But isn't this the case with all glossy screens? I'd go for a matte screen myself but nearly no one makes them any more for laptops. Thank goodness they still have them for stand-alone monitors.

Hi Guys,
I am looking at the XPS 1645 and HP Envy 15.
I was wondering what if any issues are there with the XPS.
Thank you very much. Any help is much appreciated. -
Do a search Redy. It's all in the Dell XPS forums.
-
Well, I have to say. It's everything everybody said it would be.
Just listened to a music sample, the sound is clear, crisp, very very impressive. The screen, well, it's absolutely a competitor for the white led apples, so I'll be having my laugh with some apple friends
But yeah, I'm going to do a clean install in a few minutes, actually I rather not, cuz I'm enjoying the premium feel this beast gives me right now
The e-sata/usb works like a charme, so if you use a bluetooth mouse, plenty of usb-ports. I'll so some testing by tomorrow (after clean install). Simply love it. -
Yeah I was very impressed by the speakers on the 1647 as well...sounds nearly as good as the external speakers I hook up to it.
-
My first test:
540M, 90W, Furmark+Prime95 => Throttling
540M, 90W, Furmark+Prime95+ThrottleStop => No Throttling.
So why are you guys hunting for bios updates and 130W PSU? It works fine with ThrottleStop... -
probably because there are many people who burn themselfs or the carpet with the 90Watt adapter. And the new bios will prevent you from starting and activating throttlestop all the time

PS: I'm a 1645 owner in a 1647 owner's thread....the nerve....lol. We're all equal right? -
Actually, I should have just let it be... XD too late now though, just did a fresh install, but I totally forgot the whole XPS theme and the backgrounds -_-'
I always get too exited... -
One thing I slightly noticed is boot time isn't all that great. I did a clean install yesterday and my 2 year old HP desktop still boots at 55 seconds.
Here is my reboot time, keep in mind I am running off the AC and did install Norton Security suite which is light on resources. The dell dock takes a long time to load.
Can the rest of you guys without the SSD post your reboot timeThanks

dell dock is designed to not take up resources while booting, 'therefor it's being put on the end of the line. and it always will boot last
btw, when I first started the xps, it had an xps win7 theme, that one is gone now, with you aswell? -

I wonder why the non-EPP, you have slot blu-ray as an option, but EPP, no option. -
Check Dell's website (without promotions) and spec a similar configuration and you'll see what they are doing. I just configured an i7 quad core with the all of the other specs being the same and it came out to $1,399. The processor is a little better than the 620m (depending on what you're using) but you're saving yourself $200 by NOT using Dell EPP.

question for 1647 owners, i didnt follow the thread but need info - is it possible to switch to igp while on battery or are you stuck with 4670 all the time?
-
There is no IGP on the 1647. It's always going to use the 4670.
-
Even though on dells site they say the i5 has the hm55 chipset it actually comes with the pm55... I actually called them up and asked them what is with the false advertising and then after 3 days of getting back with the supervisor the best answer they could give me was that the hm55 is not compatible with the i5 which is complete BS
-
I agree it isn't really that great. But it's probably due to the fact that when they want to use the HM55 chipset, they have to redesign the motherboard (I've been told by a friend of mine).
And they covered themselves, with their policy, that any mistake written on the website is 'not their responsibility' and that you can't sue them or force them to be truthful with their statement. -
I wonder why they don't offer i7-620m as an option on the non-EPP page.

Dell-Bill_B, any updates please? -
-
In any case, we're definitely playing a bit of armchair lawyering here though. -
That is correct, not at this time.
I'm running WRT610's (with DD-WRT) and the Dell WLAN 1520 is running very well.. I'm still going to upgrade (and move the 1520 to a netbook) and while I'm at it, I'm going the intel 6300 route (not much of a $ difference in my book). -
Received my 1647 today, 2 days earlier than the updated EDD and 1 day earlier than the original EDD...
One of the first things I looked at was the packing slip and to my surprise, it showed 6GB Mem and a i5-540M (see my Sig for what I ordered).
Wow, Dell gave me a bonus for such a long delay. I went to boot and check the BIOS and did a quick glance at the name on the packing slip... not mine..
Damn it, I just got what I paid for LOL - Oh well, time to give it a run before I do a fresh install. -
-
I went to My Dell Downloads to re-download software for my laptop and I'm a bit confused. Multiple versions of Webcam Central and Facial Recognition are posted there. Which one do I download and install? The version numbers are all over the place...
-
-
-
Apparently, only the wrong packing slip was attached to my box, they "forgot" to put the wrong but upgraded laptop in the my box
I was already regretting not paying the $60 for the i5-540 (I have to admit, I was a little excited until I looked at the name on the packing slip).. I would have been all over that CPU upgrade and the extra 2GB.... -
What have others have put in their WWAN slot? Turbo Memory? HD Decoder? -
-
Does anybody know where can I get the Dell webcam application?
I want it but dont want to install the dock in order to get it.
thanks -

its the broadcom hd decoder that they use in some netbooks. costs around 20-30 on ebay. I had to put it in the Bluetooth slot because the only small screw i had only fit in the Bluetooth screw hole
-
Can somebody tell me how does a TV tuner work?? DO you need to pay a monthly fee for the satellite TV? like cable TV? or do you only get the free local channels? I have no clue about them...thx
-
In that case an HD decoder would be a nice investment indeed! But when you say 3 movies, you mean three actual movies that take up to around 120minutes?
Cuz basically, that would be a great batterylife XD around 7 hours in total. WAUW!
The only real con I found to be present in this laptop is the touchpad, I was hoping it would be a bit more textured (but that's maybe my bad taste). I got used to the very well textured Inspiron of my gf. So in my opinion they could have done this one better.
-
-
I do also have the BT module.
EDIT: Do you mean this? BCM970012NB
If so, I thought that was a Broadcom Legacy chipset -
)
-
I can watch about 320 minutes of hd movies would be a better comparison. @zyc a tv tuner doesn't cost anything extra, all it does is convert a antenna or coxal cable to a picture you can watch on your laptop. it is the same as buying a tv and hooking it up. But the beauty of a tv tuner is that you can record your shows
P.s. the decoders really went up in price. When i bought mine there were like 100's of them on ebay for arround 18+ now theres only 2 dudes selling them for arround 30bucks+ ebay link
