoshop, and some games. My wife has the Studio 17 with the 4500MHD and it is sluggish even with HD video. If you don't need a better video card, though, the Studio 17 is a good option. My wife loves hers. ;)

No significant difference in price, but that's not the point. To me, RGBLED is a HUGE deal and I'm very excited about getting it. Studio 17 does NOT come with RGBLED any more. At least, not in the foreseeable future. I am happy with my choice.

I also don't think that i5 I'll be getting instead of i7 will be a huge difference for what I do.

Dell has pulled the rgbled from the higher end xps 16" configurations also, there has been a lot of reports of shortage of supply of the rgbleds, and those with that screen choice are getting delayed for weeks.

Go to Dell USA and select XPS 16, but only one of the basic configurations. When you do that, you'll see that RGBLED is still available but only on the 16" displays with Core i5. Not with i7 and not with 15.6" displays. It's a little tricky and I didn't figure this out right away, until one of their managers led me through all the steps. Otherwise, it may appear that no XPS with RGBLED is available at all.

There is not a single Studio 17 configuration, however, that is still available with RGBLED. I should find out within the next 7-10 days whether there'll be any delay on my order and will post back. The manager I spoke with promised it will be OK. But I don't trust Dell no more, unless I see a proof - which is the laptop delivered to me as I configured it :)

My brother in law just got his XPS 1647 on Friday. I have to say it is a very sleek machine. Now he only got the 1600x900 resolution, but he has the i5-520m, 4GB DDR3, 320GB 7200 HDD, 9 cell battery, backlit keyboard, etc. I advised him to keep an eye on the Dell site about the possibility of being eligible for a 130W AC adaptor replacement. He probably is not one of the many other users that would be affected by throttling, but I kept him aware just the same. For what it's worth, without the RGBLED he ordered 1/27 and received it 2/5 here in Italy.

I've got a Studio 1558 on order and my sales rep confirmed it is being shipped now, I should have it end of this week or early next week.

    i5-540M | RGB-LED | 6GB RAM | 500GB HDD | HD4670M(duh) | Dell Bluetooth 370 | Intel Wireless 6200 | just the dvd slot | Black (obviously XD) | 9Cell bat

and that combined with 2 year complete warrenty and cover (next day & accident cover), a Sleeve (chocolate with some kind of blue :p) and euhm...
Ah yes, win7 home premium x64 and 15month of mcafee (but I'm going to switch it for symantec corperate edition)

Good luck on getting an RGBLED, though. Apparently those things are as rare as hotcakes.

Netherlands mate... I'm going to be confident! And I really need it within 2 weeks, cuz I'm going to throw that XXODD out of the window ^^

@DW, it wasn't really a choice... they are standard here, as are more things... so basically I haven't had the chance to NOT take BT. And as there are no signs of Dell there will be a delay (for now :p) and choosing other options then the standard ones didn't prospone the delivery date. I have a faint hope that I'll be alright.

And if I do have to wait, It'll be worth it, cuz I'll finally can switch to a decent machine. And from the sound of you and other owners, it's a marvelous piece of equipment ^^.

(bonus is that I can finally laugh at my classmate who has a mac, which is really nice with it's white led screen :p)

But yeah, I'll be patient, I hope

Update in the 1645 throttling thread from Bill at Dell .. looks like we will be getting a BIOS fix at approximately the same time as the 1645's. He said he would pop in here and officialize it as it were later on so keep your eyes peeled for forthcoming good news.

If you can't handle the wait then hop on over there and read the last few pages from today.

Nothing to worry about I think though, for us Europeans ^^

So, the front page original post update has no mention of throttling on 1647, but I guess if I read the whole thread, I'll find that as a complaint, correct?

I did make mention of throttling on 1647 on the conference call with the engineers about 1645 throttling last Thursday night. I was told that there is a BIOS revision in test. We have a tentative ETA for the web post, but I am going to wait before I give that information in case there are any dev problems with this version. Tentative ETA is roughly the same as the web posting for the 1645 BIOS. I can run down some of the more pressing questions for you if you would like to post them here.

My bandwidth is limited, and I really have to get on with my normal duties at some point. So, I will apologize in advance for any lack of timeliness. I will also ask Brad or Todd to step in here if the traffic gets to be more than I can keep up with.

There is no problem with BT, nor has there ever been. I'm mocking someone who was told by the famously-misinformed callcenter Dell reps there was a problem with the BT on his laptop and it would NEVER!!! ship and he had to reorder without BT. Somehow, everyone else who ordered BT managed to avoid that infinite delay. Almost seems like it never existed...strange! ;)
He continues to pretend he's right.
Post hadn't been updated in a while. You are correct. Fixed.

Correct. The same tests and software were used with similar results showing that these ones with the odd unexplained exception (at least as far as I can recall still unexplained) all throttle. That includes all the i5's and i7's. DW has the only one I can think of that doesn't appear to throttle at all.

HP has been shipping the 5830 for the last month in their HP Envy 15 series.

Zero throttling with a Core i7-720QM even when running Prime95 + Furmark.

Dell needs to get with the program and stop shipping last generation GPUs and inadequate 90 watt adapters.

It looks like Dell is going to support the 5470 and 5650. Now they just have to add support for some of ATI's faster mobile GPUs.

    Today's update:

Called customer care, asked for supervisor. Supervisor looked at my case notes and told me that the 6-cell battery was short (that's what they told me yesterday when i called them!)

Next, I asked the supervisor to call the order modification department and have a 3-way teleconference, which he agreed to!

Order Modification department agent - at first tells us that the order has to be canceled because ---** drum rolls **--- the sku for the facial recognition software is invalid !!!............. and I was like - !!!!! Are you serious????? Even the dell supervisor was taken back by this response. We were told that the only way to proceed was cancel and replace this order without the facial recognition software!!!!!!!!! Then, we were put on hold for 'additional confirmation with another team'....for a few mins. All the way, the dell supervisor was with me on the call (which is great). After a few mins of hold, the agent came back and told us that there is no shortage of parts and all looks good with the order and its already expedited!

I then asked if all parts are in stock, why hasn't the order gone to production yet to which the agent did not have any answer. I then demanded to speak to the supervisor at the order modification and the customer care supervisor too agreed and requested for a order modification supervisor.

After waiting for few more minutes, we got the order modification supervisor on line. He had a look at the system and told us that the RGB screens were back ordered and causing the delays, which was totally contradicting what his agent had told us!. It was humiliating for hte dell customer care supervisor (facial recognition to all is good to rgb shortage- all in the same call!!).

Finally i was told that the shipment should arrive mid this week and the status of the order should change to 'production' by friday. All this discussion was documented against my case note (now has a case number). I was told that I would be getting next day shipping for my trouble.

The dell customer care supervisor had a first hand experience of the 'hell' that we all were going through. I wish every dell employee in the corporate goes through this hell.

Having said all this, all that can be done now is wait till Friday and see if the status really changes.

Made a thread of my own but I think I messed up by doing so since this thread exists.

So this is what I'm planning to get to replace my 2006 Mac Book Pro. Returning to Windows because I'm getting back to games, that itself is a personal topic for debate.

    Studio XPS 1647

    Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 540M(2.53GHz,3MB cache)
    6144MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [1x2048 + 1x4096]
    1GB ATI® Radeon™ HD 4670 graphics card
500GB (7,200rpm) Free Fall Sensor Hard Drive
Red Leather back cover : 15.6" (inch) Truelife 720p Full HD+ Display
    90W AC Adaptor

Now my query is that is this system worth the money, i.e. £1500 including a gaming mouse, 2 years collect and return and shipping, or is it better to wait out for the new Mac Book Pro and quench my game urge with the Mac games on offer.

Mainly my doubts are over -

    a) Whether the XPS 1647 is a worthwhile system longterm
    b) Whether Windows 7 is indeed worth the hassle of a Windows system
    c) What the overall comparison would be with the potential new Mac Book Pros.

Newbie so cheers for any help.

Also keeping in mind that Dell seem to take this long to actually make the Laptop, how worthwhile is it as compared to getting Bootcamp and loading Windows XP on the new Macbook Pros?

Well it means DX11, which allows for better more complicated graphics in games. Also these cards are faster, so games will run better. The 5650 will be considerably better than the 4670.

Also these cards use less wattage and run much cooler!

Hi everyone. I just got an Envy 15 and still have about a week and a half to decide on returning it or not. I''m curious about a few things on your Dell XPS 16's with the i7.

    1. How long is the battery life of the 9-cell with the i7 and how much does it weigh? My Envy only lasts 1.5 hours on the 6-cell, and with the optional slice battery it makes the weight around 7 lbs or so. One of the "benefits" of this computer was how thin it is and the weight...not so much anymore.

    2. Does the Dell have the throttling issue while in battery mode? I'f done a search but the thottling issue on the Dell sounds different. I didn't quite understand but it somehow sounded like something with the display causes throttling, even when plugged in?

    3. If anyone who has seen or tried both...any recommendations? My biggest complaint, as I said before is battery time. I want something powerful but also mobile. Not the easiest combination, but for school I'd like a little of both.

    Thanks for sharing this with us. Very informative as it pretty much confirms that;

    a) It's tough to get a straight answer from Dell
    and
    b) RGB screens are still main issue with delays.

Although I can't fully put the blame Dell on this delay issue, I think they need to find another manufacturer/supplier to replace (or help) to keep supplies up to match with demand.

I just hope it’s worth all the wait for mine.

Nope, it still shows "Pre Production" on the account page, "In production" on the order page itself, and when I call the main automated order status line it says "Order Processing", and If I use the older method, where you press "3,2,1,1" it says "Pre Production".

So.. really no idea, going to call tomorrow.

It gave me the same problem. Hang up and try calling it again. But this number will tell you what stage your order is in. Thanks again Josh.

It should work for any order, just follow the 3,2,1,1. It will work.

Hi guys, just received my 1647 with i5 - 540m, WLED 1080p, 4gb RAM and 500GB Sata. Just a quick question, I saw in one of the threads here there was a guide on how to do a fresh install for the studio xps but i could not located it via the 'search function'. Could someone direct me to it? Thanks.

Also, I read the original post on this thread that the 1647 requires an additional driver in order to run 'turbo boost'. Where can I get it? I don't think it is this ---> http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18353&lang=eng

@DW, could you maybe change the first page of the thread? Latest news tells we won't need the bigger adapter, it should have been the algorithmes in the BIOS. Dell will try releasing A04 soon after Chinese NewYear(14th February).

It's not a 100% sure, but when are we ever? :p Bill is doing great!
